Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What item did Kusum Bahkti want Jack to retrieve for him?

Answer: a necklace

Kusum Bahkti told Jack that his grandmother had been mugged and was dying. The mugger had stolen a necklace that was very important to her, and Bahkti wanted her to have it back before she died.
2. What happened to Kusum Bahkti's grandmother when the necklace was given back to her?

Answer: She regained her youth.

Once the necklace was returned, Kusum Bahkti's grandmother regained her youth, and once again became the beautiful sister of Kusum. Since removing the necklace caused Kusum's sister, Kolabati, to age rapidly, the story that she was his grandmother rather than his sister had been concocted.
3. What did Nellie consume that contained the durba grass elixer?

Answer: chocolates

Nellie had received a box of chocolates which was supposedly from her nephew, Richard Westphalen. In reality, Kusum Bahkti had sent them, and had filled them with durba grass elixir, which helped the rakoshi to find their victims.
4. Besides restoring health and age, what other important function did the necklaces provide?

Answer: They made the wearers invisible to the rakoshi.

Although the necklaces didn't make the wearers invulnerable, they healed wounds quickly and slowed aging. Perhaps most importantly, they made the wearers invisible to the rakoshi, so the rakoshi wouldn't kill them.
5. How did Vicki ingest the durba grass elixir?

Answer: She ate part of a tainted orange.

Vicky had found two oranges in her playhouse. Jack only knew about one, which he threw away. Vicky had hidden one away, though, and she eventually ate the orange that had been filled with the durba grass elixir.
6. How did Jack kill the Mother Rakosh?

Answer: He set her on fire.

Jack tried many times to kill the Mother Rakosh, but she wouldn't die. He shot her, tricked her into falling off of the roof of his apartment building, and drove a flag pole through her chest. The Mother Rakosh kept coming after him, until he poured diesel fuel on the flagpole and on the Mother Rakosh.

When he lit the diesel fuel with his lighter, the Mother Rakosh was completely consumed by the flames, except for her teeth and her claws. Jack had remembered just in time that the only two things that could harm rakoshi were iron, which would weaken them, and fire, which would destroy them.
7. How did Jack destroy most of the other rakoshi?

Answer: He blew up the ship.

Jack had to use the flamethrower on some of the rakoshi while he was setting the bombs. However, most of the rakoshi died when the ship blew up. Only the rakosh called Scar-face escaped.
8. Scar-face killed Abe on the shore.

Answer: False

When the rakosh was going after him, Abe kept backing up until he fell off of the dock. The rakosh then turned on Gia and Vicky. They tried to get away from Scar-face by jumping into the truck, but the rakosh smashed the windshield and reached inside for Vicky. Before it could reach her, Jack jumped onto its back.

The rakosh threw Jack off, and in the process, it inflicted the scar that in subsequent books marks Jack as a part of the Otherness.
9. Why did Kusum Bahkti want the rakoshi to kill Grace, Nelly, and Vicky?

Answer: They were Westphalens.

Over a century before, Captain Sir Albert Westphalen had destroyed the temple of Kusum Bahkti's family, and stolen their jewels. Everyone in Bahkti's family had been killed, including his parents. Kusum had vowed to his older brother, as his brother was dying, that he would see to it that his mother's curse was carried out. Before she died, his mother, who was the high priestess of the temple, had cursed Captain Westphalen, saying that "his line would end in blood and pain at the hands of the rakoshi."
10. Why was it so important to Kusum Bahkti that his vow be carried out?

Answer: He thought that it would cleanse his karma.

Kusum Bahkti felt that he had soiled his karma by sleeping with his sister. He believed that by making sure that the vow was carried out, his karma would be cleansed.
