Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The Moonstone Castle Mystery" is part of what children's mystery series?

Answer: Nancy Drew

The "Nancy Drew" series began in 1930; it was and is written by a team of writers collectively known as Carolyn Keene. "The Moonstone Castle Mystery" was published in 1963 and involves the mysterious gift of a moonstone, a missing girl, and the supposedly-haunted Moonstone Castle.
2. "The Man in the High Castle" is an alternate history novel based on what premise?

Answer: The Axis won WWII

In Philip Dick's novel, Germany and Japan defeat the Allies after the assassination of F.D. Roosevelt and split the United States, ruling over them. In an odd twist, there's a book within the book that postulates what would have happened if the Allies had beaten the Axis (and it does not align with what really happened). The book has been adapted into an Amazon-based web series.
3. The memoir "The Glass Castle" was written by which author?

Answer: Jeannette Walls

This memoir recounts the author's life as she grew up in poverty. It was adapted to film in 2017. The title refers to the house her father wanted to build but never did.
4. What genre is Horace Walpole's "The Castle of Otranto"?

Answer: Horror

It is also considered the first gothic novel. It takes place in and near the castle of a very messed-up family led by Manfred, who tries to marry his son's fiance after his son randomly dies on his wedding day. Melodrama follows, with arranged marriages and discoveries of kinship previously unknown.
5. "Castle of Wizardry" is part of what fantasy series by David Eddings?

Answer: The Belgariad

This five-book series begins with "Pawn of Prophecy" and ends with "Enchanters' End Game". It revolves around a cast of characters attempting to protect or steal the sacred Orb. "Castle of Wizardry is the fourth book. The series is followed by "The Malloreon", another five-book series.
6. Constance and Merricat are characters in which gothic novel?

Answer: We Have Always Lived in the Castle

Shirley Jackson's book is told from the point-of-view of Merricat, who lives with her sister Constance and their Uncle Julian in an isolated mansion. Years earlier, most of the family were killed after eating sugar laced with poison, and a mystery lingers over who did it. Merricat is a strange girl who enacts many bizarre rituals to keep herself and her family safe; when a cousin appears, she wants to chase him away.
7. Who are the protagonists of "The Castle of Llyr", the third book of the "Prydain Chronicles"? (Hint: the second in the series is called "The Black Cauldron")

Answer: Taran and Eilonwy

Lloyd Alexander's five-book series is based on Welsh mythology. It follows Taran's journey of self-discovery as he transitions from assistant pigkeeper to something much grander. In "The Castle of Llyr", Taran must rescue his friend Eilonwy from the castle after realizing that she is perhaps not as safe there as he thought. He is right: she has been kidnapped and enchanted.

The animated Disney film "The Black Cauldron" was adapted from the first two books in the series, the first of which is called "The Book of Three".
8. Which of these "Castle" books isn't a fantasy?

Answer: The Women in the Castle

"The Women in the Castle" by Jessica Shattuck is historical fiction set in Germany before, during, and after WWII. The novel follows three women, each married to a man involved in an assassination attempt on Hitler, as they come to terms with what they experienced during the war.
9. "I Capture the Castle" follows a girl, Cassandra, who wants to be which of these? (Perhaps she would like being a Funtrivia member.)

Answer: Writer

Dodie Smith's first novel is one of my favorite books. Cassandra lives with her family in a worn-down castle in the English countryside. Her father wrote a highly-praised book years ago, but has had writer's block ever since. Cassandra writes of her life in journals, honing her skills, as she grows out of childhood, a change inspired by the arrival of two Americans, one of whom she falls in love with.

Smith was offered money to change the ending for the U.S. release but declined.
10. "The Castle" is a German-language novel by which author, who had a penchant for the bizarre?

Answer: Franz Kafka

The novel was never finished due to the death of the author. Kafka left instructions to destroy all his unfinished works upon his death; instead, his editor published them. (Emily Dickinson left the same instructions for her unpublished works, but they were likewise ignored.) The main character, K. (yes, his name is a letter followed by a period/full stop), attempts to get into a castle around a village and speak to the man in charge, but never succeeds.

The book ends in the middle of a sentence.
