Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As we enter the second half of the story "Rage", Decker tells the class about a birthday party he attended at age 13. Why was he horrified about attending?

Answer: His mother forced him to wear a courdoroy suit.

His mother insisted that he wear his Sunday's best to Carol's birthday party. Everyone else dressed casually. The party ended badly for Decker, who ended up getting beaten up by a bigger kid.
2. A police sniper fires through the windows of Room 16 and hits Decker in the chest. What stops the bullet from entering his body?

Answer: "Titus"

In the beginning of the book, Charlie Decker sets fire to the contents of his locker, tossing the combination lock he has named "Titus" into the garbage can. As an afterthought, he picks it up and stuffs it in his breast pocket. The novel would be much shorter if this hadn't have happened, although one could argue this scenario is a little too cliche.

The bullet hit the lock, but did not pierce his skin.
3. Much of this story is dialog and confessionals by the "hostages" that Decker holds in that classroom. One of the first confessions made is by "Pig Pen", who discusses the strained relationship between him and whom else?

Answer: His mother

"Pig Pen" is disgusted with his mother and the way she treats him. He confesses to the class that he wishes he had the guts that Charlie has, because he would happily kill her.
4. According to the story by Sandra Cross, to whom did she lose her virginity?

Answer: Ted

She explains the story of how Ted had taken her into the back of his car and failed to use contraception as he had promised. Listening to this horrified poor Ted Jones. However, what upset Ted the most was Sandra's description of getting picked up by a stranger and having a fantastic experience (for her at least) not long afterwards.
5. What is the first name of Decker's longtime best friend, mentioned often but never properly introduced in the story?

Answer: Joe

Joe McKennedy is mentioned throughout the book, although we never officially meet him. It is with Joe and his brother Pete who Charlie goes to a college party with and has his first good opportunity for losing his virginity.
6. Decker tells the story of how he nearly killed Mr. Carlson, his chemistry teacher, after the latter taunted him in front of the class for not being able to work a problem out on the blackboard. What weapon did Decker use?

Answer: A pipe wrench

Carlson survived and over his wife's objections, decided not to press charges. This led to a long suspension for Charlie, and a none-too-pretty confrontation with his father.
7. What "hostage" is given leave to go to the restroom and, remarkably, returns to the classroom instead of making an escape?

Answer: Irma Bates

Besides Ted Jones, Irma Bates was the most averse to "getting it on", Decker's words for the day's events. However, it was clear that as the day progressed she learned a lot about herself and about other people, and she was not about to miss out on what happened next.
8. Who is the Captain of the Maine State Police who arrives in the classroom to find Decker and Ted Jones alone after the other 23 hostages have left?

Answer: Frank Philbrick

Philbrick comes down to see Decker trying to revive Ted, who has suffered mind-numbing abuse from his fellow "hostages". Decker feigns reaching for something hidden (the gun is unloaded and in Mrs. Underwood's desk), and Philbrick shoots him three times.
9. What is the condition of Ted Jones at the end of the story?

Answer: Catatonic

He is in a mental institution while the doctors ponder over what course to take to treat his catatonic state. Reluctant to use electro-shock therapy, one doctor suggests trying hallucinagenic drugs first.
10. Where do we find Decker as the story comes to a close?

Answer: In a mental institution

Decker is in a mental institution until he is fit to answer for his two murder convictions. As of the end of the story, Decker is pleased that he has a secret again. It makes him feel human. The secret is that despite eating the custard served to him, he secretly hates it.
