Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Blood Brothers"- Which selection below is NOT correct about the events in the first novel?

Answer: The boys re-activated the evil presence on their thirteenth birthday

Caleb Hawkins (Cal to his friends) and his family were direct descendants of the town's original inhabitants. He and his friends Fox and Gage were all born on the same date, July 7th, 1977, within hours of each other. They later learned they were ALL direct descendants of the town's founding families. Cal told Quinn that he and the other men had been friends since "the womb".

When the soon-to-be ten year old boys traveled alone to the Pagan Stone on the eve of their birthday, they smoked cigarettes and shared three beers. Right before midnight the boys decided to become blood brothers, and each one shallowly sliced open his wrist.

When they joined their blood together, they opened the door on a malevolent presence that had been waiting to be freed.

Then that summer (1987), and every seventh summer afterward, the townsfolk faced a spiritual plague that lasted for seven days.
2. "Blood Brothers"- Who came to Hawkins Hollow to write a book about the town's supernatural history?

Answer: Quinn Black

Quinn was a successful writer of supernatural history when she arrived in town. She was drawn to the town because of its story, but was immediately rewarded/cursed with proof her ties went deeper than the obvious. She and Cal were immediately drawn to one another, though Cal and Fox were understandably wary of sharing facts with her.

The three incorrect choices are characters from Stephen King (Susan), MaryJanice Davidson (Betsy), and Charlaine Harris (Sookie). Susan was the teacher turned vampire in "Salem's Lot".
3. "Blood Brothers"- Another young woman was drawn to town based on the power of her dreams. Before Quinn knew her real name, how did she refer to Layla Darnell?

Answer: Miss Fabulous Red Bag

Quinn first noticed Layla's stylish red hand bag as Layla was checking into the hotel. The ladies became very acquainted the next evening in the hotel dining room. Quinn was just about to order when Layla walked in, bringing with her the town's famous red eyed demon child (also known as Twisse) in the form of a four foot slug-like creature.

When she realized she and Layla were the only two people to actually see the repulsive specter, Quinn grabbed Layla by the arm and escorted her rapidly into her car.

They headed to Caleb's home, where he and Fox were eating chicken and discussing how much to reveal to Quinn before Gage came home.
4. "Blood Brothers"- What near fatal occurrence did Cybil and Gage experience when both they first met, and first arrived, in Hawkins Hollow?

Answer: car accident

Cybil was on her way to town on Quinn's invite. She and Quinn had been friends since the first day of college and now worked hand in hand in the investigation and publication of famous haunts. Gage was the last of the three men to make an appearance in the book, as he had been in Europe locating the identity of their evil entity.

He was racing into town in his fancy sports car, and Cybil was experiencing an unusual bout of zero sense of direction. The mysterious Ann Hawkins, no doubt, had arranged the pair to meet outside of the group first. Our six main characters were set at last. Quinn and Caleb would spend book one discovering their love, Fox and Layla would find their love in book two, and Gage and Cybil would be last.

This is the Nora Roberts trilogy way.
5. "The Hollow"- Early into book two, Fox and Layla shared a dream. What was true about the dream?

Answer: All of these are true

Layla was the descendant of Hester Deale, the sixteen year old girl raped by Twisse hundreds of years earlier. Twisse forced Hester to accuse Giles Dent of her rape, and people believed him to be the father of the daughter she bore. Hester was racked by grief and guilt and wanted to end her life and that of her child.

In the end, as felt by Layla, she couldn't kill the baby. So, Hester loaded herself down with rocks and drowned herself in what was to become known as Hester's pool. In their shared dream, Fox was caught in Hester's thrall and she (and Layla) drowned him as well.

In the dream, though Fox knew it was Hester, she appeared to him as Layla. It was time for the pair to begin to practice joining their minds.
6. "The Hollow"- In the pursuit of finding out where Ann Hawkins had lived around the time of her sons' birth, the gang discovered all but which of these?

Answer: her real name was Willow Rosenberg

Ann had given birth at what was to become the O'Dell farm. She'd stayed with her cousins, delivered her three sons, and returned to Hawkins Hollow a couple of years later. Quinn and Cybil had discovered the name of this location, Hollow Creek, but had been delayed in relaying the info due to Layla's encounter with a demony snake at the law office. When it was finally revealed to the group, Fox immediately came back with the information that his family owned Hollow Creek and its surrounding acreage. Soon afterward, the six pack began investigating the place in search of Ann's missing diaries. While there, Quinn tranced and revealed more of Ann's story. It was of a time Ann wrote in her diary. Her babies were eight months old, and Quinn was able to communicate this moment in time during a 20 minute trance. She was too wiped out to work further that day. So, they decided to return in a couple of days, while Fox's parents were out of the house.

Willow Rosenberg was the best friend of Buffy Summers on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer".
7. "The Hollow"- Right after they located Ann's missing diaries on the O'Dell farm, who read them aloud to the group?

Answer: Quinn

Though it wasn't all revealed immediately, some of the early readings told of Giles' destiny as the guardian of the gods. He was reincarnated into human form again and again, as was Ann. Later, Ann wrote of the night at the Pagan Stone. She wasn't there, as Giles had sent her away to live with her cousin and birth her triplets. During her labor, she witnessed Giles and the sacrifice of innocents under Twisse's control.

His blood, Twisse's blood, and the blood of the innocents bound Twisse for three hundred years, to wait the time of the six people who could end Twisse forever. Ann was forced to wait until the new year to write of that night, as that would help keep back the dark forces.

The written word had much power in giving life to what it spoke of, and Ann promised to wait.

The three men and three women were getting impatient for action, Gage the most restless of them all.
8. "The Hollow"- What was the name of Fox's first love, who'd fallen victim to Twisse during the previous summer of seven?

