"The Pelican Brief" by John Grisham book 1/52 Quiz

I made a bet with my mom that I could read 52 books in a year. Maybe not one a week; just be done one year from 5/11/2005. If I win I get $1 for each book and dinner. Let's see if I make it. I will write a quiz as I finish a book.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My name is Darby Shaw and I am a second year law student. I am 2nd in my class, and work my butt off. This year I started a relationship with one of my professors, Thomas Callahan. He teaches a class that every law student dreads to take, but, since he is teaching it and he seems to relate to us students more than the typical professor, students are happy to get into his 11:00 class. By the way, I am headed there right now. What class am I going to?

Answer: Constitutional Law

You guessed it, I am headed off to Constitutional Law. This is the most unpopular, but required course at Tulane. However, Thomas has a cool brilliance about him making the class interesting. Students fought to sit in Callahan's 11:00 con law class, three times a week.
2. I woke up early this warm, muggy, October morning, I never sleep more than 6 hours. I climb down Thomas' stairs to brew some coffee, while he sleeps off the Scotch he drank last night. I turn on the news to catch the President talking about the death of Justice Abraham Rosenberg, the most hated man in the States. I was in such shock, I forgot what channel I watched this Special Report on. Do you remember?

Answer: NBC

Thanks, NBC; it is all coming back to me. The NBC reporter on the front lawn of the White House, letting us know the police were not talking, the FBI was supposed to be protecting the Justices, and there were no suspects as to who killed him, or why.
3. I have a theory, I know it is a long shot. I have been working non-stop on my theory for 3 days, skipping class and not seeing Thomas. It is Saturday night; after barricading myself in the law school library, I am finally home. I am thinking about discarding it (my brief), when there is a knock at the door. It is Thomas, he says he has a pizza with shrimp tails, eggs and craw fish. These are not really the toppings. What kind of pizza did my sweetie bring me?

Answer: sausage and peppers

Man, you're good, you should think about law school with a memory like that. Sausage and peppers, with a little wine to drink. After seeing Thomas, I decided that before I discarded my thin little brief, he should read it. After all, I spent so much time researching it. After a night together, Thomas takes the brief home with him to read.
4. My little brief that I thought was really not a big deal, a waste of time, must make a little sense. Thomas seems to think I have something. As matter of fact, he is visiting his friend Gavin Verheek, he wants to have him read it. Gavin even takes interest in my brief and hands it off to the next guy, causing a chain reaction. Verheek gives the brief to his secretary; who does he want her to give it to?

Answer: Eric East

Giving Eric East the brief is the worst thing Verheek could have done. Eric, Voyles and Lewis, were meeting with The President and Coal to update on their findings on the deaths of the two Justices. During this meeting my brief was turned over to them. That is when the killings began...
5. I woke up this morning, the scent of Thomas' cologne filled the room as he slept. It made me think of my father. I used to raid his closets and wear his flannels. He never would mind, as long as I put them back, clean and ironed. My father died in a plane crash that killed 20 people. If my dad were still alive, what would be the age difference between him and Thomas?

Answer: My dad would be four years older

If my dad were still living, he would be four years older than Thomas. My brother and I were really close to my father. He was the glue that held our family together. After he died, my mother remarried and my brother moved to Germany. We rarely talk anymore. His death tore our family in different directions.
6. I feel so guilty; tonight Thomas and I got into the worse argument ever, and now he is dead. He drank so much, I did not want him to drive. That is how the argument started, his drinking. If only he wouldn't have gotten into that car, he would be alive. The explosion knocked me off my feet, causing me to hit my head. I must have been knocked out for a moment. Next thing I know, this cop named Rupert is trying to stand me up and get me into a car, to ask me questions. I hear sirens, I wake and Rupert the cop is gone. None of these other cops know him. What was he wearing? I need to give them a description, so they can find him.

Answer: baseball cap, black and gold Saints jersey

I'm kinda dizzy, I think I fractured my skull. My memory is kind of cloudy because of the head injury, thanks for reminding me. I should have known that Rupert wasn't a cop. What cop would be wearing a Saints jersey and a baseball cap. I must have really be out of it to believe him. I could've been killed also, if it weren't for those sirens.
7. I had to call Gavin Verheek and tell him about Thomas' death. It had to be related to the brief. I also needed to find out how many people he showed the brief to since he received it. I don't understand, Thomas just gave him the brief Monday and last night at 10 pm he was murdered. What day of the week did Thomas die?

