Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How about a trip to where a time and place where many dragons once lived? Kushner named 'our' dragon "Nonesuch"--an interesting name for a dragon. Who teaches young Nonesuch the ways of dragons?

Answer: His Grandmother.

This teacher and Nonesuch are related...they're both dragons!
The teacher has a rather short temper; not the case for every dragon, according to Kushner.
Or is that: 'as told to' Kushner?
If so, it was told him by a butterfly, since Kushner says "butterflies know everything" regardless of short life-spans, being an observant and talkative lot who "pass all their knowledge on to others of their kind."
2. Do you know the "first rule" dragons are to follow?

Answer: Guard the treasure.

In "The Book Dragon" a reader learns that dragons aren't always what they seem.
One thing the author points out is that not many dragons challenge a knight to combat, nor do many knights challenge a dragon to the same.
3. Most dragons live for many centuries. Some don't make it that long. Sad question: How does Nonesuch's Grandfather die?

Answer: He swallows a heavy rock; deadly.

"A Book Dragon" tells readers that dragons DO have difficulties.
One of them, for some, is difficulty having "correct judgement on important matters."
Another is that not all dragons treat each other well.
4. What happens to Nonesuch's Grandmother?

Answer: She follows a long tunnel; disappears.

Dragons need a lot of food, according to Kushner.
There is one type of food that can be toxic to dragons: men.
Why? A dragon who eats men incorporates not only their flesh "but their thoughts and inclinations" as well.
Such man-things may not last long for some; for others it may be the death of them.
5. Nonesuch is soon alone at the family cavern. What does he do?

Answer: He is restless but usually stays in the cavern. Oops?

Dragons are, these days, often seen as rather wonderful instead of scary.
Yet Kushner thinks there are a few reasons to fear dragons.
Just one reason given is that "dragons were recorded in almost every ancient culture...rarely pictured as friends of men."
Still, it's true they were (are?) "considered to be good luck by some."
6. Nonesuch decides to do something different; he begins to shrink in size. What place does he then visit when he's alone?

Answer: A special pond; delightful.

It is of interest to learn exactly what dragons DO find to be 'delightful.'
In this book we learn that what some find dragons find delightful, others think is terrible.
For example, some dragons "always prefer to be alone" and others hate the very idea.
7. Next, Nonesuch travels unwittingly because a "wind pushes him along" he is so small. He ends up in a large Abbey, the "Abbey of Oddsfield." What does Nonesuch discover there that changes his life forever?

Answer: Brother Theophilus's gold-tinged Book of Hours.

The wind, after pushing Nonesuch into the Abbey, releases him in a place where he meets a small creature who becomes his friend.
It is a bat. The bat falls asleep often, sometimes beginning to snore in the middle of telling Nonesuch very interesting things.
The bat has been at the Abbey a long time and "knows how things work" there.
8. Nonesuch feels he now has a true reason to live. The reason is stolen and Nonesuch is stolen with it. Nonesuch sleeps often as he tries to think of a way for this stolen item and himself to be safe. Who/What does he see when he DOES safely "leave for a bit and looks into a fire"?

Answer: He sees his grandmother.

Nonesuch continues to shrink.
He sleeps, and travels again without realizing it that this is "more than a dream."
Kushner says it is "a rare thing for a living dragon to shrink or to survive it."
He writes that Nonesuch may be the only one to do so.
The author also tells us Nonesuch "becomes quicker and wiser."
Whether this is just because of his size even Kushner doesn't seem to know.
9. Once Nonesuch awakes again, he is in a land he does not recognize. Still, he sees he is surrounded by books and has the special item he's now loved for a long time. He is also pleased by the people he observes: except for one man. Who is that?

Answer: Mr. Abercrombie, a developer who cheats; bad.

Drunks who may have secrets, developers who may cheat, those who may want photos of dragons, and men who may be angry; they could ALL be bad for Nonesuch.
Kushner tells us that "most men are bad for dragons."
As for dragons...it seems "even small ones know what to do."
10. To protect himself, what he loves and the people he admires, Nonesuch decides to grow big once more. He starts by eating lots of roaches and ends up "eating sheep" until he grows large enough challenge his enemy. What does his enemy say when that man sees the now-large Nonesuch?

Answer: A dragon...ridiculous! I don't believe in you!

In a book less than 200 pages long, Kushner tells readers THE most important thing about dragons, found in those few pages among true history and sure-sounds-true dragon lore:
"A dragon is the reason the universe does not fly apart."
I leave it to you to read the book (again?) to know which dragon this fine author refers to, when, and most importantly, why.
