Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the first book of the series, simply called "Odd Thomas", Odd revealed he was in love with Stormy Llewellyn. What did he admit was her real first name?

Answer: Bronwen

She liked Stormy better because she felt it sounded less like the name of an Elf than Bronwen. Odd admitted that his real first name was Odd. He explained that he and Stormy were soul mates destined to be together because of two things. One was that a fortune teller's card had said they'd be together forever and the second reason was that they had matching birthmarks.

He later found out that her birthmark was actually a tattoo.
2. In book one we met Odd's good friend and writer Little Ozzie Boone. Ozzie had a big orange cat named what?

Answer: Terrible Chester

Odd went to visit Little Ozzie in book one after he'd had the crazy time shifting encounter at Fungus Man's house. Ozzie had also experienced some trauma that day by way of someone detonating a bomb at his house. The bomb had destroyed his beloved plastic cow, which Ozzie had preserved for years as a piece of lawn art. While at Ozzie's, Terrible Chester had expressed hostility at the presence of Fungus Man (Robert 'Bob' Robertson) outside. This led Odd to try and chase the weird man down. Odd had also discovered earlier in the day that Bob Robertson had an extensive collection of research on serial killers. He had posters of Charles Manson, Mohammed Atta and Timothy McVeigh inside his house.

A bodach is one of the creatures that Odd will see when an impending large tragedy is imminent. Krevlornswath, also known as Lorne or The Host, appeared for four seasons on "Angel" and was played by Andy Hallett.
3. Which terrible loss did Odd suffer at the end of book one, "Odd Thomas"?

Answer: Stormy died

Dead Elvis also appeared in Charlaine Harris' "Southern Vampire" series. He was a vampire in those books, but a ghost in Odd's world. Ghosts did not speak in Odd's world, but they could communicate with him in other ways. He had been able to help some of them cross over into the next realm. In book one, Elvis did not cross over, but remained with Odd after Stormy's death.

Stormy died in both the book and the film. She was played by actress Addison Timlin, who also appeared on the TV series "Californation" and "Zero Hour". The fabulous Anton Yelchin played Odd. He was also in the films "Terminator Salvation" and the remake of "Fright Night".
4. We learned many things in the first book of the series. Which desert town did Odd reside within in books one and two?

Answer: Pico Mundo, California

Odd had lived in Pico Mundo all of his life and had no real plans to ever leave, in book one. Pico Mundo was located inside the Mojave Desert and Dean Koontz described the relentless brutal heat with vivid detail. The film version of "Odd Thomas" was filmed in part in New Mexico but not inside the town of Las Vegas.

At the end of book two, Odd decided to leave Pico Mundo.
5. By the end of book one, Odd had surmised that he may have inherited his ability to see dead people from which family member?

Answer: His aunt, Cymry

In book one, Odd established that none of his family members had known of his gift. His mom had her own special kind of mental issues, described to sound somewhat like borderline personality disorder. She had been emotionally unavailable to him throughout his life, and had threatened to kill herself in front of him many times. His father was a narcissist who refused to act his age, and that left the mysterious sister of his mom, Aunt Cymry. He'd never met her, and reports of her location were vague and inconsistent, but by the end of the book he concluded that she could possibly be locked away somewhere having the same "gift" as he'd been given.

The film described his mom as being locked up by the time he was seven years old and no mention of Cymry. Carl, Shane and Daryl are all characters from the TV show "The Walking Dead".
6. In book two, "Forever Odd", we found out that Odd had a long time friend named Danny Jessup. Danny suffered from which debilitating congenital disorder?

Answer: Osteogenesis Imperfecta - brittle bone disease

Odd had known Danny since childhood, and in "Forever Odd" had to try and find Danny before he was seriously hurt. Danny's recently departed step-father came to Odd after being murdered in his home. Odd and the Chief had to look for Danny because his life hung in a precarious balance.

