Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Perry Smith and Richard Hickock murdered the Clutter family in 1959. Capote's book dealt more with Perry Smith than Dick Hickock. Who were the members of Perry's immediate family?

Answer: Tex, Flo, Jimmy, Fern and Bobo

His parents, Tex John Smith and Flo Buckskin, were rodeo performers. Perry and Barbara ("Bobo") were the only surviving children. Jimmy committed suicide after shooting his wife, and Fern (who changed her name to Joy) was an alcoholic who jumped or fell from a hotel window in San Francisco.
2. Why did Perry get his picture in the paper?

Answer: He returned from the Korean War

Specifically, he was the first Korean War combat veteran to return to the state of Alaska.
3. When Dick and Perry were on the run in their stolen car, who were the interesting hitchhikers they picked up?

Answer: Bill and Johnny

Bill was the boy and Johnny was his grandfather. After Johnny's sister died, they had no home and were wandering Texas in search of family, though they had no idea which city their family would be in. What was so interesting about them? See the next question.
4. Bill financed his and Johnny's travel by collecting bottles and turning them in for refund money. What kind of bottles did he say were "sure fire"?

Answer: Dr. Pepper, Pepsi, Coke, White Rock and Nehi

They filled Dick and Perry's car with bottles and split the refund money with them. Bill used the money "to blow us to a real feed". Johnny ate pancakes all night and Bill gorged on potato chips and ice cream.
5. Richard Hickock had an ugly side. What was it?

Answer: All of these

Bleaugh!
6. Perry Smith and Richard Hickock were in devastating accidents involving motor vehicles. Which of the following are true?

Answer: All of these

In an effort to use the car accident to excuse Dick Hickock's criminal behavior, his father testified that he changed and "he just wasn't the same boy" after the 1950 head injury. Since Dick's police record began long before that, the prosecuting attorney asked dryly if that meant that "after 1950 he became a good boy?"
7. Perry Smith whipped a man to death in Las Vegas just for the thrill of doing it.

Answer: False

Perry made up that story just to impress Dick.
8. What was Mr. Clutter doing in his office the day he was killed?

Answer: Buying life insurance

It was pure coincidence that he was buying life insurance the day he was killed. When the salesman, Mr. Johnson, heard of the murders, he still had Mr. Clutter's uncashed first premium check. He "did the honorable thing and deposited the check". The investigators quickly discarded the insurance payout as a motive.
9. Why didn't the Clutters' dog, Teddy, bark at the intruders?

Answer: He was afraid of guns

The Clutters had a lot of pets. Besides Teddy, who was a stray Kenyon adopted, Nancy had a horse named Babe and her "closest cat friend, Evinrude".
10. Who were Don Cullivan and Joe James?

Answer: Perry's character witnesses

Perry had lived with Joe James while recovering from his motorcycle accident. Don Cullivan was in the army with Perry, read about his arrest and felt it was his duty as a Christian to write him and offer his friendship and support. When Cullivan came to testify, Perry threw an elaborate dinner for him (all cooked by the Sheriff Wendell Meier's wife, Josie).

She loaned them her best silver and table linens for the occasion.
11. While on trial, Perry made a pet of a squirrel who he lured in through his cell window. What did he name it?

Answer: Red

Though he played freely around the cell while Perry was there and let Perry feed him, after Perry was sent away to await execution, Red wouldn't have anything to do with anyone else.
12. While Dick and Perry were on death row at the Kansas State Penitentiary, they spent time with some equally notorious murderers: Lowell Lee Andrews, Ronald York and James Latham.

Answer: True

York and Latham murdered seven people "because we hate the world". They were hanged June 22, 1965. A Kansas newspaper called Lowell Lee Andrews "The Nicest Boy in Wolcott [Kansas]." He murdered his whole family in an effort to live out his fantasy of being a cold-hearted contract killer.

He was hanged November 30, 1962. The lyrics of the Doors' song, "The End", bear an eerie resemblance to Lowell Lee's crime.
13. Hickock and Smith ordered the same thing for their last meal. What did they order?

Answer: Shrimp, French fries, garlic bread, whipped cream and strawberries, ice cream

Hickock ate, Smith did not.
14. The investigators followed a false lead from Nancy Clutter's diary: She thought one of her cats had been poisoned deliberately. What was the cat's name?

Answer: Boobs

I love that name, "Evinrude". (For non-US readers, that's a brand of outboard boat motor.) Courthouse Pete was Alvin Dewey's family cat. He was so preoccupied with the case that he nearly forgot to pick him up from the veterinarian. While Mr. and Mrs. Dewey were celebrating the arrest of the Clutter's murderers, Pete got up on the counter and ate all the crab salad Mrs. Dewey had made for a party.
15. When were Smith and Hickock executed?

Answer: April 1965

April 14, 1965, to be exact.
