Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What event caused Jack to make the newspaper headlines?

Answer: subway massacre

A crazed man started shooting in a subway car, and Jack was the only armed person there who could stop him. Jack was angry that no one else stood up to the guy, because Jack knew that it would put him in the limelight. Sandy Palmer, a newspaper reporter who was also in the subway car, kept trying to write stories about Jack because he wanted to become famous.
2. Who was Jack surprised to find was his new client?

Answer: his sister

Jack was amazed to see that his new client was Kate, his sister whom he hadn't seen in 15 years. He was very happy to see her, but she wasn't quite as happy to see him. She had contacted Repairman Jack (not knowing that he was her brother) to help her find out what was going on with her partner, Jeanette.

However, Kate was reluctant to have Jack help her, because she was afraid he'd find out that she was gay.
3. When the story about the subway massacre was in the newspaper, someone recognized the description of the gun that Jack had used. Why did this man want to find Jack?

Answer: He wanted revenge for something that Jack had done to him.

Stan and Joe Kozlowski had been in the business of setting bombs for criminals who hired them. Jack had stopped them from completing what turned out to be their last job. He had then followed them to where they lived and found out where they stored all of their explosives, as well as their cash.

He had set fire to their house and barn, and Joe's hand had gotten severely burned while trying to save some of the cash. In addition, federal investigators had found out that the property had housed a bomb-making operation.

The Kozlowski brothers' reputation had been ruined, and no one hired them after that.
4. When Kate followed Jeanette to see what she was doing, what kind of group did she think that Jeanette had joined?

Answer: a prayer group

Kate saw a group of people sitting in chairs, holding hands, and chanting. Kate was relieved, because she thought that a prayer group was harmless, and that she and Jeanette would be able to salvage their relationship.
However, Jeanette was actually part of a group that had become infected with a virus that was taking over their minds. The group was called the Unity. They could read each other's minds and even take control of those who weren't fully integrated into the Unity yet. The purpose of the Unity was to take over all of civilization, making everyone part of one entity.
5. How did Kate become infected with the virus?

Answer: Her hand was punctured.

Kate was sleeping when she was woken up by a stabbing pain in her hand. She also felt as if she weren't alone. When she turned on her bedroom light, she saw that although no one was in the room with her, her bedroom door was open. Then she heard the sound of the study door closing and locking down the hall.

When Kate looked at her hand, she found a drop of blood coming from a puncture wound.
6. What kitchen appliance temporarily stopped the control of the Unity?

Answer: microwave oven

When Jeanette was using the microwave, her mind temporarily became her own again, and she begged Kate to help her.
Later, when Kate was infected, she and Jack were able to use the microwave oven to stop the Unity from knowing what they were discussing, as well as to stop Kate from trying to kill Jack.
7. By what name did the Unity call the eventual assimilation of all people into one entity?

Answer: Great Inevitability

The Unity had been working on adapting the virus to become air-borne, so that they could bring about the Great Inevitability more quickly.
8. A woman and a dog mysteriously appeared to both Kate and Jack.

Answer: True

A woman with a Russian accent, wearing a white cape, and with a big white dog, spoke to Kate outside of the house where she first saw Jeanette with the Unity. She told Kate that the group was not a religious group or a cult and that Kate must stop them "if you wish to save the loves of your life".

The same woman and dog appeared to Jack inside his apartment when he is very ill from fighting off the virus. She told Jack that both he and Kate were infected with the virus. She said that Jack was a warrior, and that he was the only one who could stop the virus. She also told Jack that she was his mother - not his "birth mother", but his "other mother".
9. How did Jack stop the Kozlowski brothers?

Answer: He blew up their car.

Jack found a bomb that they had planted on his car. He removed the bomb, and managed to plant it on their car while they were sitting in it, watching the apartment building. Stan realized what was going to happen just as Joe pressed the transmitter button to set off the bomb, but it was too late.
10. What happened to Kate at the end of the story?

Answer: She died.

Kate had brought a bomb with her when she'd gone to meet with the other members of the Unity. Jack got her out of the house in time, but after the explosion, she tried to find Jeanette. A propane tank that had been beside the house blew up, causing a piece of metal to lodge in her abdomen. Kate died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. Jack had found his sister after 15 years, only to lose her again.
