Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the beginning of the book Eve and Roarke are on the last week of their honeymoon at Roarke's as yet unfinished off-world resort. What is the name of this resort?

Answer: Olympus

The trip to the Olympus Resort was Eve's first off planet trip and she had been very reluctant to go, so much so that she refused to board the transport, so Roarke had to carry her on board over his shoulder with her struggling and cursing him all the way.

The Resort was due to open the following year so they had it to themselves apart from the construction crew, engineers, architects and other staff involved in the project.
2. What is the name of the engineer whose apparent 'self-termination' occurs at the Resort shortly before Eve and Roarke are due to come home?

Answer: Drew Mathias

Eve and Roarke's evening is interrupted by the arrival of Jack Carter, who has just found his roommate Drew Mathias hanging naked from the chandelier in the suite they shared. S T Fitzhugh is the second 'self-termination' victim of the killer. He was a leading defence attorney Eve had crossed paths with in court in the past and Leanore Bastwick is his colleague and partner in his law firm.
3. Officer Delia Peabody is assigned to Eve as her permanent aide in 'Rapture in Death'. True or false?

Answer: True

First seen in 'Glory in Death' when she served as Eve's temporary aide, Peabody has earned Eve's trust and respect. Responsible and resourceful, she was brought up in the Earth religion of 'Free-Ageism' by her family but rather than follow their lifestyle she decided she wanted a career in the Police. Having worked with her, Eve is impressed by her capabilities and asks Commander Whitney for Peabody's permanent transferral to her unit, which he grants.
4. Where do Eve and Peabody first meet music engineer Jess Barrow?

Answer: His studio

Mavis contacts Eve and is very excited because she doing a recording session at Jess's studio which she hopes will make her career, and asks Eve to come and watch. Eve stalls, not wanting to go, but agrees when Mavis tells her how much it would mean to her. She tells Eve she has already invited Roarke and he will be there, and invites Peabody too. When they arrive they find a party going on, and it is there that they meet Jess for the first time.
5. What is the surname of the East Washington Senator who was the killer's third victim?

Answer: Pearly

Senator George Pearly killed himself by jumping from a window in the Capitol Building. Eve, accompanied by Peabody, is allowed access to his personal, financial and political files at the Security Building in East Washington under tight security. Once they are alone Eve secretly risks recording the data, using Peabody as a shield so as not to be observed by the security cameras.
6. After a busy day at work Eve returns home to find Jess and Mavis's partner, Leonardo, waiting for her. Jess has come to ask that she and Roarke host a party to publicise Mavis's new demo disc, and gives her a copy of it. What effect does watching the disc have on Eve?

Answer: Nightmare

After watching Mavis's demo disc in her bath, Eve goes to bed and has a violent nightmare about her childhood with her abusive father. Roarke comes home late and finds her, and wakes her up to get her out of it. It turns out that Jess Barrow has doctored the disc with a subliminal suggestion to make Eve have the nightmare, which makes her suspect he is responsible for what is now known to be the murders.

When questioned he admits controlling the minds of Eve, Roarke, Mavis and others by subliminal manipulation, but denies he is behind the four murders.

He is, however, arrested for illegally influencing brain patterns with his subliminal suggestions and intent to sexually molest.
7. What physical sign did their autopsies show the first three victims to have in common that alerted Eve to the possibility that the deaths were related?

Answer: Burn mark on brain

After the autopsy on the second victim, Fitzhugh, the Chief Medical Examiner, Dr Morris, contacts Eve to tell her his examination has revealed a pinpoint burn in the cerebral hemisphere of Fitzhugh's brain, the area where personality and decision making is located. Eve, still puzzling over the apparent suicide of Mathias, investigates further and discovers that he, too, had this unusual burn, as did Senator Pearly.

When the fourth victim Cerise Devane, CEO of Tattler Enterprises, plunged naked from the roof of the Tattler Building there was insufficient post-mortem evidence, but she too had been killed in the same way.
8. After the party to promote Mavis's career, who assists Feeney to dismantle Jess Barrow's music console?

Answer: Roarke

Roarke assists Feeney to take the console apart. Under several layers of security they discover a scanner with brain wave patterns stored on it. After further investigation Feeney tells Eve her brain pattern showed up, as did Roarke's, Peabody's and Mavis's. The patterns of the murder victims, though, had not been there.
9. When Dr Mira asserts that Jess Barrow does not fit the psychological profile of a murderer, from whom does Eve request a second opinion?

Answer: Dr Reeana Ott

Reeanna Ott is the brains behind the murders. William Shaffer is her partner. Arthur Foxx is the partner of the second victim, lawyer F T Fitzhugh, and Dr Wang is the doctor on the Olympus Resort who conducted the autopsy on Drew Mathias and concluded, wrongly, that it was suicide.

Reeanna and William were responsible for creating virtual relaxation goggles for a company belonging to Roarke. Eve discovered that Reeanna was the murderer; she had been controlling the minds of the victims with subliminal messages via the VR goggles, urging them to kill themselves. She had taken advantage of William's technical know-how on mind-control without his knowledge, by subliminal suggestions learnt through her online contact with Jess under her username Mindoc (Mind Doctor).
10. At the end of the book, what is the fate of the murderer?

Answer: Suicide

When Eve sees Drew Mathias's name on Reeanna Ott's computer screen, Reeanna realises Eve has discovered that she is the murderer. She pulls an illegal stunner on Eve and tells her to lay her weapon down or she will fire it. Eve outwits her by calling for the lights to go out, grabs her weapon and a fight ensues. Gaining the upper hand, Eve has Reeanna on the floor with her weapon pointed at her and is going to bring her in, but rather than face the prospect of prison Reeanna twists Eve's weapon round and fires it at her throat, killing herself instantly.
