Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Gordianus' slave woman, Betheseda, is from what country?

Answer: Egypt

After his murder mystery, Gordianus buys her freedom and marries her.
2. What is wrong with Gordianus' son, Eco?

Answer: He's mute

Because of a childhood illness, Eco was left mute for several years. He regains his voice again at the end of the book.
3. What Roman consul commissioned Gordianus to the murder case?

Answer: Crassus

He figured Gordianus could figure out the case in about a week.
4. The supposed assassins of the consul's overseer (for his estate), Lucius Licinius, were whom?

Answer: Zeno and Alexandros

Both slaves were innocent, and Alexandros actually saw the murder take place. It was assumed that they killed Lucius Licinius and joined Spartacus' slave rebellion.
5. How much time did Gordianus have to solve the case?

Answer: 5 days

Since Crassus is convinced that the two slaves, Zeno and Alexandros, killed his overseer, he vows to honor an ancient law which requires him to kill all 99 of his slaves when a slave commits murder. So basically, Gordianus is pressed for time.
6. What experience caused Gordianus to think that slavery was immoral?

Answer: He actually saw slaves rowing the ship he sailed on

While riding the ship to Baiae to solve his murder mystery, Gordianus sneaks downstairs at the bottom of the ship and witnesses slaves rowing the ship and being abused at the hands of a master who watched them. It changed his outlook on slavery forever.
7. What did Apollonius find at the bottom of the sea?

Answer: Swords and silver coins

The swords and silver coins were important clues to finding Lucius Licinius' murderer.
8. What was the fate of Olympias' lover, Alexandros?

Answer: He died while rowing a ship

He was sold into slavery into silver mines, then taken to a ship where he was forced to row continually. The ship sank, with only those on deck surviving. All the slaves onboard, including Alexandros, died.
9. What was the consul's way of killing off his slaves?

Answer: Giving them toy weapons and forcing them to fight Roman soldiers

Gordianus was able to stop the killing just in time to reveal the murderer of Licinius.
10. Who was Licinius' murderer?

Answer: Faustus Fabius

Sometime later, Crassus had him beaten to death in front of several Roman soldiers and the general he served under.
