Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Basta and Flatnose come to the apartment where Meggie is staying. Who does Basta pretend to be, so Meggie opens the door?

Answer: Pippo

Meggie tries to read aloud, in secret, from a book, like Mo does. But nothing happens. Mo is repairing some of Fenoglio's books. Mo has gone to collect Elinor from the airport. Basta and Flatnose go to see Fenoglio. They don't believe Fenoglio wrote 'Inkheart'. They are going to take Meggie and Fenoglio to Capricorn's village.
2. What nickname do Fenoglio and Meggie have for Mortola?

Answer: Magpie

Dustfinger plans to enter Capricorn's village alone. He still has friend in the village. He is going to meet one of Capricorn's maids. Farid says that Dustfinger has a photograph of a woman in his rucksack. He insists on going with Dustfinger; he is frightened of ghosts.
Mortola is Capricorn's mother. Mortola takes Basta's keys away from him, he can't be trusted with them any more. Capricorn is away from the village so Mo and Meggie are taken to a cowshed, to make themselves comfortable.
3. What is special about Resa, Capricorn's maid?

Answer: She can't speak

Resa and Dustfinger communicate with notes. Resa taught Dustfinger how to read. She is one of Capricorn's favourite maids. Dustfinger tells her about Silvertongue (Mo). Dustfinger tells her that he wants to get hold of the book.
4. What profession was Capricorn's father, according to Fenoglio?

Answer: Blacksmith

Fenoglio tells Capricorn, in the church, a few things about himself. Things that he could only know if he had created him. Capricorn picked his name at fifteen, after the star sign he was born under. Capricorn plans to keep Fenoglio and Meggie in the village until Mo turns up.
5. Who is stationed outside Meggie and Fenoglio's room?

Answer: Flatnose

Mo is angry with Dustfinger at first, because he thought he'd told Capricorn where he and Meggie were. Dustfinger and Farid tie up Mo and Elinor so that they can't escape. Dustfinger says he will try to find out where Meggie is being held prisoner. Farid will stay with Mo and Elinor; Dustfinger is going to the village alone. Meggie plans to run away from the village, but Fenoglio says he'll think of something.
6. What children's book does Fenoglio find in a room in Capricorn's house?

Answer: 'Peter Pan'

Basta, Flatnose and Mortola are waiting for Dustfinger in Resa's room. Basta says Dustfinger wants to get the book. Dustfinger is taken to the church while Mortola goes to tell Capricorn. Meggie manages to read Tinker Bell out of the book. Basta has come to take Meggie to Capricorn. He captures Tinker Bell too. Fenoglio is left in the cowshed.
7. Who says 'It's not a story for this hour of the night'?

Answer: Fenoglio

Capricorn has got Resa and Dustfinger tied up in nets, in the church. Meggie is going to be Capricorn's new reader. She is going to read from 'Inkheart' and bring out a character for him, in two days time. Darius will carry out an experiment with Meggie first; to make sure Tinker Bell didn't turn up by accident. Resa fascinates Meggie. Meggie thinks Resa is her mother. Fenoglio says he created a character in 'Inkheart' called the Shadow.

He appears only when Capricorn calls him. Fenoglio thinks Capricorn wants Meggie to read out the Shadow.

But Fenoglio has a plan - Mo had suggested it to him - and it might be their only chance.
8. What fruit does Fenoglio give to Darius?

Answer: Apricot

Dustfinger has not returned. Farid unties Mo and Elinor. He heads to the village. Mo gives Farid a letter to try and give to Meggie. Gwin goes with Farid. Darius comes to Fenoglio and Meggie's room. 'Inkheart' is being kept in a secret place until Meggie is to read it aloud.

They are going to try and read out a character from Han Christian Anderson's fairy tales. Meggie is to read aloud to Mortola. She successfully reads out the tin soldier. Fenoglio tells Meggie to ask Mortola for some sheets of paper and a pencil. Gwin, the marten, comes to their window with Mo's message; Mo's message is written in Elfish, so it can't be read by anyone else.
9. Where were Dustfinger and Resa held immediately prior to the execution ceremony?

Answer: Crypt

Dustfinger is afraid of death. They keep each other company by telling stories. Mo reads Meggie's letter, also written in Elfish. She tells him how she can read things out of books too, and how Capricorn wants her to read to him. Capricorn's men are going to kill Dustfinger and Resa. Farid, Mo and Elinor plan to go into the village and rescue Meggie. Farid suggests they use fire. Mo says that is their last option.
10. Who does Fenoglio do a deal with, for paper?

Answer: Basta

Fenoglio says if Basta gives him paper and a pen, he'll put a hex on Mortola. Then Basta can get his keys back. Meggie is given the tin soldier, which she read out.
11. Who was the tin soldier in love with, in his story?

Answer: Ballerina

Fenoglio has written an alternative ending to 'The Tin Soldier'. In the original, he dies, with the ballerina, but in Fenoglio's they live happily ever after, Fenoglio wants to see if Meggie can read the tin soldier back into the story. Meggie succeeds. Fenoglio says he will write an alternative 'Inkheart' with a different Shadow. This Shadow will kill Capricorn.
12. What does Mortola keep in a wooden casket?

Answer: Snakes

The policeman, who takes Elinor to Capricorn's village, is known there. Capricorn's men had threatened to hurt his children. Elinor tells Capricorn that Mo and Farid are dead. Elinor is taken to the crypt, where Resa and Basta are being held. Inside the casket, with the snakes, is the copy of 'Inkheart'. Meggie has to read 'Inkheart' silently so she is ready for that evening.
13. Who throws a stone at Basta?

Answer: Resa

Meggie asks to be taken down to the crypt, to see Dustfinger one last time. Meggie knows, just by looking at Resa, that she is her mother. Dustfinger tricks Basta. Both Dustfinger and Resa have the opportunity to escape - Basta is in the cage - but Resa stays, to protect Meggie. Resa is caged up too, and Meggie is taken back to the cowshed. There is no sign of Dustfinger.
14. Where is Dustfinger hiding?

Answer: Basta's house

Mo and Farid plan to start a fire in the village. It will be a distraction, as they try to save Meggie and Dustfinger. Dustfinger rescues Tinker Bell from a glass water jug, where Basta has been keeping her. He gives her milk. Fenoglio has written an alternative ending to 'Inkheart' and a different Shadow character, one that will kill Capricorn and his men.

The story is on a piece of paper, which Meggie hides up the sleeve of her dress. Resa's real name is Theresa. Elinor, Resa and Basta are caged and in the arena, where Meggie is going to read aloud.
15. Who does Meggie manage to read into 'Inkheart'?

Answer: Fenoglio

Mo pretends to be the crocodile, out of 'Peter Pan', by making a ticking noise, to tell her that he is close. Meggie succeeds in reading out the Shadow. She isn't able to read the last sentence so Mo appears and reads that Capricorn dies. Some of Capricorn's men have either been killed or vanished too.

They manage to get rid of the Shadow. When the Shadow disappears, lots of fairies, trolls and glass men appear. Mortola and Basta have not disappeared however. Basta tries to keep Resa prisoner, but Resa and Elinor are freed. Dustfinger plans to find someone else to read him into 'Inkheart'.

Although he encourages Farid to stay with Mo and Meggie - he knows Farid likes Meggie very much - Farid goes off with him.
