Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "The Negotiator" trilogy by C.E. Murphy, lawyer Margrit Knight discovers a handsome stranger, leaning over the body of a young woman. He turns out to be a real live Gargoyle who is being framed for murder. What is his name?

Answer: Alban

Alban is a 'proper' stone gargoyle in the daylight, but by night he transforms into a very handsome man. Magrit finds herself believing in his innocence and agreeing to help him prove it, but also thinks she is going mad as there "are no such thing as living gargoyles". Then she falls in love with him...
The first book in the series is called "Heart of Stone" and was first published in 2007.
Bis is the juvenile gargoyle who lives in the church belfry in Kim Harrison's "Rachel Morgan" series, the first of which, "Dead Witch Walking", was published in 2004.
2. To save everyone there, Aren of Fallbrook must negotiate protection with a mysterious creature who lives in the mountains above her village. In a plotline reminiscent of "Beauty and the Beast", Aren and the creature fall in love. Which book by Patricia Briggs is this?

Answer: The Hob's Bargain

The Hob is akin to the Beast from the traditional fairy tale, with Aren as Belle. "The Hob's Bargain" was first published in 2001.
"Iron Kissed" is volume three of the "Mercy Thompson" series, and was published in 2008. "Hunting Ground" is the second volume of the "Alpha and Omega" series, and was first published in 2009, and "Raven's Shadow" was first published in 2004. All these books are by Patricia Briggs.
3. In "Valiant" by Holly Black, Valerie is a runaway teenager who is befriended by Lolli, Luis, and Dave. They invite her to live with them in their hideaway in the subway tunnels. She slowly comes to realise that all is not as it seems, especially once she meets Ravus, the drug dealing troll who lives under the bridge, and they fall in love. What name is given to the drug Ravus peddles to the faeries?

Answer: Nevermore

Valerie first runs away from home because she finds out that her boyfriend is cheating on her. After falling in with Lolli and the boys, she begins to notice little oddities, which lead to her becoming embroiled in a feud between factions of faeries. Ravus is being framed for murder, and it takes all Val's ingenuity and a lot of luck to let her save his life.
"Valiant" was first published in 2005, and is a companion volume to "Tithe" and "Ironside", published in 2002 and 2007 respectively.
4. Riley Jenson and her twin Rhoan are unique in their heritage in the world created by author Keri Arthur. What are they?

Answer: Dhampires

Riley and Rhoan are dhampires. Their mother was a werewolf, and their father was a vampire. The circumstances surrounding their conception were a very rare occurrence, and are highly unlikely to ever happen again. As well as the ability to shapeshift into a seagull of all things, Riley has characteristics of both vampires and werewolves and winds up with both a werewolf soulmate and a vampire one.
The first book in the "Riley Jenson, Guardian" series is "Full Moon Rising", and was first published in 2006.
5. Rachel Morgan's life can only be described as complicated. When she first meets her lover Nick, he is incognito and disguised as a rat. What is Rachel disguised as at the time, via a shapeshifting charm?

Answer: Mink

Rachel transforms herself into a mink so that she can break into the office of Trent Kalamack. Unfortunately she is captured and forced to stay in her mink shape. She is then taken to an illegal animal fight and put up against a giant savage rat. During the fight she realises that the rat is also a shapeshifter and they work together to escape, and end up as lovers... for a while anyway.
The "Rachel Morgan" books are by Kim Harrison. Their names are all plays on the names of films and include "The Good, the Bad, and the Undead" (2005) and "The Outlaw Demon Wails" (2008).
6. Anita Blake is a vampire executioner, lover of and human servant to the vampire Jean-Claude, Master of the City of St. Louis. What type of being is Anita originally? (Before she is further changed by magic)

Answer: Necromancer

Anita is a necromancer, and her inborn abilities give her control of, and power over, the dead. Since this includes vampires, it makes her work as a vampire executioner and Federal Marshal easier. As she comes to terms with being magically bound to both Jean Claude and Alpha Werewolf Richard, their powers and magical abilities increase.
The "Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter" books are written by Laurell K. Hamilton, and the first one "Guilty Pleasures" was first published in 1993. Volume 19 in the series, "Bullet", was published in 2010.
7. Harper Blaine is a private investigator, aided and abetted by her lover Quinton. After Harper died for two minutes and was revived by doctors, what did she become?

Answer: Greywalker

Harper can see into "the Grey", a sort of ghost world beyond and around our own, and communicate after a fashion with the beings who exist there. This makes her fascinating to various unsavoury and dangerous characters who want to use her for their own ends.
The first book about Harper, "Greywalker", is by Kat Richardson, and was published in 2006.
8. Raine Benares comes from a family of pirates and thieves. She ends up as the beloved partner of the Guardian Paladin Mychael, and magically linked to a soul stealing, mage eating, gemstone with the power to end the world. Before events overturned her 'quiet life', what talent did Raine have that enabled her to make a modest living?

Answer: She was a Seeker and tracked down missing items

Raine was a moderately talented Seeker sorceress, who tried to mind her own business and distance herself from the excesses of her family. Unfortunately, the Saghred gemstone chose her to be its new bondmate, thus making her a very important political pawn in the power struggle between various factions and races.
The Raine Benares book series began with "Magic Lost, Trouble Found" in 2007. They are by Lisa Shearin.
9. Sookie Stackhouse is unlucky in love, until she meets Eric. Eric is over a thousand years old and was a Viking before he was turned to be a vampire. He and Sookie end up married, although this happens according to vampire laws, not human ones, and Sookie doesn't even know for some time afterwards just how important the ritual was. How is Sookie different from ordinary people?

Answer: She is telepathic

Sookie is telepathic; she can hear the thoughts of everyone around her. This has caused her many problems and much pain growing up, and it is only when she meets her first vampire, Bill Compton, that she realises she cannot hear his thoughts.
The books about Sookie are written by Charlaine Harris, and the first one "Dead Until Dark" was published in 2001. They are also the basis for the television show "True Blood", first broadcast in 2008.
10. In the series of novels by Patricia Briggs, Mercy Thompson is the partner and lover of an alpha werewolf, but she herself is not a werewolf. What is she?

Answer: Coyote shapeshifter

It takes Mercy a long time to come to terms with her feelings for Adam, the alpha werewolf. Some members of the pack disagree with his decision to bond with Mercy, as this makes her the alpha female and second in command of the pack, and they see her as weaker than them, and inferior because she is 'only' a coyote and not a wolf.
The first book in the series about Mercy is called "Moon Called" and was published in 2006.
