Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What happened to Bobby Garfield's father?

Answer: Died of a heart attack in somebody else's house

Randall Garfield was a real-estate agent, so thats how he ended up on some guy's kitchen floor. Bobby was three years old at the time (now he's eleven), and his mom Liz didn't think of his father too fondly. Her favorite saying to tell Bobby when money was tight was "Your father didn't exactly leave us well off, you know."
2. What thing did Bobby want for his birthday?

Answer: The Schwinn bike

The Schwinn was red and silver, sitting in the window of Harwich Western Auto. It cost three monthly payments of $11.50 and was Bobby's ideal birthday present. Of course, his mom used the "Your father didn't exactly leave us well off" saying and "Life isn't fair". So, Bobby started saving up himself, and made a "BIKE FUND". What he did get was an adult library card which he liked very much anyway.
3. What drink did Ted Brautigan always seem to offer Bobby?

Answer: Rootbeer

Yeah, even though Bobby didn't like rootbeer too much, he always drank it with Ted. Ted Brautigan was an old man who moved into the apartment at the beginning of the book. Bobby's mom didn't trust him, but he became one of Bobby's best friends. He gave Bobby the book "Lord of the Flies" which Bobby regards as the best book ever made.
4. What happens to Ted sometimes that freaks Bobby out?

Answer: He blanks out and talks about weird stuff

Ted occasionally stares out into nothing and talks about "The Beam" and "Low men in yellow coats". He says he feels itching behind the eyes and warns Bobby to tell him if he feels it too. Eventually, Bobby learns that this happens when Ted senses the "low men" and he begins to sense them also. Sometimes black threads cover his vision when he sees them and he feels tingling in his eyes.
5. What signs does Ted tell Bobby to look out for, signs of the low men?

Answer: Moons and stars drawn next to hopscotch squares

Other signs were: Men with alcohol in paper bags, men who think hats with feathers on them are sophisticated, loud and vulgar cars, lost pet posters on telephone poles with phone numbers listed, upside down "car for sale by owner" notices on the bulletins, kite tails hanging from telephone lines, church bells ringing the wrong number of hours for the time, and church vandalism reports in the newspaper.
6. Who used to pick on Bobby, Sully John, and Carol?

Answer: The St. Gabriel's boys

The St. Gabe's boys always picked on and bullied the three pals. One time, Harry Doolin, Willie Shearman, and Richie O' Meara picked on the three while they were walking. Rionda, Carol's mother's friend, told them to get lost or she'd tell the priest (who would tell their parents). They scrammed, but that might have made it worse.
7. Where did Bobby go with Ted while his mom was at a "seminar"?

Answer: Down there

Ted and Bobby went on a little drive and ended up "down there". At least that's what Ted calls it. It's where a whole bunch of different people, with different cultures, live together (if you could call it that) and where gangs and little shabby shops, bars, and "casinos" flourished.

Here's a quote from Ted: "...where you can buy sex or marijuana or a parrot that talks dirty, where men sit talking on stoops like those men across the street, where woman always seem to be yelling for their kids to come in unless they want a whipping, and where wine always comes in a paper sack...where you don't have any use for your last name and you can buy almost anything if you have cash in your pocket." Well, that sums it up. Ted went there to make a bet on a fight that he had inside info on.
8. Who told Bobby the good things about his father?

Answer: Alanna

Alanna (who Bobby thought was Len Files' sister) told Bobby how his father was a good man, and would "give the shirt right off his back" and "never buy a drunk a drink" and always play "that Jo Stafford song" and ask Len to turn it up.

Len and Alanna Files worked at the bar/casino that Ted went in to make the bet.

This made Bobby think about how his mom never told him about the good side of his father, or, never knew.
9. Where did Bobby kiss Carol?

Answer: On the top of the Ferris wheel

Bobby never liked his mom calling Carol his girlfriend, but it turned out she actually was. One time Bobby broke down crying and Carol took him into the forest and held him, calming him down. Awwww, so sweet!
10. What happened to Carol?

Answer: The St. Gabe's boys beat her up with a bat

The boys got her back for Rionda telling them off. They caught her and hit her some with a baseball bat. It started out a "joke", but then it got a little out of hand and they dislocated her shoulder. When they heard it crack and her scream, they ran away. Bobby found her and carried her all the way up the hill and to the apartment where Ted fixed her shoulder.
11. What happened when Bobby's mom got home from the seminar?

Answer: She caught Ted fixing Carol's shoulder, and thought he was molesting her

She had gotten beaten by the guys that invited her to the "seminar" and was in very bad shape, not to mention in a horrible mood. She got home and found Carol with her shirt off and Ted touching her (popping her shoulder) and immediately assumed he was molesting her (which is a pretty good assumption if you didn't know the situation).

She threatened to call the cops, but let Ted go. She questioned Carol and she told her everything, but you know Liz did not completely get over it.
12. Bobby saw the low men.

Answer: True

When Ted left to get away from the place (because he could sense the low men coming for him) Bobby followed him. First Bobby met up with a Puerto Rican gang called the Diablos, and almost got pounded. He had met the leader back in The Corner Pocket (the place Ted made the bet) and made friends with him. So, when the leader saw Bobby again, he told his crew to back off and Bobby went on his way. Finally he found Ted, but the low men were already there. The cars were parked, and they were loud and seemed "alive" and really bright. The men stepped out and surrounded Ted and Bobby, and one caressed Bobby's neck. They had voices that sounded like "...his vocal cords were packed with bugs-locusts or maybe crickets." Bobby thought he could see what was under their "skin", a thin, tall, pure white, sharp-toothed, black-tongued, dark-eyed, red-lipped... monster. They took Ted away.

If you have ever seen "Pan's Labyrinth", then you know that white thing in the place with all the food? That's what I think the low men look like under their yellow coats.
13. Where did Sully go for a week?

Answer: Camp Winnie

When Sully came back, he and Bobby had drifted away. Sully was on the Lions baseball team and Bobby was on the Wolves baseball team. When Bobby freaked out on the umpire, Sully tried to find out what was wrong with him. Bobby told him to shut up, and he and Sully probably weren't too friendly with each other anymore.
14. What did Bobby do right before he moved from Harwich, Connecticut to Danvers, Massachusetts?

Answer: Beat up Harry Doolin

He got back at Harry for beating up Carol. He waited for Harry to come from his job and walk down the path. He jumped out and got him a few times with the baseball bat and threatened to kill him and burn down his house if he touched him or Carol ever again. Officer Raymer came to the apartment and Harry and his mother tried to get Bobby in trouble. Bobby lied pretty good, and since Harry was so much bigger than Bobby, the cop "knew" Harry was making it up.

He didn't know that the element of surprise was more important than size. Cool I rhymed!
15. What did Ted send Bobby, through Carol?

Answer: Rose petals

Bobby went in a downward spiral when he moved and had lost hope of letters from Carol or Ted. He had went from innocent kid to bad boy. He was sent to correctional facilities more than once, for beating up a kid and stealing his guitar, possession of marijuana, cigarettes, and alcohol. Yeah, bad boy. He got a letter from Carol telling him that there was an envelope attached from Ted Brautigan. He tore it open and rose petals fell out, telling Bobby he was, in fact, still alive.
