Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Questions from the first "Halo" book, "The Fall of Reach": Out of the 75 candidates for the SPARTAN Project, how many survived the augmentation process unharmed?

Answer: 33

At the time of the augmentation the candidates were only 14 years old but were as strong as a fully grown man. They were infused with the best medical advances of the time. The process enhanced their strength, speed, endurance, hearing, and bone strength. Unfortunately only 33 of the 75 candidates went through the process unharmed, another 12 survived but were so crippled many couldn't even walk.

The rest of the 30 boys and girls died painful deaths.
2. Why didn't the covenant destroy Sigma Octanus when they had the chance?

Answer: They wanted an artifact that told them where Halo 04 was located

When the covenant arrived at Sigma Octanus they wanted to find an artifact, kept at a museum, which would tell them where Halo 04 was located. At the time before he was a captain, Commander Keyes was doing a routine scouting job when he detected 4 covenant ships heading towards the planet of Sigma Octanus.

He miraciously destroyed all but one of the enemy's ships (the last one fled) but he soon learned that the main objective of those ships wasn't to burn the planet, but launch an invasion. The covenant had 34 dropships sent down to the planet to find this artifact, located in the city of Cote'd'Azur. Around 1600 marines were deployed to stop the invasion force. Unfortunately only 14 marines survived.

Then the SPARTANS were sent in, and they slaughtered 10,000 covenant troops with a nuclear device.
3. When the covenant attacked REACH how many human vessels were there to repel the attack?

Answer: 152

When the covenant attacked REACH there were 152 human ships waiting there. However, the covenant had 314 ships. Considering the fact that the humans only won space battles when they outnumbered the covenant ships 3 to 1, there was no way the humans stood any chance of winning.

The SPARTANS were on board the Pillar Of Autumn when the attack began. The covenant had launched hundreds of dropships just like on Sigma Octanus, and the SPARTANS were sent down to defend the planet. Unfortunately they were outnumbered by tens of thousands of covenant troops and only one SPARTAN made it out alive.

This SPARTAN was the Master Chief.
4. Now for "Halo" "The Flood" questions. How many ODSTs (Orbital Drop Shock Troopers) and marines evacuated from the Pillar Of Autumn before she crashed on the surface of Halo?

Answer: 600

Although around 600 marines escaped from the Autumn there were many more human personnel who also escaped. These included medics, technicians and other types of people. While the humans were on the Halo ring they were able to put up a formidable defence against the covenant.
5. What is the REAL name of the Elite that the story follows, who relentlessly pursues the Master Chief in order to kill him?

Answer: Zuku Zamamee

Throughout the book we see the tale of the Spec Ops leader, Zuka Zamamee, as he continues to hunt the Master Chief along with his reluctant servant Yayap the grunt. He attempts to kill the Master Chief 3 times.
The first time is while the Chief is searching for the Silent Cartographer. He lies in ambush while two hunters attempt to kill him. This first attempt fails when a grunt accidentally shoots one of hunters in the back, causing it to stumble into its partner, which causes them both to go down.
The second time is during a battle at the human's base, in which he learns that the human he is looking for (the Master Chief) is not even there. Therefore he goes into hiding as a guard at the Pillar Of Autumn, for fear of having his head taken for failing to find and kill the Master Chief.
The last attempt he makes is on the Pillar Of Autumn while the Master Chief is trying to get off Halo before it blows. But, after all his troubles he is killed by a simple grenade thrown by the Master Chief.
6. How long has 343 Guilty Spark been in charge of Halo's defences?

Answer: 101,217 years

343 Guilty Spark was left behind by his creators to contain the flood in case of an outbreak. His protocols state that he must find a so called "reclaimer" to retrieve the index, so that the Halo can be activated. If the ring is activated it will destroy all sentient life capable of sustaining the flood (meaning capable of being infected) for a distance of 25,000 light years.
7. How did the humans plan to get off the Halo ring?

Answer: Capture a covenant ship called the Truth and Reconciliation, and fly it off the ring.

The human leader planned the raid on the Truth and Reconciliation so that they would control the most important parts of the ship in a matter of minutes. By that time the flood had been released, and were already on board the ship when the humans captured it.

However, the human leader was blinded by glory and instead of completely destroying the flood on the ship before they flew back to earth, he wanted a few specimens for study. Although his advisors told him that one flood specimen escaping could lead to the entire planet falling under the control of the flood, he stubburnly refused to listen. Eventually just before take off, his lieutenant saw the dangers in her leader's plan, therefore she destroyed a power source for the ship.

This made it fall down to the ring leaving no survivors.
8. Now questions from "Halo: First Strike": How many humans escaped off the ring before it blew?

Answer: 5

The survivors' names were Sergeant Johnson, Haverson, Polaski, Corporal Locklear and the Master Chief. The first four escaped by flying a pelican dropship off the ring before it blew.
However, only Sergeant Johnson and the Master Chief made it back to Earth, the rest were killed in action.
9. What was the name of the Command and Control station the covenant were using before they launched their attack on Earth?

Answer: Unyielding Hierophant

The survivors of Halo plus a few SPARTANS found on REACH discovered where the covenant were preparing for their attack on Earth. There were over five-hundred ships docking with the station. The SPARTANS were sent to detonate the Command and Control station's generators which would create a huge explosion and therefore destroy most of the five-hundred ships there.

They succeeded in blowing the generators of the station and stopping the invasion of Earth... for now.
10. Why did the covenant want the crystal buried underneath Menachite Mountain on REACH?

Answer: It made travelling in space faster

The covenant chose not to burn all of REACH. They left one section untouched. It was here that Menachite Mountain was based and where 5 SPATANS were hiding. The covenant tore up the mountain just to get this crystal. Had they gotten it, they would have been able to travel through space 10 times faster, and therefore get to Earth faster.

The crystal was eventually destroyed by Corporal Locklear who gave his life to destroy it.
