Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During the Prologue, Liza was dreaming her favorite dream. Who was with her in the dream?

Answer: Her dad

During the Prologue, Liza was only ten years old. She was dreaming her favorite dream, which was a memory of her and her dad on the beach. They got swept under the water and thrown onto the beach by a wave. Her dad had died within a year after the incident on the beach, and the dream was a reminder of how she felt safe in her dad's arms.

She woke from the dream to the sound of her step-dad yelling at her mom.
2. What did Celia's husband buy her for her birthday?

Answer: A house

Alex, Celia's husband, wanted to surprise her by buying the perfect house for her birthday. The house was located in Mendham and had plenty of land so that they could get a pony for Jack. The house was on Old Mill Lane and was actually the house that Liza Barton had grown up in, and it was the same house where she had accidentally killed her mother and had shot her step-father.
3. What was the name of the Nolans' busy-body neighbor?

Answer: Marcella Williams

Marcella Williams had been living in her house on Old Mill Lane for twenty-eight years and knew a lot about everything because she always made it a point to get the gossip. She just happened to 'be around' anytime something happened. She was also good friends with Ted Cartwright, Liza Barton's step-dad.

She would dress nice when she was to be seen and she was always trying to impress Ted.
4. Alex bought Jack a pony shortly after he bought the house. What name did Alex originally name the pony?

Answer: Lizzie

Jack wanted to name the pony Lizzie because that was the name on the lawn when they arrived at the house. Celia told him he could name the pony whatever he wanted, but she wanted him to change the pony's name to Star. After a time when she yelled at him and told him not to call the pony Lizzie, they decided that Star would be a good name. Alex explained to Jack that the little girl that used to live in the house was named Lizzie and that she had done something very bad.
5. Who was the reporter for the 'Star-Ledger' that found out about Celia Nolan's true identity?

Answer: Dru Perry

Dru Perry was well-known for her 'Story Behind the Story' series. She wanted to get the story on Liza Barton after the house on Old Mill Lane was vandalized. After she did some snooping, she discovered that Celia Nolan was actually Liza Barton. She told the prosecutor, Jeff MacKingsley, what she had discovered and that she thought that Liza was back to take revenge on those that had hurt her.
6. Who was Celia Nolan's lawyer?

Answer: Benjamin Fletcher

After Detective Walsh had been following her around and she realized that they might think that she was a suspect in some of the murders, she talked to her old therapist and asked for his advice. He suggested that she find Benjamin Fletcher, who had been the lawyer that got her acquitted for the murder of her mother and attempted murder of her step-father. Benjamin Fletcher was a very tall, balding man who was already past retirement age and Celia wasn't really fond of him.

She didn't even tell him that she was really Liza Barton, the little girl he had defended many years ago.

He had always believed her step-dad's version of the story until after he got to know her better as an adult and everything was revealed in the investigation of the recent murders.
7. Robin had dated Ted Cartwright a few times and several people thought that she was still seeing him, but she denied that they were involved. Who was she really dating?

Answer: Alex Nolan

Alex and Robin had been dating for over three years. They schemed together to take other people's money. Alex had married Celia to try and get all the money that her late husband had left for her and their son Jack. Celia had no idea that the Alex she knew was not the real Alex.

He was really a lawyer, but he was not very successful and the money he had was left over from his last money-making escapade with an elderly lady.
8. What was Celia Nolan's profession?

Answer: Interior designer

Before Celia married Alex and they moved to Mendham, she had a business as an interior designer in New York. She had been pretty successful and was planning to start working again once they got more settled. She even had a lady mention the great job that she had done for a friend of hers one day when she was having lunch.

It wasn't until the end of the book when she was married to Jeff MacKingsley that she started working again.
9. Georgette Grove owned eighty percent of her real estate business and the other twenty percent was owned by her partner. Who was her business partner?

Answer: Henry Paley

Henry Paley always had a thing for Georgette, but there wasn't anything going on between them. He owned twenty percent of the real estate business, but he hadn't been working hard for some time because he was ready to retire. He had made a deal with Ted Cartwright behind Georgette's back. If he could get Georgette to sell the property on Route 24, then Ted would give him one hundred thousand dollars. Ted wanted the property so that he could get the area rezoned to commercial, but Georgette was determined to stop that from happening.
10. Even though Celia already knew how to ride a horse, she decided to take riding lessons so that she could get close to someone who she thought might have answers about her dad's death. Who was her riding instructor?

Answer: Zach Willet

Zach Willet had been working for the Washington Valley Riding Club for years. He was giving Liza's dad, Will, riding lessons when Will died. Liza started to remember something that her mother had yelled at Ted the night that she died, and her mother had mentioned Zach. Zach had witnessed Ted kill Will Barton and he had been black-mailing Ted for twenty-seven years. Celia/Liza offered him one hundred thousand dollars if he would go to the police and tell the truth about what had happened to her father.

He had the evidence hidden in his house and the detectives were able to find it, even though he had already been killed.
