Ender's Game Multiple Choice Quiz | 25 Questions

I chose to create a quiz based on "Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card. It is a fantastic sci-fi story that I simply couldn't put down. The quiz itself loosely follows the story in chronological order. I hope you enjoy it.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Ender's real name?

Answer: Andrew Wiggin

Ender is just his nick-name, that his sister referred to him as when she was an infant. The name stuck. I think it's because he has a habit of 'ending' games, by winning. He is referred to as Ender for virtually the whole story.
2. What was it about Ender that alienated him from his peers at the start of the story?

Answer: He was the third child born in his family, and due to government restrictions this was highly unusual

Whilst he was also extremely intelligent, it was being a "Thirdie" that caused him the most trouble.
3. What was wrong with Ender's brother and sister that prevented them from gaining entrance to the school?

Answer: His brother was too aggressive and his sister was too passive

His brother Peter was threatening to kill Ender at the start of the story, and had many problems with his severe aggression. He was too dangerous to consider for enrollment. His sister Valentine lacked the aggressiveness to be a military leader and thus did not meet the requirements of the school, which was intended to train a military mastermind to save the human race from the Formics, alien invaders.
4. What was the surname (his first name is not revealed) of the boy that Ender killed at the start of the story?

Answer: Stilson

Ender killed him by mistake, in a conflict that began as a result of the bullying.
5. What was the name of the colonel who took Ender to the school?

Answer: Colonel Hyrum Graff

Colonel Graff is a significant character in the story; he is in charge of the school. He constantly challenges Ender with various mind games, and analyses his reactions to them thoughtfully.
6. What happened on the shuttle that created problems for Ender later on?

Answer: He was singled out by the colonel, and the others boys were jealous

Graff pointed out that Ender's intelligence dwarfed theirs, and they became jealous. This led to a conflict, in which Ender broke another boy's arm. He also had few friends at first aboard the station.
7. What did Ender soon discover to be the focus of the Battle School?

Answer: The null-G battles

These battles were the criteria for assessment of the boys by the teachers; their combat skills, abilities to employ various tactics, physical wellbeing, and much more, were carefully reviewed based upon their performance in the Battle Room.
8. Ender formed a friendship on his first experience in the battleroom that bridged the gap between himself and the bully from the shuttle, Bernard, securing his position amongst the "launchies". What was his new friend's name?

Answer: Alai

Alai became a close friend of Ender's, and a significant part of the early story.
9. What tactic did Ender find effective during battles that won him top position in the charts for the entire school?

Answer: Approaching the opposition feet first (after freezing his feet) to minimise the chance of being shot

This tactic was ridiculed by the others at first, but later appreciated for its tactical advantages. Later in the story, as Ender gains influence, his strategies are feebly mimicked by the others.
10. Ender utilised the school messenger system to end his isolation. How?

Answer: He established a fake ID and used it to attack bullies, thus reducing their power

Using this tool, Ender makes friends with Shen, and balances the power distribution amongst his companion group of "launchies" by attracting negative attention to the bullies leading them.
11. What is the title of chapter six, in which Ender advances to a previously unreached point in the school psychological examination game on his computer?

Answer: The Giant's Drink

The psychological examination game is an interactive game given to the boys on the computers assigned to them. It allows the officers to gain a deep psychological profile of the students through studying their decisions for gameplay. Throughout the story, references are made to the significance of Ender's actions in the game, especially towards the end.
12. What was the name of the first 'army' that Ender was assigned to?

Answer: Salamander

Salamander army was strict and organised, and was led by Bonzo Madrid, who is quite significant later in the story.
13. Who did Ender first meet in the army, who agreed to help to train Ender?

Answer: Petra Arkanian

Petra was Ender's friend and trainer in this part of the story, and was also amongst the few who accompanied him to Combat school at the end of the story.
14. Because of Ender's age, Bonzo treated him as inferior and ordered him not to compete in the battles. However, in the fourth battle, against Leopard army, Ender saved his army by taking out the remaining opposition before they could win the battle, in defiance of Bonzo's orders. This began Bonzo's hatred of Ender. Eventually, this led to a conflict. What happened?

