Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does Kate suggest Thomas use for his new focus?

Answer: her wedding ring

A magical focus needs to be something non-obtrusive, and easy to have with you. Thomas wants Kate to choose his new focus. She suggests her wedding ring, because it is likely to be always near Thomas, but more misleading to a bad magician looking for Thomas's focus.
2. What was in the mysterious package that was delivered to Lady Sylvia?

Answer: Saint Ampoule chrism

The Saint Ampoule chrism was once used to anoint kings of France. Apparently, Lady Sylvia is a member of the League of the Pimpernel and she is given the chrism to keep it safe. Unfortunately, it is stolen by highway robbers.
3. How did members of the League of the Pimpernel communicate?

Answer: knitting

The knitting is done very specifically to send messages. It looks like it has a lot of mistakes, but this is done deliberately. Also, things like feathers and sticks are knitted in, each representing something or someone.
4. What is the name of the young man whom Mr. Strangle is escorting through Europe?

Answer: Theodore Daventer

James and Cecy run into Theodore Cavalier at many of the antiquities that they visit, all over Europe. In Paris, Thomas recognizes Theodore's escort as Mr. Strangle, a one-time accomplice of Sir Hilary.
5. What mode of transportation is used to cross the Alps?

Answer: mules

The track is very narrow and it is cold, but the party rides on mules over the treacherous pass, with all of their baggage strapped to other mules. Kate is miserable and cold the whole trip.
6. Does Kate fall into a canal in Venice?

Answer: yes

Kate is known for her clumsiness. Before leaving for Europe, Thomas talks of his delight in watching Kate fall into a canal in Venice. Unfortunately, he is not there to see it and is somewhat put out.
7. Why did Cecy's first attempt to create a focus fail?

Answer: too much water in Venice

In fact, her magic goes into the desk and causes it to shatter. Cecy finds out later that the reason the spell went wrong was because the water all over Venice tends to make magic go awry. Cecy is relieved to learn this because she knew she had done the spell correctly.
8. Who is found dead in a fountain in Venice?

Answer: Mr. Strangle

Mr. Strangle shows up at the Capodoro luncheon and is confronted by Thomas. Later, he is found stabbed in the back and floating in a public fountain. Sir Hilary is found dead in a hotel room in Paris. Cavalier Pescara died of natural causes before the story started. Count di Capodoro does not die in the book.
9. Who made up the spell to create an Emperor of Europe?

Answer: Cavalier Coducci

Cavalier Coducci and his partner Cavalier Pescara came up with the spell as a means to defeat Napoleon. When he was defeated anyway, they abandoned the spell. When Cavalier Pescara died, his notes were sold to Count di Capodoro and his wife uses them to try and rule all of Europe.
10. Who melted the snow over the Apennines?

Answer: Thomas

Thomas uses a spell to melt the snow, because they have to get to Rome quickly and sea travel makes Cecy too ill. Of course, the spell nearly drains Thomas, but Cecy is able to help out with the minor spells.
11. Which two characters were captured by the Contessa di Capodoro?

Answer: Cecelia and Thomas

Thomas and Cecy try to disrupt the final ritual, but Contessa di Capodoro had altered the ceremonies, so she could invoke even older magic. She is able to capture Thomas and Cecy when they are hiding to find out the further plans.
12. Near what town was the final confrontation?

Answer: Nemi

There is an old wood near the estate of the Contessa di Capodoro near the town of Nemi. Rome is where the final ritual was originally supposed to take place. Venice is no good, because magic does not work there, because of the water. Nice is a town in France and was not visited in this book.
13. Who sent Kate the beautiful, charmed pink shawl?

Answer: Aunt Charlotte

Kate had assumed the shawl came from Lady Sylvia, but on the same day she receives a note saying Lady Sylvia had merely forwarded the package, she also receives a letter from Aunt Charlotte chastising Kate for not thanking her for the gift. Kate had not received a note in the parcel, so did not know whom to thank until she receives Aunt Charlotte's rebuke.
14. Who of the four main characters is not found to be magical by the end of the book?

Answer: James

Thomas has always been magical and Cecy started to learn magic in "Cecelia and Sorcery or The Enchanted Chocolate Pot". She practices her magic a lot in "The Grand Tour or the Purloined Coronation Regalia". At the end, Kate learns that she has some magical ability and must learn to use it. James is never shown to have any magic at all.
15. Which city was NOT visited in the book "Grand Tour"?

Answer: Vienna

There is talk of visiting Vienna and Thomas plans to go there after they leave Rome, but they do not actually go there in this book.
