Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The book opens with Katniss Everdeen walking through the ruins of District 12. After she returned to District 13, the Capitol aired a broadcast of an interview between Caesar Flickerman and Peeta Mellark. After reliving the last night in the Quarter Quell, Peeta made a shocking statement regarding the war. He told Caesar, "If everybody doesn't lay down their weapons-and I mean, as in _________-it's all over, anyway." Fill in the missing phrase from Peeta's call for a ceasefire.

Answer: very soon

It is clear later in the story that Peeta, after being captured by the Capitol, was forced to call for a ceasefire. The Capitol tried to use him to get the rebels to lay down their arms in an effort to end, and in turn win, the war. They knew that Peeta's eloquence and ease of using words would sway people to the Capitol's side.

This brought controversy to District 13, as people labeled Peeta a traitor. Katniss stood firm in her belief that he had been tortured and brain-washed by President Snow.

This led her to make a bold request to the leaders of District 13 in exchange for her being the face of the rebellion.
2. Before Katniss agreed to be the Mockingjay, the symbol of the rebellion, she made a list of demands that she expected to be kept by District 13. One of them caused quite a stir in the command center: Peeta would be forgiven of all charges if the rebels won. When 13's president, Alma Coin, said no, Katniss lost her cool. "They'll (the victors) be granted _______!" What word finishes Katniss' sentence?

Answer: immunity

Katniss finished her fiery speech as she stood from her chair and shouted at the president. "You will personally pledge this in front of the entire population of District Thirteen and the remainder of Twelve. Soon. Today. It will be recorded for future generations. You will hold yourself and your government responsible for their safety, or you'll find yourself another Mockingjay!" Wow! Katniss clearly showed that she believed in who Peeta was and what he truly stood for despite his being tortured by the Capitol. Ultimately, Alma Coin agreed to Katniss' demands and publicly promised Peeta's immunity.

However, the president said (in her own way) that if Katniss steped out of line, she and all the victors from the Quarter Quell would lose their immunity after the war.
3. District 13 intended to use Katniss as merely a symbol of the rebellion, not to fight in major battles. Small ones here and there yes, but her more important task was to make public appearances to inspire the rebels. The first TV spot they recorded with Katniss involved her giving an inspiring line to the camera. It was a flop, as evidenced by Haymitch Abernathy saying this line while laughing: "And that my friends, is how a(n) _______ dies!" Finish his sentence.

Answer: revolution

Katniss was furious that Haymitch was still controlling aspects of her life. She was upset about how he had manipulated and used her in the arena for the rebellion and didn't tell her. Eventually she calmed down and was able to face Haymitch again in person. They apologized to each other for what they had done, both in the arena and after.
4. During the war with the Capitol, the rebels used different types of media exposure to sway undecided people to their side. Propaganda spots were used frequently by District 13. One of them was a "tribute to the tributes" called "We Remember". Fulvia Cardew came up with the idea and said, "I thought we might use ______ to intro and narrate the spots." Who did Fulvia want to narrate the "We Remember" promos?

Answer: Finnick

The rest of the rebel leaders agreed that the "We Remember" propaganda spots were a great idea. They also agreed that Finnick would be the perfect narrator. It turned out they were right. Finnick did a phenomenal job with the spots, especially the ones from District 4, like the tribute to his old mentor, Mags, who gave her life in the Quarter Quell.

After the arena, Finnick had fallen into a state of confusion, but the "We Remember" spots helped him to keep a grasp on reality.
5. After the rebels begin their TV spots, the Capitol continues to fight back with their own spots, usually using Peeta and his eloquence to sway others to their side. During one broadcast, Peeta comes to his tortured senses long enough to warn District 13 of an attack from the Capitol. In 13, people try to decipher what Peeta says, when Haymitch barks: "Shut up! It's not some big mystery! The boy's telling us we're about to be ______. Here. In Thirteen." Finish Haymitch's statement.

Answer: attacked

Haymitch looks to Katniss for help in convincing the rebels that Peeta is right about the attack. They both know Peeta better than anyone else and eventually convince District 13 to go into lockdown. President Coin initiates a Level Five security drill that drives everyone in the District deep into the underground caves.