Answer: Ender accidentally killed Bonzo in self defense

This was a main point in the story. Bonzo and his gang had been threatening Ender for some time, and Bean and the dragon army had tried to protect him. Even Graff had grown concerned. Yet still the conflict occurred. Ender, who had been training in self defense for some time, knew how to fight against the agressor, but it was an intense battle.

He killed him in the end. Like Stilson, it was a mistake, but still a cause for much debate between Graff and the other officers. Please note I've gone a bit ahead of myself here.

This occurred more towards the end of the story, but the events mentioned in the first part of the question occurred at about this stage.
15. What army was Ender traded to?

Answer: Rat

Rat army had a completely different style to Salamander army. It was far less organised and strict, and functioned differently in the Battle Room, in that it split into its toon divisions far more.
16. The commander of this army, "Rose the Nose", placed Ender under the command of toon leader Dink Meeker. What was unusual about this boy?

Answer: He led his toon independently of Rose, and refused promotion as he thought that the teachers were the enemies, not the students

Dink was one of the few from the school who came with Ender to Combat School. The others included Petra, Bean, and Crazy Tom.
17. What new paradigm did Ender adopt that greatly assisted him in the null-G environment?

Answer: He considered the enemy gate to be down

This concept helped Ender to formulate more effective battle plans. The other students had a stuborn refusal to adopt the tactic until he showed them how useful it was as toon leader.
18. What army was Ender given command of?

Answer: Dragon

The Dragon army consisted of rejects and unlikely heroes from other armies. It was only Ender and possibly Bean who saw that as a team they had great potential. He brought the team to top ranking, and kept them there despite the rules being changed to their disadvantage by Graff.
19. What was the name of the small child who helped Ender with his command by coming up with new solutions to tactic problems as the colonel bent the rules to make the game become progressively harder for Ender's army?

Answer: Bean

Bean was Ender's right-hand man. He was even given leadership of a special squad within the army.
20. What was special about the small child who helped Ender with his command? (You may have had to read "Ender's Shadow" to get this question.)

Answer: He was genetically altered to the point where he could be considered a different species

Bean was the only boy in the school, and quite possibly the only person in the whole world, more intelligent than Ender. In fact, Mr Card wrote another book, "Ender's Shadow", which follows the story of Bean.
21. Ender left the school and went to Command School, where he met Mazer Rackham. Mazer taught him during his time there. What was special about him?

Answer: He was responsible for winning the last battle against the Formics

Mazer taught Ender what he had learnt of the Formics in his encounter. He reveals that the secret to defeating them lies in destroying the queen.
22. Back on Earth, Ender's siblings had virtually taken over the planet through internet politics under false names. What names were these?

Answer: Demosthenes and Locke

Peter was Locke, and as Locke he became the world leader, under Ender's guidance. Valentine was Demosthenes, but she went with Ender to a new colony instead of taking a position of power on Earth, despite having higher popularity.
23. Ender was tricked into fighting the final battles against the Formics without even knowing about it. He won. He destroyed the Formic home world with a device nicknamed "Dr Device". Why was it given this name?

Answer: It was a pun

It worked by destroying molecular bonds in a chain reaction leaving only trace elements, thus it was called the Molecular Detachment Device, or M.D. Device. As M.D. also stands for Medical Doctor, the device was called "Dr Device" as a joke.
24. Ender was able to communicate instantaneously with the ships sent to the Formic home world despite the fact that they were dozens of light years away. He could do this because of the use of a device taken from the Formics. What was it called?

Answer: The Ansible

It is also called The Philotic Parallax Instantaneous Communicator, but its common name, and what it is referred to most often in the story, is the ansible.
25. What happened on Earth just after Ender won the battle?

Answer: A world war broke out as the uneasy global alliance formed against the Formics broke down

Something else happened after this, but I've run out of room, sadly. Still, at least if you haven't read the book yet, it'll leave a surprise for you. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Ender's Game, and I'm sure you would too.
