Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant", which shy relatives of the evil ur-viles serve the Land and provide a rest area for weary travelers?

Answer: Waynhim

The Waynhim were created by the Demondim and were eyeless like their ur-vile cousins. The rest areas that they maintain are called Waymeets. The Elohim are a haughty spirit people while cavewights are cave-dwelling minions of Lord Foul. Forestals protect the ancient Forest of the Land.

Stephen R. Donaldson is the author of the series.
2. These huge horned brutes are warriors who fight for the Dark One in the "Wheel of Time". They are usually controlled by another evil minion and will kill and maim indiscriminately. Which of the following are they?

Answer: Trollocs

Trollocs were controlled by a Myrddraal (also called a Fade). Fades were eyeless and difficult to kill, but once eliminated, their less intelligent Trolloc army would become confused and disorganized. The Forsaken were evil immortals who served the Dark One. Ogiers somewhat resembled Trollocs in size but were benign and loved the pursuit of knowledge and dedicated themselves to the groves of trees, called steddings.

Robert Jordan was the author of the series "The Wheel of Time".
3. Gandalf the Grey fought this creature in Moria and fell into the abyss with him. Who was this terrifying whip-wielder?

Answer: The Balrog

This is of course from "The Fellowship of the Ring" by J.R.R. Tolkien.

The Balrog was a fire-wielding creature who inhabited the mines of Moria. Gandalf would, of course, return to continue his opposition to Sauron. Gollum is well-known as the creature whose soul had been consumed by the Ring. Uruk-hai were large orcs and Ents were the tree-like creatures who guarded the ancient forests.
4. Rontu is a wild creature who befriends a young girl named Karana who finds herself alone in "Island of the Blue Dolphins". What kind of animal is Rontu?

Answer: Dog

Karana is marooned on the island after her people depart ahead of a large storm. Rontu is one of the wild dogs also left behind and after Karana injures him, she nurses him to health and he remains as her companion.

This Newberry Award winning book was written by Scott O'Dell.
5. These creatures, resembling a large otter, have the capacity of human speech in "The Belgariad" by David Eddings.

Answer: Fenlings

Fenlings live in the Drasnian Fens while Hrulgin are very large horses with fangs. Raveners are constantly hungry, primarily feeding on the dead. Alorns are humans who live in the Isle of the Winds in Belar.
6. What is the name of the golden dragon who is ridden by Lessa in the "Dragonriders of Pern" series by Anne McCaffrey?

Answer: Ramoth

Ramoth is a dragon queen as are all gold dragons and is ridden by Lessa, a Weyrwoman who has special mental abilities. Mnementh and Nemorth are both dragons while Jaxom is the rider of a white dragon named Ruth.
7. Which is the giant turtle that carries the four elephants that support Discworld?

Answer: A'Tuin

Since the giant Star Turtle moves through space, the constellations and visible stars change radically over time from the Discworld perspective.

The Discworld series is authored by Terry Pratchett.
8. Which race of fairy-like beings inhabit the region of Shadowline in Southmarch?

Answer: Qar

The Shadowline is an area of fog in the kingdom of Shadowmarch from the book "Shadowmarch" by Tad Williams. At one time the Qar were the dominant species of this world.
9. Which of the following are the mountain giants from Guy Gavriel Kay's "Fionavar Tapestry" trilogy?

Answer: Paraiko

The Paraiko are such a peaceful race that they will not even act in self-defence. Anyone who harms one of these giants immediately falls under a curse.
10. Tarzan is a familiar figure in T.V. and the movies as is his chimpanzee friend, Cheetah. What is the name of the primate companion of the Tarzan in Edgar Rice Burrough's books?

Answer: N'kima

The Tarzan in the book series is much more interesting than the one dimensional movie character, but he has no chimpanzee pal named Cheetah. N'kima is a monkey who must often be cajoled to assist Tarzan. Tantor is the name given by the Great Apes for the elephant and Kala was the name of the ape who raised the orphaned baby John Clayton to manhood as Tarzan of the Apes.
