Helen died during a storm that flooded her house. While the cellar she and her daughter were in filled with water, she made a hole in the wall and sent her two-year-old to a neighbor's house. When a huge wave crashed outside, she heard her daughter scream and she thought that she had died.

When Helen is finally allowed to go to Heaven she learns that her daughter had survived and lived a full age. She when to hell because she thought she was going to.

Dan's passenger seat seat belt in his car and his shirt both smelled like gardenias. Helen also thought she smelled gardenias when Dan came home from a late night at "work". At the end of the book, Helen tells her mother's woman's group that someone is committing adultery. Then the next day, during therapy, she finds out who was having the affair with him. In the end Dan left Cathy.

Mitch is Billy's older brother. He has tattoos and works as a mechanic. He takes care of Billy because their mother is in the hospital and their father is in prison. He also likes to party.

James died later than Helen. He was in a tree as a lookout. At the top of the tree was what James thought was a bird's nest, but when he climbed up he found out it was a baby's hat with a bullet hole in it. He then noticed the enemy approaching and made his way down the tree to warn the others, but he was too late. James and all his comrades died.
