Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What specific feeling is Jonas experiencing about the upcoming December Ceremony?

Answer: Apprehensive

He called his feeling "frightened" at first but sought out the exact answer - apprehensive - because of the community's emphasis on precise language.
2. At what age were children supposed to give up their "Comfort Object"?

Answer: Eight

The "Comfort Object" is a stuffed toy animal which provides children with their only exposure of any kind to animals.
3. Where was the only place that Jonas encountered locked doors?

Answer: at the Annex

The locked Annex door made Jonas feel uneasy. He had never before encountered a locked door in the community.
4. What did the Receiver's receptionist's standing indicate?

Answer: that even adults would be showing Jonas respect

Standing when someone enters a room is still seen as an act of respect.
5. Choose the quote that showed that the book's conflict had moved from simply thoughts to action.

Answer: "Let's change it!"

The quote showed that Jonas was now committed to acting - to taking steps to change the community. The others are still contemplating possibilities.
6. What is the SECOND example of Jonas "seeing beyond"?

Answer: seeing the faces in the Auditorium change

The Giver points out rightly to Jonas that the colors in people's cheeks aren't as vivid as other examples of the color red. This also introduces the fact that the community has gone to having only one race - Caucasian.
7. What was the only specific difference in rules between Rosemary and Jonas?

Answer: Rosemary was allowed to apply for release

Jonas was shocked to find out that Rosemary had been allowed to apply for release (she released herself). It was the Giver who informed Jonas that Rosemary's release was the reason why the rule had been changed.
8. What was Jonas' parents' reaction when Jonas asked them if they loved him?

Answer: They scolded him and told him to use more precise language.

When his father told him that "love" was meaningless, it caused Jonas to tell his first direct lie to them - he said that he understood why it was meaningless.
9. What is the only specific non-human land mammal that Jonas and Gabe see while traveling to Elsewhere?

Answer: deer

The deer is the only specific mammal identified. There is a description given of a non-specific animal, most likely a fox or squirrel. Our class loves to argue which one it probably was.
10. There are multiple interpretations for the ending of the book. Some people feel that Jonas, in fact, died as he reached the top of the hill/mountain. IF HE DIED, what would Elsewhere represent?

Answer: It could be compared to Heaven.

The flood of warm, joyous memories - including his favorite, of a family celebrating Christmas - can make sense of a very confusing ending (for some people).
