'One Golden Hour' by Maureen Reynolds Quiz

Tessa arrived in Harper City looking to escape a brutal man. What she discovered was a wonderful bounty of friends and love. This book was first published in 1988, and another of my teenage favorites.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which year did Miss Tessa Amesbury arrive from Boston to become Harper City's new school teacher?

Answer: 1877

The book began with Tessa's wagon ride into town with Hal Witherby. The trail was dusty and bumpy, and Tessa was wearing a wide straw hat to protect her face. We learned later the hat was more to hide behind, than to protect against the elements. Harper City, Kansas is a real town, but not actually named after the the main male character.

It was named after Sgt. Marion Harper. The town was named for him in 1863, after he died in a Civil War battle.
2. Though Tessa was unaware of this for a very long time, her love interest had a prestigious occupation in the town. What was Cody Butler's town status?

Answer: doctor

Upon witnessing Tessa's overall disdain for him, Cody happily kept his status from her. It seemed to become his own inside joke, as Tessa thought he was not much more than the average ruffian. The entire town referred to him as simply 'Cody', so it took her awhile to find out what he was. Cody also turned out to be the founder of Harper City, establishing the town with his family wealth. Cody had not planned to stay in Harper City as the doctor, but decided to do so after Dr. Rawlins passed away. All that happened before the novel began.
3. During her tenure as the local teacher, who did Tessa live with?

Answer: widow Rawlins

Audrey Rawlins, and her late husband Jake, knew Cody from Kentucky. She'd known him since he was a baby, and she claimed that was about 33 years so far. She was a delightful woman, and treated Tessa very kindly. She was also the one who revealed Tessa's first name to Cody, which Tessa hadn't wanted him to ever find out.
4. How did Cody make Tessa pay him back for destroying some of his lab equipment?

Answer: making him her own home-cooked dinner

I hope this gave a small hint to answering question two. Cody did not immediately reveal he was the doctor, even after he caught her in his lab. After he attended a dinner with Tessa, Audrey, and Eb at Mrs. Rawlins' home, he told her he wanted Tessa to cook her own dinner for him. She also had to eat the dinner in his company.
5. Tessa spent most of her young life in an orphanage in Boston.

Answer: True

The orphanage was the ultimate cause of her leaving Boston. She'd agreed to marry a wealthy man named William Forsythe, in order to erase her beloved orphanage's debt to him. She married him, but he beat her on their wedding night. She left town right afterward, the marriage not consummated.
6. With whom was Eb Taylor romantically involved?

Answer: Audrey Rawlins

Audrey, also know as "the widow Rawlins", met Eb at the weekly socials and had him over for dinner quite a bit. Eb owned the local general store, and had been widowed for 33 years. He and his adult son Mike both worked at the store.
7. Tessa was determined to win the trust of a young Indian girl named Smoke Eyes. What was Smoke Eyes' legal name?

Answer: Katherine Flynn

Smoke Eyes was thirteen and lived a couple of miles out of town with her grandfather. She'd been sneaking into the school house and stealing the students' learning supplies. Smoke Eyes' Irish father named her Katherine, but she did not like it at all. Fortunately for Tessa, Smoke Eyes was passionately interested in becoming a doctor some day.

This lead her into Tessa's classroom over the course of several months of coaxing.
8. Which man asked Tessa to marry him?

Answer: Ned Winston

Ned became instantly infatuated with Tessa. He was also a budding artist, and Tessa took the time to praise his artwork. Tessa turned down his proposal, citing a fiance in Boston. She'd also told Cody of this fictional fiance, trying to get him to leave her alone. Truthfully, Tessa was in love with Cody and married to William.
9. Which of Cody's many admirers made Tessa jealous?

Answer: Angie Foster

While the entire female population admired Cody, it was Angie that physically hung onto him at any occasion she could find. Cody had zero romantic interest in Angie, despite her beauty. Tessa's unassuming and frank nature appealed to Cody.
10. Which couple were married by the end of this romance novel?

Answer: All of these

Audrey finally had to propose to Eb herself, but they did become married. Audrey moved in with Eb, leaving Tessa her old house. After being denied by their hearts' desires, Angie and Ned ran off and married as well. Finally, Tessa and William were still married at the end of the novel. But, William had been jailed for the death of his first wife and Cody and Tessa engaged. William had beaten Tessa on their wedding night, when she explained to him she was not untouched.

She explained to William she'd been raped on her way home from the market at age fifteen.

When she'd told Cody this story, he'd been extremely kind to her.