The prime suspect was Danny's biological father Simon, who'd recently been released from a long prison term for manslaughter.
7. In "Forever Odd", Odd used his psychic magnetism to find his missing friend Danny. Where did it lead Odd, and who had taken Danny?

Answer: Panamint Resort and Casino - a woman named Datura

In the time after Stormy's death, Odd had fallen into seclusion. Where he'd previously been there for Danny, he was unable to support his long time friend after Stormy died. Danny's own mom had died of cancer, and his step-father had not been enough emotional support. So, Danny turned to phone sex lines for companionship.

This was how he met Datura. She was a deeply disturbed woman, but also powerfully commanding. She found out about Odd's abilities from Danny and used that psychic pull to lead him to a resort/casino burned out five years earlier in the aftermath of earthquakes.

She wanted Odd's ti bon ange for herself. That term, 'ti bon ange', means "little good angel". It is described as "the essence of a person, the portrait of the individual, the sum of their life's choices, actions and beliefs".

She believed in dark magic and that Odd was a witch doctor. The name Datura refers to a poisonous plant, sometimes called angel's trumpets, and sharing that name with the Brugmansia. Early in the book, the Brugmansia tree, or Tree of Death, played a part in the story. Datura, over confident and fully insane, met her maker at the hands of a mountain lion prowling the casino area for food.
8. In book three, "Brother Odd", the story took place on the grounds of a monastery.

Answer: True

At the end of book two, Odd told his pal, Chief Porter, that he was going to spend time as a lay person in a monastic order. It turned out to more than a need for quiet solace, as it was also that good ole psychic magnetism at work once more. When book three began, Odd had been at St. Bartholomew's Abbey for seven months.
9. Who was the cause of the not so supernatural phenomena in "Brother Odd", and sadly had to be killed to make it stop?

Answer: Brother John

Brother John had been Dr. John Heineman before turning to the order. He was a genius scientist who'd made billions of dollars in his career. His son Jacob had been born significantly deformed 25 years earlier and he abhorred disorder of any kind. He left his fiancee Jennifer after Jacob was born.

He saw Jacob in the hospital when the boy was seven years old and urged Jennifer to let his infection kill him. Six years later, Jennifer died of cancer and Jacob went to live in a church home. Feeling the burden of his guilt, John gave a huge portion of his money over for the continued care of St. Bartholomew's, had Jacob transferred there, and became a monk himself.

He continued to search for God in a scientific manner, somewhat secretly, in a special lair at the monastery known as John's Mew.

In his experiments, Brother John "proved" that the ultimate reality was thought. Thoughts made reality. He demonstrated his ability to "create life" by simply imagining it. It turned out that his inner tortured child was also creating monstrous machine-like creatures made of what appeared to be bones. That and another manifestation, which Odd thought of as Death, were killers.

They were soulless beings, or "anti-life", as NSA agent Rodian Romanovich described. In the end, he was forced to shoot and kill Brother John to save the occupants of the monastery.
10. Which of the following events did not occur in "Brother Odd"?

Answer: Odd died and talked to Stormy

Stormy did communicate with Odd in the book, via the use of two previously deceased girls, but Odd did not die. He believed he had died in book two, "Forever Odd", and then visited his Earth bound friends to say goodbye. But, he could not be sure of that as he awoke at the of that story, alive after all.

After the complex trip into his first snowstorm, quantum theory, chaos, order and the power of not so positive thinking, Odd did decide to leave St. Bartholomew's. Ozzie came to take him home, but on the journey Odd's psychic magnetism forced him to exit the car and detour off on a new adventure. After he said goodbye to Ozzie, he, Boo and Elvis began walking. He told Elvis it was time for him to cross over, Elvis nodded in agreement and disappeared to the other side to finally meet his mama. Boo, Odd's first ghost dog, stayed with him. And, a short while later, the pair was joined by a new ghostly friend- Frank Sinatra.