Answer: Wednesday

It is just devastating, 48 hours after Thomas gave Gavin the brief. Gavin promises he will talk to Director Voyles, to find out what is going on with the "pelican brief", and for protection so I don't get killed.
8. I am hiding out on the 15th floor of the Marriot. I just cut my thick, dark red hair. The last time my hair was cut was also by me, when I was three; my mother whipped my bottom. Tonight, it took two hours to cut my hair with dull scissors. Now I need to change its color for the first time. What color do I dye my hair?

Answer: black

I thought about bleaching it blonde, but that is what they would expect. I spent two hours dying it black. What the heck, they have so many bottles at the drug store of different colors, I could change it daily if I wanted to.
9. I really want the floppy disc from my apartment; it has all the information of the brief on it. I can't go there, they are watching for me. They do not know my best friend Allison Stark, so I send her to my apartment. She asks my landlord Mrs. Chun if anyone has been in the apartment. She says she hasn't seen anyone. Once Allison gets into the apartment, she knows someone has been there. Is this scenario true or false?

Answer: false

It is false, I send my friend ALICE Stark, and she has my landlady Mrs. CHEN let her in. But, everything else is correct, I just got the names wrong. Must have been the head injury. However, the floppies were missing. I had to go by memory on what I have written on the brief.
10. Gavin is in New Orleans looking for me. I call him, and he asks if I know who is after me. I tell him that I have seen them, some of them were even at Thomas' memorial service yesterday. One walked into the service for about 10 minutes, then stepped out and talked to this character I have become familiar with. Who did the man talk to when he came out of the service?

Answer: Stump

I sat across the street hidden in a window, watching the service take place. I wish I could grieve for Thomas, but I can't. Every time I turn around someone is there. I am not sure how long I will be running; hopefully I don't die first.
11. Oh no, I can't get away from these guys. Stump is closing in on me. I run into crowd of football players and fans. I start to yell "Help me! That man is after me! He wants to rape me!" it works. Three football players step in front of him. Stump takes out two of the men immediately; however, the third takes him down. Did you get the name of the football player who took him down? I would like to thank him someday.

Answer: Benjamin Chop

After Mr Chop took him down, player number two was then involved in the attack. Someone shouted "Cops!" The crowd separated. This yell saved Stump's life. I was able to get away, I hid in the corner of a dark bar, hoping to be safe as I ate a plate of boiled shrimp.
12. My second phone conversation with Gray Grantham, a journalist for the Washington Post. "I'm scared", I tell him. They are trying to kill me. I need his help. He agrees. After I hang up with him, he goes to his editor with what he knows about my brief. Who is the editor he goes to?

Answer: Smith Keen

Grantham went to Smith Keen with the information he had. Keen said he could go ahead with the research on the story. He had to update him every hour. Grantham needed more information, and proof, to print a story in the paper.
13. Thomas' friend Gavin still wants to help me. I am tired of New Orleans, and I am scared. Gavin works for the FBI; he can get me help and protection. I agreed to meet him, but how would I recognize him? What did he say he would be wearing?

Answer: black sweatshirt, red cap, folded newspaper

I agreed to meet him; he was wearing a black sweatshirt, red cap, holding a folded newspaper. Little did I know when I joined up with this guy that he was not Gavin. Gavin was dead, I was with his killer. As we boarded a boat the man I was with was shot in the head. With the commotion around me, I was able to escape. Again.
14. I am outta here. I contact Gray, give him instructions where to meet me. Everyone is dying because of the brief. I give him instructions that will hopefully save his life. If they know he has been talking to me, he is a dead man. Where do we meet for the first time?

Answer: New York

I am very specific, I tell him to take a flight to LaGuardia. Then he is to take a cab to the Vista Hotel in the World Trade Center. Once there, to go into the bar and have a couple of drinks, wait an hour. He was then to take a cab. There was more, but I don't have time to get into that now. I gotta run.
15. I explain everything that I have written in the brief to Gray. He takes it all in. This is exciting for him, it will make a great story. Who is implicated as the main culprit in my brief?

Answer: Mattiece

The person I think is behind all of it is Mattiece. The murders, everything. I really can't say much more now, I don't know you and I am risking my life just by telling you this.
16. I can't believe this guy. After I got through telling him everything, while he recorded it, he says "What happened to your hair?" What the heck is he talking about, how does he know what my hair looked like before? I ask Gray how he knows about my hair. You know what - the jerk had pictures taken. Do you know how many pictures he had?

