Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This manga features a character named Hideki who moves to Toyko to attend prep school to prepare for college. While there, he finds a personal computer robot called a persocom in the garbage. Her names is Chi. What manga am I reading?

Answer: Chobits

The "Chobits" manga was released in 2000 and ran until 2002 for a total of 8 novels. The anime series, which ran for 26 episodes, was released in the same year as the last novel's release. Like the series "Angelic Layer", "Chobits" explores the inter-relationships between robots and humans.
2. I am reading the manga "One Piece". In it, the main protagonist Luffy ate a fruit that gave his body rubber-like qualities, allowing him to stretch to incredible lengths and absorb heavy blows to the body with minimal harm. What fruit did Luffy eat?

Answer: Gum-Gum fruit

"One Piece" tells the story of Luffy, a young pirate boy who longs to control a large pirate treasure called the One Piece and become the leader of all pirates. The "One Piece" manga has been running since mid-1997 and 79 volumes of the popular series were released in its first 20 years. The anime began airing in 1999 and has produced over 700 episodes.
3. Now I'm reading a manga about a group of ridiculously strong fighters called the Z warriors. It's called "Dragon Ball Z". It has also been turned into a popular anime TV series. Who was the creator of this manga?

Answer: Akira Toriyama

The "Dragon Ball" universe itself revolves around the main protagonist Goku, a fighter of the Saiyan race, as he grows up from a young boy to later become the savior of Earth on several different occasions. In 2015, a new anime series that takes place after the Buu Saga began airing in Japan, called "Dragon Ball Super".
4. The next manga that I am reading tells of the arrival of a new teacher, who happens to be half alien and half human, and one of her students who suffers from a mysterious disease that knocks him unconscious whenever he feels stressed or overwhelmed. He calls them "stand stills". At one point, he was out for 3 years, making him 18 as opposed to the 15 he claims to be. In a twisted turn of the events, this boy and the new teacher marry each other. What manga am I reading now?

Answer: Please Teacher

The "Please Teacher" manga ran for only two novels from 2002 to 2003. However, a subsequent light novel was released in March 2003 and tells a little more of the story of Kei and Mizuho's story that wasn't shown in the manga or anime. The anime itself ran for 12 episodes and one OVA. One sequel, "Please Twins", and spin-off, "Waiting in the Summer", were released later.
5. Next, I'm reading one of my favorite mangas of all time. This one centers on a high school student named Light who comes into possession of a notebook that allows him to kill anyone he wishes, as long as he knows their name and face. His greatest rival is known simply as L, whom Light longs to kill in order to create a better world. Which manga is this?

Answer: Death Note

"Death Note" ran for a total of 13 mangas, a 37 episode anime series, and 3 live action movies. In 2015, an 11 episode live action TV drama was released in Japan and also released with English subtitles.
6. Another of my favorite mangas is "Sailor Moon". In this manga, a group of superhero girls called the Sailor Scouts fight various evil groups that are threatening to destroy or control Earth. True or false: the scouts are named after star constellations.

Answer: False

The original manga featured scouts named after planets and other objects in our solar system. After the release of the manga, the "Sailor Moon" anime series was released. Following it, "Sailor Moon R", "S", and "Super S" were released and dubbed in English.

The fifth series, "Sailor Moon Stars", was released in Japan but only released as a subtitled version in the United States. To honor the 25th anniversary, the original "Sailor Moon" manga was re-released as well as a new anime, "Sailor Moon Crystal", which is a retelling of the original series through the "Sailor Moon R" story-arc.

In 2016, "Sailor Moon Crystal" began airing episodes in Japan centered around the "Sailor Moon S" storyline.
7. The next manga that I'm wanting to read is about a girl named Tohru Honda, a girl who moves in with a couple of guys who are part of a large family that harbor a deep secret: whenever they are hugged by someone of the opposite sex, they turn into one of the twelve zodiac animals (plus a "missing" zodiac animal, the cat). What manga am I about to read?

Answer: Fruits Basket

In the beginning of the series, Tohru is found living in a tent in the middle of the woods due to renovation at the house of her grandfather, with whom she is currently living (her mother having died before the series begins). When Yuki, whose zodiac animal is the rat, finds out, she invites her to stay with him and his brother, Shigure.

The "Fruits Basket" manga was written by Natsuki Takaya and originally published in the United States by Tokyopop. The series ran from July 1998 to November 2006 for a total of 23 volumes. The anime series was ran throughout 2001 and had a total of 26 episodes.
8. Now I'm reading a rather odd manga which was also turned into a short anime series. This particular manga features a main female character, weilding a bass guitar as a main weapon of choice, who teams up with a young boy to take on giant robots, a large robotic hand, and a company whose main factory looks like a giant clothing iron. Which of these is it?

Answer: Fooly Cooly (FLCL)

The "Fooly Cooly" manga was comprised of only 2 volumes, while the novel series ran for 3. The anime series has a total of 6 episodes. The soundtrack, which is almost entirely comprised of songs by the popular Japanese band The Pillows, featured hit songs such as "Little Busters", "Runners High", and "Ride On Shooting Star". All of these songs were released by The Pillows on other studio albums.

"Fooly Cooly" is probably one of the goofiest series ever to be released. The main female, Haruko (who is arguably both a protagonist and antagonist), wields a bass as her weapon of choice and is frequently seen tuning and playing it (albeit poorly).
9. A friend recommended to me a great manga titled "Inuyasha", a story of a girl who travels back through time to aid a half-demon named Inuyasha. True or false: Inuyasha wields a giant sword which he calls Sesshomaru.

Answer: False

The sword is called the Tessaiga. Sesshomaru was the name of Inuyasha's half brother, who is a full demon, which Inuyasha longs to become.

Inuyasha's main goal in the series is to become a full -ledged demon. In order to do so, he needs the Shikon Jewel, a mystical necklace that will grant him his full demon power. It isn't until he meets Kagome, the series' main female protagonist, that he begins to change his evil ways.
10. This last manga I am reading is another oddball, but a good one, nonetheless. It is called "Midori Days". In it, a young girl, Midori, is somehow transformed onto the body of our main male character, Seiji. What part of Seiji's body was turned into Midori?

Answer: Right hand

Seiji's nickname is the "man with the Demon right-hand", as he loves to fight and usually wins. However, this becomes complicated when Midori, a young girl who is in love with Seiji, suddenly becomes an appendage on his body: his right hand. During the series, you find out that Midori is in a coma and transforms into his right hand as a way to be closer to him.
