Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Moonraker", 007 has dinner with 'M' in Blades before unmasking Drax as a card cheat. During the dinner, Bond does something strange to one of his drinks. What is it?

Answer: He sprinkles black pepper into his pre-war Wolfschmidt vodka

Bond explains that sprinkling pepper into vodka is a habit he acquired in Moscow, as it takes the fusel oil from badly distilled vodka to the bottom of the glass. He apologises to 'M' for insulting the club's prize Rigan Wolfschmidt.
2. Before his first encounter with Auric Goldfinger, Bond is taken to dinner in Miami by his client, Mr DuPont, and eats stone crabs with melted butter and toast, washed down with iced pink champagne. At which restaurant did he enjoy this luxurious meal?

Answer: Bill's on the Beach

Joe's Stone Crab, a Miami institution, is commonly considered to have been the model for Bill's on the Beach.
3. Three measures of Gordon's gin, one measure of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake until ice cold, pour into a deep champagne goblet and finish with a large thin slice of lemon peel. What name did 007 give to this cocktail that he invented in "Casino Royale"?

Answer: The Vesper

The cocktail was named after Bond's fellow MI6 agent and lover, Vesper Lynd, because once tasted, he didn't want anything else...until she betrayed him, having been blackmailed by the Russians.

If you want to try this drink, use dry vermouth in place of Kina Lillet, which is no longer available. Enjoy!
4. After being released from Shrublands in "Thunderball", 007 takes Patricia Fearing to Lucian's in Brighton before seducing her on the Downs. What did he eat at Lucian's?

Answer: Spaghetti bolognese and Chianti

Bond seduced Miss Fearing in her bubble car - the mind boggles at the contortions needed to achieve this.
5. In "Live and Let Die", Bond dines with Felix Leiter at Ma Frazier's in Harlem whilst investigating Mr Big. They ate Little Neck clams and Fried Chicken Maryland. On which street was Ma Frazier's?

Answer: 7th Avenue

"Live and let Die" was published in 1954. Consequently, 7th Avenue is still referred to as 7th Avenue in Harlem in the book. Many street names in Harlem were renamed to honour prominent African-Americans after the successes of the civil rights movement in the 1960s. Today, 7th Avenue in Harlem is called Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Boulevard, in honour of the first African-American elected to Congress from New York.
6. In which of the following junk food options has Bond been known to indulge?

Answer: Doner kebab

In "From Russia with Love", Bond has lunch with the Head of Section T, Kerim Bey. Kerim recommends the doner kebab, commenting that it has "lots of onions in it". No mention is made of chili sauce.
7. At which of the following famous New York restaurants do we know 007 has dined?

Answer: The 21 Club

Bond dines with Tiffany Case at the 21 Club in "Diamonds are Forever". They eat caviar and lamb cutlets with asparagus and mousseline sauce. On the same trip, he lunchs at Sardi's, another well-known NYC restaurant.
8. In "Diamonds are Forever", Bond explains to Tiffany Case his idea of the perfect woman. What is it that she must be able to do?

Answer: Make sauce Bearnaise as well as love

Clearly, James Bond is no feminist.
9. In which Bond novel does our hero order dinner as follows: "...a very small tournedos, underdone, with sauce Bearnaise and a coeur d'artichaut. While Mademoiselle is enjoying the strawberries, I will have half an avocado pear with a little French dressing."?

Answer: Casino Royale

Bond orders both for himself and Vesper Lynd at dinner in Royale-les-Eaux. Fleming created the name Vesper Lynd as a word play on West Berlin. Say them both out loud to get the idea. Like the city of Berlin in the Cold War era, Vesper's loyalties were also divided - an MI6 agent, she was also a KGB double agent.
10. Bond is a heavy drinker. Which of the following drinks does Bond consume in the Fleming novels?

Answer: All of these

Bond drinks vodka martinis frequently, drinks the Piesporter Goldtropfchen Moselle wine with Goldfinger in the eponymous book and drinks I.W. Harper with Marc-Ange Draco in "On Her Majesty's Secret Service".