As Katniss and Haymitch expect, Peeta's warning rings true, and just minutes after the last few citizens make it underground, the first missile rocks the District.
6. While in the bunker during the attack, Katniss worries about Peeta. Katniss tells Prim that she's worried that Snow will kill Peeta. Prim wisely says that if Snow kills him, he won't have anyone to use against Katniss. Katniss asks Prim what they will do to Peeta. Prim answers, "Whatever it takes to _______." What is the end of Prim's sentence?

Answer: break you

Despite only being 14, Primrose Everdeen is an extremely wise young woman. She tells Katniss that President Snow cannot kill Peeta, because Peeta is the only one within Snow's reach that Katniss actually cares about. This reminds Katniss of Johanna Mason, the Quarter Quell tribute from District 7. Johanna says in the arena that the Capitol cannot hurt her because there is no one left that she cares about. Katniss knows that Prim is right, and over the next couple days, it gives Katniss a small bit of comfort. Even with that, the question "What will break me?" is all that consumes Katniss' mind during the missile attacks.
7. Peeta is rescued from the Capitol by the rebels and in recovery, but Katniss feels that Peeta's former self can never come back to her. She tells the rebels to send her to the Capitol. The rebels say they must capture the districts first, so Katniss replies, "Fine, send me to ____." What district did the rebels send Katniss to?

Answer: Two

Plutarch Heavensbee tells Katniss that they must secure all the districts in the war before taking on the Capitol. He also tells Katniss that all the fighting is mostly over in all of the districts except District 2. Katniss tells the rebels to send her to District 2 because she feels that Peeta will never come back to her. Snow's torture mechanisms on Peeta cause him to forget who he truly cares about and who he loves.

He even believes that Katniss is one of the Capitol's mutts.
8. Katniss eventually makes it to the Capitol and leads a group of rebels, including Gale and Peeta, who continues to improve as time progresses. After several of their comrades sacrifice themselves so Katniss and the others can escape, Peeta tells Katniss to leave him because he says he's losing it. Katniss refuses to believe it, and kisses Peeta and tells him, "Don't let him take you from me...stay with me." What is Peeta's reply?

Answer: Always

Katniss knows if Peeta loses control, she really will have to kill him to survive, and that would mean that President Snow would win. Feeling that Snow has won too much in the past, she kisses Peeta until her need for oxygen forces her to stop. She tells Peeta, "Don't let him (President Snow) take you from me." After Peeta hesitates, still fighting the torturous memories, Katniss says, "Stay with me." Peeta fights a few seconds more before coming back to his normal senses, and tells Katniss, "Always." In the book "Catching Fire", Katniss tells Peeta at one point to stay with her, and he tells her the same thing.
9. Katniss and her team go into hiding in a local shop run by a former Hunger Games stylist. While attempting to sleep, Katniss overhears a conversation with Peeta and Gale. While discussing which of the two of them Katniss will choose when the war ends, Gale says, "Katniss will pick whoever she thinks she can't ______ without." Finish this line from Gale Hawthorne.

Answer: survive

Gale says, "Katniss will pick whoever she thinks she can't survive without." Katniss wonders if she really is cold enough to choose who would help her live longest. Unfortunately, she feels like Gale is right, which makes her feel bad that she is motivated by survival rather than compassion. Ultimately, Katniss does make her choice, but not based solely on survival, but also on compassion and emotional need.
10. After the war, Katniss kills Alma Coin when she realizes Coin is planning on doing the same thing Snow did during his reign. A trial is held, Katniss is acquitted and she and Haymitch head home to District 12. Later, Peeta is released from medical treatment. He tells Katniss what their doctor said. "By the way, he said to tell you he can't keep pretending he's treating you forever. You have to pick up the phone." Who is Katniss and Peeta's doctor?

Answer: Dr. Aurelius

Dr. Aurelius met Katniss after the rebels bombed the President's mansion, killing numerous children, including Katniss' sister Prim. He also became the main witness in Katniss' defense at the trial. He says during the trial that Katniss is nothing more than just a shell-shocked girl that didn't know what she was doing.

He also has them release Katniss into his care, albeit over the phone. Peeta is also treated by Dr. Aurelius until he goes back to District 12. Over time, Peta and Katniss grow back together, and fall in love all over again. Katniss makes her choice at the end of "Mockingjay" by saying to Peeta that she loves him.
