Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which former American First Lady published her memoirs entitled "Becoming" in 2018?

Answer: Michelle Obama

Obama's book was described as brutally honest and refreshing as she wrote of her time as the first African-American First Lady in the White House while also being a mother and fronting a public health campaign. The book covers her life from her upbringing on Chicago's South Side to what surely must be the pinnacle of a life in public, "Carpool Karaoke" with James Corden.
2. Which two-time Oscar-winning actress wrote the 2018 autobiography "In Pieces"?

Answer: Sally Field

Field won Best Actress Oscars in 1980 (Norma Rae) and 1985 (Places In The Heart) and of course is remembered for playing Mrs Gump in 1994's "Forrest Gump". Her 2018 memoir covers her life and career and took her over six years to write.
3. In Lily Allen's 2018 autobiography, "My Thoughts Exactly", she talks about her father's semi-abandonment of her, her mother's drug habit and the stability provided by which comedian, who was her mother's partner for five years?

Answer: Harry Enfield

Allen's father Keith left the family when she was 4 years old and saw Lily and her brother Alfie infrequently. When he did see them, he would often leave them in the company of staff at the Groucho Club, while he drank all day. Her mother, Alison Owen, started a relationship with Enfield but her work as a film producer took her abroad often, where she would regularly party and take drugs.

This behaviour eventually proved too much for Enfield and the relationship broke up. Enfield's characters Harry and Lulu from his TV shows are based partly on the antics of Lily and Alfie Allen.
4. "Brutally Honest" was the 2018 biography of which former Spice Girl?

Answer: Melanie Brown

This book by Scary Spice documents her life living in an abusive marriage and her descent, due to her circumstances, into a life of alcohol and cocaine. Refreshingly it also focuses on her escape from the relationship and her triumphant appearances as a judge on TV talent shows.

The book has won many plaudits for the honesty with which Brown documents her life and seeks to inspire women in such a situation to seek aid.
5. "Thanks A Lot Mr Kibblewhite" is the 2018 autobiography of Roger Daltrey, vocalist with The Who. Who is/was Mr. Kibblewhite?

Answer: Daltrey's headmaster

Daltrey was expelled from school at age 15 for a variety of misdemeanours and petty crimes. Mr Kibblewhite, the headmaster that expelled him, told Daltrey that he never amount to anything and this comment provided the catalyst for Daltrey to prove Mr Kibblewhite wrong. Now, of course, Daltrey is one of the most famous rock vocalists on the planet, even if the Who were described by Pete Townshend as, "three geniuses and a singer."
6. "No Spin" is the 2018 autobiography of Shane Warne. Which sport or activity was Warne a master of for 15 years?

Answer: Cricket

Warne was a renowned and much feared leg spin bowler for Australia, hence the book title. Even for a non-cricket fan, this book is a fascinating read, telling how Warne himself wasn't a cricket fan, preferring and almost making it as a professional in Aussie Rules football.
7. "We Are Displaced: My Journey and Stories from Refugee Girls Around the World" was the 2018 autobiography of which Pakistani author?

Answer: Malala

Malala was a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014, aged just 17, and has been called the most prominent citizen of Pakistan by former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi. The main focus of the book is Malala's own journey into becoming an Internally Displaced Person but also allows other girls with a similar life to tell their story. Malala now lives in Birmingham, England, as well as having honorary Canadian citizenship.
8. What is the title of Sir Michael Caine's 2018 memoir?

Answer: Blowing The Bloody Doors Off

"What's It All About?" and "The Elephant To Hollywood" are Caine's earlier autobiographies from 1992 and 2010 respectively. "Blowing the Bloody Doors Off: And Other Lessons in Life", to give the full title, is a companion piece to the first two books, and contains many funny anecdotes and inspiring stories. My favourite, concerning the "don't ever give up" theme, is when Caine recounts standing in a line for unemployment benefits with an equally young and broke Sean Connery.
9. What is the nationality of Terese Marie Mailhot, author of the incredible 2018 autobiography "Heart Berries"?

Answer: Canadian

Mailhot was born on the Seabird Island First Nation Indian reservation in British Columbia to abusive parents. She grew up in extreme poverty, was taken into care and married at age 19. By age 20, she had her first child, of whom she lost custody while giving birth to her second.

She was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, an eating disorder and bipolar II, and yet still managed to overcome all this to write a frank, painfully honest book that I hope you will look out for.
10. Categorised by the author as "a sortabiography", what is the title of Eric Idle's 2018 memoir?

Answer: Always Look On The Bright Side of Life

Of course, all are great and famous quotes from the Monty Python team, but "Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life" could be the only answer, taken from the song written by Idle for the movie "Life Of Brian" (1979). The song has become a British classic, sung often at the most inappropriate moments, such as by the crew of HMS Sheffield after the ship was severely damaged during the Falklands War, by football fans when their team is relegated, and it is also the most played song at UK funerals, as requested by the deceased of course.
