Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Prologue: The book opened with an excerpt from whose letter?

Answer: Brother Lucien

The excerpt is a conversation between Brother Lucien and Sir Thomas Malory. Malory said that if he didn't mention the good deeds of Mordred, they would soon be forgotten.
2. Chapter One: What was Alayna's husband's name?

Answer: Toland

Her parents had been against their marriage, but Alayna had loved him enough to give up her comfortable life as Sir Guy's daughter. When Toland died, Galen had come, unexpected and unsummoned, following a premonition that something was wrong.
3. Chapter Two: Whose horse did Alayna borrow to ride to Camelot for help?

Answer: Croswell

Croswell's horse wasn't much good, however. It collapsed shortly into the trip and refused to get back up until Alayna had walked too far to go back to it, then it got back up and trotted back home.
4. Chapter Three: Who was the second person Alayna met on her way to Camelot?

Answer: Mordred

The first person she met was a knight who mistook her for a beggar. Determined for that not to happen again, Alayna waited until the subsequent knight was abreast of her, before jumping out of hiding and grabbing the horse's bridle. Unfortunately, that knight was Mordred, who wasn't a good horseman, and he fell off, putting him in an irritable mood.
5. Chapter Four: Which knight was constantly questioning and interrupting Alayna at the council?

Answer: Sir Lambert

Finally, after Sir Lambert had asked over half a dozen questions without letting Alayna answer any of them, Mordred finally asked him testily, "Will you give Lady Alayna a chance to answer any one of your questions, or must she wait until you have asked all first, then answer the sum of them at the end?" Several of the other knights found this funny, but it did quiet Sir Lambert for a time, though unfortunately not long enough.
6. Chapter Five: Which knight supported Alayna's decision to ride with the rescuers?

Answer: Percival

Actually, Alayna hadn't meant for any of them to even hear it, but when she brought it up to Galen and Mordred, Percival, who was walking with the king, happened to hear and paused to listen. When he stopped, King Arthur stopped to see why Percival had stopped, and that left the rest of the knights to either leave the room in front of their king or be privy to Alayna and Galen arguing.
7. Chapter Six: According to Galen, what had Mordred 'been advocating'?

Answer: Slash and maim

Galen and Mordred had long-standing differences in the area of chivalry: Galen lived by it and Mordred found it worse than useless.
8. Chapter Seven: Who killed Sir Denis, Halbert's seneschal?

Answer: Alayna

Prior to Sir Denis, Alayna had never killed anyone, never, in fact, wielded a sword since she was twelve.
9. Chapter Eight: Who shot Galen?

Answer: Barth

When this happened, it was Alayna who somehow ended up in charge, with Galen bleeding on the ground and Mordred--for all his bravado--bewildered and unsure of what to do, so noticeably so that Galen even commented on it. Mordred told Galen to stay calm and Galen replied that, "I am doing fine. I'll be up as soon as I catch my breath. You're the one who is falling to pieces."
10. Chapter Nine: Where was Keira being held?

Answer: Bel Bois

It was owned by Sir Edgar and his cousin, Sir Osric. It wasn't very far from Castle Burrstone; Halbert said they could reach Bel Bois in only a few hours.
11. Chapter Ten: "Halbert said, with obvious enjoyment, 'Didn't your mother teach you anything?'" What was Mordred's reply to this barb?

Answer: "Celtic, of course. A little German."

Mordred had been needling Halbert since they joined company, and the wizard was more than happy to find an occasion when he could return Mordred the favor. Mordred at first feigned ignorance as to the subject, magic, then finally said that his mother was not one to share an advantage.
12. Chapter Eleven: When Mordred and Galen were fighting in Bel Bois, what does Mordred fall from?

Answer: He fell from the top of the stairs

Alayna watched, horrified, as he fell nearly twelve feet. He injured his sword arm and could only clumsily defend himself with his other, so Alayna stepped in, taking his place while Mordred held Keira to keep her from running into the midst of the battle.
13. The Legend of King Arthur According to Sir Malory: What happened to Guinevere at the end of the tale?

Answer: She became a nun

She lived in a convent at Amesbury.
14. The Legend of King Arthur According to Sir Malory: Nimue once warned Arthur of a cloak sent by the king's half-sister. What happened to the wearer of the cloak?

Answer: He would burst into flame and be reduced to ashes

It is interesting that, despite the fact that in Malory's version of the story Nimue imprisoned Merlin, she was still welcome at King Arthur's court.
15. The Legend of King Arthur According to Sir Malory: What happened to Lancelot at the end of the tale?

Answer: He took vows of priesthood

Lancelot had hastened back to England to help King Arthur against Mordred, but unfortunately arrived too late. I hope you enjoyed my quiz. Please rate my quiz (quiz makers always appreciate it when you rate a quiz) and feel free to send me feedback. Cheers!
