Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Your journey begins in Norway, where Ibsen sits with a doll's house in front of him. "This is for a play I'm writing right now", he says, "but I can't think of a good name to Mr Helmer's wife." Can you help him?

Answer: Nora

Aase and Solveig are from Ibsen's play "Peer Gynt", and Hedda comes from "Hedda Gabler". Nora is the wife of Torvald Helmer in the play "A Doll's House".
2. Ibsen advised you to go south. After walking a while you meet a young doctor who looks as miserable as he can. "My monster killed my wife, and it's all my fault!" You immediately guess who the pale doctor is, and you have to admit that he isn't exactly innocent. Who is the doctor's wife?

Answer: Elizabeth Lavenza

Elizabeth is Victor Frankenstein's wife, Justine is the girl who gets the blame for killing Victor's brother, and Margaret is the sister of the man who takes Dr Frankenstein on his ship. Mary Shelley is, of course, the author of the masterpiece.
3. Somewhere in Wessex, England, you run in to a man who looks a bit confused. "I just sold my wife" he says. "My wife and our little girl..." What is his name?

Answer: Michael Henchard

Michael Henchard is the mayor of Casterbridge in Thomas Hardy's novel with the same name. Alec D'Urbervilles is the man who seduces Tess, and Angel Clare the one who was supposed to marry her. Both are from the novel "Tess of the D'Urbervilles". Gabriel Oak comes from "Far From The Madding Crowd".
4. Your search has brought you to London where you meet a little boy. "I just wanted some more porridge, and now they're trying to turn me into a thief!" he says. You ask him if he has seen the white rabbit, and he says he will help you if you know his name. Do you?

Answer: Oliver Twist

"Oliver Twist" was adapted to become the stage musical "Oliver!". There have been numerous movies based on both the book and the musical. David Copperfield and Nicholas Nickleby featured in the Dickens novels named after each character, while Philip Pirrin, better known as Pip, was the central figure in "Great Expectations".
5. The little boy told you to try in another capital, Dublin. So you run away to catch the next ship to Ireland. When you arrive there on the 16th June 1904, a young man comes and asks you to listen to his theory. "I will if you help me" you answer. But since he's never heard of a white rabbit, he doesn't want to tell you about his theory. Can you guess what his theory is about anyway?

Answer: Shakespeare

Stephen Dedalus (from Joyce's novel "Ulysses") had a theory about Shakespeare. To be honest I didn't get what he wanted to say with his theory... The 16th June is in Dublin celebrated as Bloomsday and a true Joyceist has, like Leopold Bloom, a fried kidney for breakfast that day!
6. Back in London it's Christmas time! You stop to listen to some happy people singing Christmas carols. Behind you stands an angry man who keeps murmuring things like "Humbug!" and "Poor people shouldn't be happy!" You turn around to tell him to shut up, but a little girl tells you not to bother. "He's always angry and doesn't like Christmas. His name is... Oh, I forgot it! Do you know his name?"

Answer: Scrooge

The book that features all of these characters is Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol". I always read it before Christmas to get in the right mood!
7. After a shortcut by way of Wells' time machine, you find yourself in ancient Greece, right in the middle of the Trojan war. Since your only weapon is a deck of cards you consider it wisest to return to the time machine. On your way back to civilization you think about what you saw. Do you remember who wrote about the Trojan war?

Answer: Homer

Homer wrote two of the most famous works of Greek literature, "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey". "The Iliad" tells of the end of the Trojan War, and the Odyssey follows the subsequent homeward voyage of Odysseus.
8. Finally back in 19th century England! When you step out of the time machine you see a woman and a little boy passing by you in a carriage. You try to get her to stop so you can ask her about the rabbit, but she says she is in a hurry. "I'm taking my Linton away from that evil, evil Heathcliff! But try in America, they'll know!" Who was the woman?

Answer: Isabella Linton

Isabella Linton was married to Heathcliff in Emily Bronte's "Wuthering Hights".
9. When you arrive to America (Boston, to be exact), a little girl stands there to meet you. "I'll soon go away with my mother, but the man with the hand over his heart won't come with us." she says. When you ask her about the rabbit she answers "I know where he is. But I won't tell you unless you guess my name!" Make a guess and finish the search!

Answer: Pearl

The book is "The Scarlet Letter" by Nathaniel Hawthorne.
10. The little girl whispered in your ear, "The white rabbit is on board Captain Nemo's ship." Where will you go to look for that elusive white rabbit?

Answer: Nautilus

Nemo is the captain of the submarine Nautilus in "20000 Leagues Under the Sea" by Jules Verne. Pequod is the Ahab's ship in "Moby Dick", the Beagle is the ship Charles Darwin sailed on, and Mary Celeste is a famous ghost-ship. Maybe a submarine is a little weird place for a rabbit to hide, but after all, he's not any old rabbit.
