Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Malory's Morte Darthur, Tristan is called Tristram. What does Tristram actually mean?

Answer: Track of tears

Tristan's mother Elizabeth gave birth to him in a forest crying tracks of tears before promptly dying, thus setting up the tragedy in his life from the start.
2. Which modern British county was Tristan supposed to hail from?

Answer: Cornwall

The Cornish name for Cornwall is Kernow, or Cerniw. Most stories have him hailing from Cornwall. There is, however, a slight dispute as to where Tristan actually comes from. There is a Pictish (Scottish borders area) version of the tale, and Tristan's father was King of an area called Liones/Lyonesse, which seems to have been somewhere in the kingdom of Kernow.

It's all a bit confusing.
3. What so-called "sport" is Tristan credited with inventing?

Answer: Hunting

During the medieval times hunting was a popular pastime and it was believed that Tristan invented the rules of hunting. In the Morte Darthur, Tristan shows off his hunting prowess whilst staying at Lancelot's castle Joyous Guard.
4. Why did his uncle King Mark of Cornwall send Tristan to Ireland?

Answer: To bring back the king's new bride Iseult

Tristan was sent in the disguise of a minstrel to bring Iseult from Ireland as a bride for King Mark. It was not a love match, as it was meant to strengthen the ties between the two kingdoms. He had previously fought and defeated the Irish champion Marhaus, which is why he went in disguise.
5. Why did Iseult's mother entrust a love potion to Iseult's nurse Brangien?

Answer: So Iseult and King Mark would fall in love

Iseult's mother naturally wanted her daughter to feel love for her new husband whom she had never seen, thus the love potion. Unfortunately, Tristan and Iseult drank it instead. On the wedding night Brangien pretended to be Isuelt so King Mark would not be suspicious. Brangien ended up marrying Kaherdin, the son of King Hoel of Brittany.
6. Where did Tristan and Iseult take the love potion?

Answer: On the ship coming back from Ireland

To two unfortunate lovers fell in love on the way to Cornwall, before Iseult met King Mark.
7. What happens to Tristan because he cannot be with Iseult after she marries King Mark?

Answer: All of these

Because Tristan and Iseult can no longer be together, a catalogue of disasters happen to Tristan. He marries another Iseult, called Iseult White Hands, but he does not love her and leaves her. He then goes mad, and is banished from Cornwall because of his treachery.
8. What was Passe Brewel?

Answer: Tristan's horse

After Tristan goes mad and is banished, he is found by Brangien. She recognises him though his horse and rescues him.
9. Tristan and Isuelt do get together.

Answer: True

The ill-fated couple run away together and take refuge in Lancelot's castle Joyous Guard.
10. How does Tristan die?

Answer: King Mark kills him

A sad ending to the tale. Even though Tristan and Iseult end up together, King Mark is still angry at them. One night whilst Tristan is serenading Iseult with his harp, a jealous Mark creeps in and stabs Tristan.