Answer: 3

He had three pictures - two yearbook pictures from Tulane, one from Arizona State. I wanted to know where he got them, and I asked him not to snoop. He said he had contacts and dropped it there. I was fuming.
17. I call Gray from a cafe in Manhattan; he wants me to go to DC. I feel safer here, I am not sure if I want to go to DC. I head into the cafe for a bagel. Just as I thought I was feeling safe, I glance out the window. Guess who I see?

Answer: Stump

I see Stump. I am sure he didn't see me, but I no longer feel safe. Those football players really did a number on him, now Stump is walking with a limp. I need to leave town. Maybe Gray is right, I would be safer in DC.
18. When I get to DC, I call Gray to let him know I am here. I do not want him to use his car or stay in his apartment, it is dangerous for both of us. I give him instructions again, he needs to rent a car and stay somewhere else. I can't risk him being followed. Where did I tell him to stay?

Answer: Marbury Hotel

I told him to stay at the Marbury Hotel and not to leave. He did not listen to me, and he left to meet with Keen. It so happens Keen's car was bugged and they found out where Gray was staying. When he returned to the room, the maid thought he had just left. He had been gone for a few hours. Luckily, he had no information in the room, about me or the brief.
19. There is this man who goes by the name of Garcia, who tells Gray he knows something, but he is afraid to talk. Gray used a tracking system on his phone to locate the payphone Garcia was calling from. He then sent one of his "contacts" to take pictures of this guy. If we can find Garcia, we can hopefully get the rest of the information we need to put the bad guys behind bars. We have an idea what law firm he works for, but getting his real name is becoming a task. We decide the easiest way to go about this is to the Law School and talk to the students that interned at his firm, to see if they recognize his picture. I seem to have lost the piece of paper that I wrote the name of the University down on. Do your remember - what school do a majority of these interns attend?

Answer: Georgetown

We spent most of the day at Georgetown Law School; nobody there knew who Garcia was.
20. One of the last people we need to talk to is in a detox center, his name is Edward Linney. Hopefully he can identify Garcia from the photo. Gray and I get to the the detox center. Gray asks to speak to Edward, but the nurse and the doctor both tell him he is not allowed visitors. I sneak down the hallway to Edward's room; the room number was mentioned. Can you help me out a bit and tell me what room number is Edward in?

Answer: 22

I knock on room 22 and meet Edward Linney. He recognizes the picture. When I left his room, I was stopped by a security guard asking who I was. I told him I was Edward's sister, and Edward went along with my story. Gray and I made it out of there with the information we needed. Gracia's real name.
21. Gray and I head over to the Law Offices of White and Blazevich, to talk to the man we know is Garcia. He works in the Oil and Gas division. I approached the the receptionist and ask for "Garcia", she asks who I am, I tell her I am Dorothy Blythe and have an appointment. She is shocked that I am asking. Then she tells me "Garcia" is dead. What is Garcia's real name?

Answer: Curtis Morgan

I am told that Curtis Morgan was killed in a mugging. Peggy (the receptionist), calls Jarreld Schwabe, a man in a cheap suit claiming to be a partner with the firm. He asks me to leave and they call security. Curtis did not die in a mugging. They figured out he knew too much and killed him.
22. Gray talked to "Garcia's" wife; she wanted to talk a lot. He was getting annoyed, but then figured she was getting at something so he listened. She hints that he may some information hidden. She gives him a key to a lock box where he may have information on what he knows. I am sent into the bank to impersonate "Garcia's" wife, to get access to the box. What bank is the lockbox at - she mentioned two, I am not sure which one?

Answer: First Columbia

Beverly Morgan said that their account at First Hamilton had been frozen because of Curtis' death. When she gives Gray the lockbox key, we are not sure if the lockbox located at First Columbia is known by anyone and frozen also. Luckily it is not, I get in it and discover a notarized letter and a video tape.
23. In viewing the tape made by "Garcia", he implicates the same person I implicated in my brief. He also points fingers at a few members at the law firm also. He has proof. There is a date on the bottom of the screen of when he made this tape. What is the date?

Answer: October 12

The tape is dated October 12. Curtis took the day off to take care of loose ends. He had a signed affidavit of the information he found in the office. He is sitting at his kitchen table telling everything he knows. He assumed correctly when he said "if you are watching this I am probably dead."
