Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many boys died in the book?

Answer: 3

The first boy who died was the "littlun" with the mulberry birthmark. He probably perished in the fire. The second boy to die was Simon, who was mistaken for the beast. And then there was Piggy, who died when a boulder rolled down on him.
2. Piggy tried to kill Jack.

Answer: false

Piggy was an ambassador and not an assassin. Jack and Roger became the ones who resorted to killing to get their point across.
3. Who scared the "littluns" by walking in the forest at night?

Answer: Simon

Simon, being a sensitive boy, needed to get away from the maddening crowd at times and would walk in the forest. The "littuns" imaginations would become stirred up and they thought "the beast" was prowling around outside.
4. Who was affected by the "taboo of the old life"?

Answer: Roger

The scene is a group of boys playing down at the beach. Roger is one of the "bigguns" who takes to bothering the "littluns." He starts to throw rocks but just misses the boys because the taboo of the old life was not to hurt people. Roger ends up drastically leaving this taboo behind.
5. What was a symbol of law and order or authority?

Answer: the conch

Piggy found the conch and became the protector and keeper of it. It was used at the meetings, and whoever held the shell was recognized as being the one who could speak during the meeting. It was no coincidence that when the shell was smashed there was no longer any true authority left on the island and chaos was the result.
6. What was the island's shape?

Answer: a boat

The book says the island was boat-shaped, which has some irony to it since they needed a boat in order to become rescued.
7. What nationality were the boys?

Answer: English

The boys all came from England, although they came from a variety of schools. This might explain the difficulty they had in functioning as a community since they didn't know one another very well to begin with.
8. The usual meeting place for the boys' meetings was held at Castle Rock.

Answer: false

Meetings were usually held down at the beach, but in actuality, wherever the conch was a meeting could be called to order.
9. William Golding went to college to become a scientist.

Answer: True

He indeed had every intention of becoming a scientist. He was enrolled in Brasenose College for Natural Science in 1930, but then he switched to English Literature in 1932. In 1934 he published "Poems".
10. What was another book that William Golding wrote?

Answer: The Inheritors

Golding wrote about twelve novels, although none quite achieved the fame that "Lord of the Flies" achieved. He received the Nobel Prize in 1983. Golding also wrote plays, essays, reviews, short stories, poems, and even a travel book. None of the other titles are real, or at least none that Golding wrote. He did write a play called "The Brass Butterfly" though.