Answer: Carly

Carly and Fox were 23 years old and had been sharing an apartment in another town. When Fox's duty called him home, he lied to Carly about the reasons. It wasn't until she came to Hawkins Hollow that he told her the real story. Carly, being a woman of science, didn't believe Fox and asked that he seek help.

When things became extremely violent in town, Carly promised Fox she wouldn't leave the farm. The O'Dell farm was the location of Ann Hawkins' salvation and had never fallen prey during the violence of the summers of seven. Carly didn't keep her promise, and it led to Twisse making her commit suicide. Fox had been torn up about the death of his first love every since that time. One night he dreamed of her again, and this time the memory was twisted with his new love Layla.

The trauma of that experience dampened Fox for a while, but when he received some wonderful family news, his spirits reemerged.
9. "The Hollow"- As the book was winding down, Twisse unleashed a six part reign of terror. Which choice does NOT correctly match the person and their own hellish experience?

Answer: Fox experienced a Utopia like town, but no one knew him

What actually happened to Fox, and he was the first to feel the effects, was spiders coming out of his keyboard and biting him. He could see and feel them as they attacked. He ran from his office in search of a way to clear his mind, and he kept reminding himself that none of it was real.

The earlier idea to use Fox and Layla's ability as a psychic bat signal worked as well. He could hear Layla screaming and sense the other four's distress. Quinn had gone for a power run and ice cream when she found herself basically running in place.

She couldn't ever move forward. It was Fox who rescued her, and then Cal appeared after experiencing the town in post apocalyptic form.
10. "The Hollow"- At the end of book two, was the bloodstone reformed into one piece?

Answer: Yes

Our six pack performed a blood ritual. They traveled to the Pagan Stone at a special decided upon moment, and formed a sacred circle. Each one bled into a bowl and recited an incantation. This brought forth a terrific rage from the still bound Twisse, and he tried to prevent the magicks from taking place.

The group stayed strong and finished it. When they were done, and the smoke had cleared, the stone was no longer in three pieces. And, fortunately, the men still appeared to have their special healing powers intact.
11. "The Pagan Stone"- When Gage went to the cemetery in book three, did the demon visit him there?

Answer: Yes

Gage decided to visit the grave containing his mother and baby sister. The demon appeared to him in the appearance of his mother. Initially Gage believed it to be his mom, but realized it was Twisse when it began urging him to leave town. Cybil concluded that the tactic offered evidence that the demon was nervous.

Instead of trying to kill Gage, it instead wanted him to selfishly leave town and "save himself". The demon knew that it would take all three men to save the town, and probably all three of its own lineage in the form of the women.

The experience prompted Gage to seek out his surrogate mothers, Frannie Hawkins and Joanne Barry.
12. "The Pagan Stone"- Of the six, who was the last to be visited by the ghost of Ann Hawkins?

Answer: Cybil

Gage was the last of the men, and Cybil the last of the women. After Gage recounted his visit to Layla and Fox, he mentioned Cybil would probably be irritated that she was the last to be visited. What Cybil did in fact say, was that she was a "little put out" to be the last.

It wasn't long later she was facing her first real test. A neighborhood dog came to Cal's place and attacked her and Gage. She was forced to shoot the demon infected beast to save him, and had a minor breakdown afterward. Cybil finally received her visit from Ann after Gage was bitten by the demon. Ann came while Gage slept and hinted to Cybil that the attack had given them a new weapon. Cybil figured out quickly that Gage now contained an immunity in his blood to the demon's infectious bite.
13. "The Pagan Stone"- After learning that Quinn and Cybil would be investing in her new boutique, what name did Layla decide on for her business?

Answer: Sisters

The investment left Layla only needing to borrow a third of her previous loan amount. She was touched and grateful that her new friends wanted to invest in her future, and promised they'd all three be legal owners of Sisters. The ladies later found out that was the same building in which Gage's mom had suffered a tragic event in her second pregnancy that led to the death of her and his baby sister. Gage assured the women it wouldn't cause him pain if the building was theirs to reuse.
14. "The Pagan Stone"- Who was the first of the women to find out she was pregnant?

Answer: Quinn

Gage and Cybil had seen Quinn fully pregnant when they joined and looked into the future. On another attempt to see, they'd witnessed Fox and Layla inside Sisters and Layla was pregnant. Only, on that attempt, Cybil was the only one of them to notice it and later forced Layla to take a pregnancy test. Putting all the pieces together, Layla and Quinn forced Cybil to take a test shortly thereafter. Though Cybil couldn't fathom it being true, she too was pregnant. That made their blood link nine strong when they faced the demon at the Pagan Stone. And, like the Ann's triplet sons and the guys' mothers later, they were to have three babies together.
15. "The Pagan Stone"- Which character was called on to offer his/her life in willing sacrifice so that Giles Dent could defeat the demon Twisse once and for all?

Answer: Gage

Gage, Fox, and Cal were all the direct descendants of Giles Dent and Ann Hawkins. Layla, Quinn, and Cybil were all the direct descendants of Hester Deale. Hester had been raped and impregnated by Twisse in the 1600s, during the time Ann Hawkins was carrying Giles' triplets.

The six pairs joining and creating three blended bloodlines gave them all extreme power over Twisse, but there was one last aspect required for Giles Dent to come back and end it. Gage had to, and easily chose to, sacrifice himself willingly for the better of all in the hollow. Once inside the beast with the bloodstone, Giles took Gage's hand and they forced the bloodstone inside the heart of the beast. Giles told Gage that it was never about death for him, and Gage realized it was about being okay to die.

His free will opened the gateway for Giles to return and end the beast's reign of terror. Just before Gage came back, they all caught a glimpse of Giles and Ann together again and then presumably lived happily ever after...
