Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Okay, I'm not going to make this easy! He had been 35 years old and worth $4 million when she married him, when they divorced he was 42 years old and worth more than $30 million. Unfortunately for this control freak he got hit by a garbage truck at forty miles per hour and died....or did he? Could it be him stalking her now? Surely not.... Which Koontz novel am I?

Answer: Shadow Fires

Originally published under the pseudonymn Leigh Nichols, this is a fantastic tale of love and drama and fear and government conspiracy all thrown in the blender, and what comes out is a roller coaster of a good book. If you haven't read it, I highly recommend it; it's a good read, not a lot of down time between action sequences and the bad guy gets hit by a truck in the first ten pages!
2. It's 1963 now, I'm seventeen years old. I hang out in Gibtown during the winter, where if you're a trusted member of the community you can get just about anything you want, which I would need for my visit to Yontsdown, a very hairy place. White sky. Dark lightning. Which Koontz novel am I?

Answer: Twilight Eyes

What a great book. "Twilight Eyes" is the tale of a gifted carnie who can see goblins inside human form. The goblins' plan for us humans is a scary one and old Slim has got to help us out, he's the only one who can see them. Incredibly well written, you forget you're an adult reading about goblins and ghouls (which you KNOW don't exist )and you are all of a sudden ten years old and scared of what's coming at you. White sky and dark lighting was the insignia for the Lighting Coal Company in Yontsdown.
3. Detonation in forty minutes. We're in an underwater war with a psychopath. High explosives abound. After reading this one you might develop a case of cryophobia. Detonation in twenty-three minutes. Which Koontz novel am I?

Answer: Icebound

"Icebound" was a great read. Anyone interested in Tom Clancy mixed with Steven King, this is it. If you know someone who isn't into horror fiction but they like political drama, turn them on to Dean Koontz. He does a lot of government conspiracy theories mixed with just the right amount of macabre. My personal favorite is the series featuring Christopher Snow, ("Fear Nothing", "Seize the Night") just the right amount of conspiracy created by humans, and enough supernatural to make the fantasy. He's just a great author. (P.S. Cryophobia is a fear of ice!)
4. "We need our monsters to be scary. They don't do us any good if they don't frighten us." "Sometimes we need to be frightened." My best friend told me this after I'd had a terrible nightmare. Or was it a nightmare at all? Could it be a repressed memory of some sort? Which Koontz novel am I?

Answer: The Key to Midnight

Another good one. A senator's daughter goes missing and turns up singing in a nightclub in Japan, but what really happened to her? Are the memories she has her own, or were they put there? Remember what I said about conspiracy books? Well this one has got it all!
5. There has been a prophecy made that a boy should be the undoing of a ruthless killer. A killer who is tracking down this threat single-mindedly. No, it's not "Harry Potter", it's just a good tale of mystery and interconnectedness of every single person in the world. My mom's name is Agnes, but most people call her the "Pie Lady". Which Koontz novel am I?

Answer: From the Corner of His Eye

What a great book about a great kid, a fantastic Mom and how we are all connected even though we might not even realize it. There's a lot of comedy, a lot of heartbreak; I have to tell you, the chapter when Agnes and Joey are in the car accident, I was in tears at their exchange.

This chapter is among one of the first chapters in the book; that tells you how quickly you can identify with and attach yourselves to these characters.
6. "This is ridiculous, why would I pitch those dogs around just when I was about to see the killer's face?" "You really didn't want to see his face, so your subconscious threw those figurines to distract you." Wicka-wicka-wicka. What is that noise, it haunts me in my sleep, if I could just remember? Which Koontz novel am I?

Answer: The Vision

Okay, so this was one of my favorites when I first started reading Koontz, and I must have read it literally a hundred times. It's a very good story of a clairvoyant who helps detectives with murderers and so on, but this case is hairy as something always prevents her from seeing this particular killer.

It's a really great book, a quick read, it's not a very long story, and worth it when you get to the end of this "who-dun-it" type of novel. Originally published in 1977!
7. I have a blond haired suitor of sorts, and he always shows up at the best times to save me from some mess or another that I've gotten myself into. As a girl I learned to endure, then learned to fight. Now I know I don't have to be angry all the time if I just accept my fate. Which Koontz novel am I?

Answer: Lightning

This book was okay, I've read it, more than once, but out of all that Dean Koontz has offered I have to be honest and say it's not one of my favorites, but still a good book. A little who-dun-it, mixed with supernatural (or is it), and sprinkle some love story and conspiracy and you've got a good book. Worth a read (or a few in my case).
8. I don't have a lot of time, I'm a product of young America, always on the go. My mother hates it and always tries to get me to slow down and listen. Maybe when things start getting hairy I'll call Mom up and see if she can help me out, I mean when the boogey man turns out to be real, who else would you call? Which Koontz novel am I?

Answer: Tick Tock

Great, great, great story. Koontz went out of his norm with this one and it turned out fabulous. A story about Tommy Phan who is American through and through, but his family is Vietnemese, and his mother is great. He also meets a crazy chick who turns out to be amazing, and those old fairy tales about monsters and goblins and urban legends, well this story will make you rethink those legends and wonder if some of them might be real after all.

It gets a ten on the creepy scale! "The deadline is dawn."
9. "A machine without productive function is without meaning. It can not serve even as a prison." What is the point of that hulking eyesore if it serves no purpose? I think I've just had an insight, but I can't quite grasp it. Maybe I should think about some TS Elliot lines, or go talk to my fiance? She doesn't have too much to say, but when she does, I write it down. Which Koontz novel am I?

Answer: Velocity

Another classic. This is a newer book, released in 2005, and I read it all in one sitting because I just didn't want to put it down. It's that good. In the opening chapters there's a hilarious exchange in a bar, followed by an ominous note on the barkeep's windshield.

This book is a classic who-dun-it, nail-biter all the way, and when you think you're sure what's going on, it flips all around and leaves you breathless.
10. The Moonhawk Project is out of control. "What I don't understand is why the regressives have all chosen a sub-human condition. Surely you have the power within you to undergo evolution rather than devolution, to lift yourself up from mere humanity to something higher, cleaner, purer." Tessa and Chrissie might not make it through this thriller. Which Koontz novel am I?

Answer: Midnight

Okay so admittedly I haven't read this one in a while, a long while. But it was a good book nonetheless and I like the devolution parts. If you do read this one and enjoy it, then you've just got to read the "Fear Nothing" books. This book is one that includes a faithful canine companion; a lot of his newer books are dog oriented, including one which is all about golden retrievers. (He seems to be quite fond of his dog, Trixie). I hope you enjoyed my quiz, I hope it challenged you, and more importantly I hope it inspired you to read a book!
