Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these songs from the play is the only song to become popular in main stream culture?

Answer: Day by Day

Some people believe that this song became so popular because it is the most beautiful song in the play. (That is, of course, THEIR opinion.)
2. Which of these songs were in the play, but not the movie?

Answer: Tower of Babble

Interestingly enough, this song was cut out of the movie because the producers were afraid that it would affect the sales of the soundtrack.
3. Who says the first line in the full script of the play?

Answer: Jesus

The first person to play the role of Jesus in Godspell was named Steven, so in some versions of the script, the character of Jesus is written as Steven, instead of Jesus.
4. At the end of the play, what is Jesus hung on ( in most productions)?

Answer: a chain link fence

This is actually done in MOST productions, because that is the way it is written. It is, of course, up to the director to decide how to - for lack of a better phrase - kill Jesus.
5. Is Sophocles in the "Tower of Babble" scene?

Answer: No

I always wondered why Sophocles was not included in the "Tower of Babble" scene. If anybody knows, I would appreciate it if you would mail me that information after you finish the quiz.
6. Who was the first character seen in the play after "Tower of Babble"?

Answer: John the Baptist

7. Godspell is based on the Gospel according to whom?

Answer: St. Matthew

Many things were taken directly out of the Gospel according to St. Matthew: this play, Christmas songs, etc...
8. What is the first spoken line after "Tower of Babble"?

Answer: You viper's brood!

This whole monologue was taken directly from the Gospel according to St. Matthew. It's almost word for word. "You viper's brood! Who warned you to escape from the coming retrobution?..."
9. Finish this quote from "All for the Best": "Some men are born to live at ease, doing what they please..."

Answer: richer than the bees are in honey

I gotta tell you, this is not an easy song to sing, especially while trying to remember your choreography.
10. In the play, one actor plays the part of two biblical characters. Who are they?

Answer: John the Baptist and Judas

A simple costume change and John the Baptist is magically transformed into Judas Iscariot. It's a miracle!?
