Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Alexandra Spofford, Jane Smart and Sukie Rougement are collectively known as which group of witches?

Answer: The Witches of Eastwick

"The Witches of Eastwick" is a 1984 John Updike novel, which tells of three women who acquire their powers after leaving, or being left by, their husbands.
Into their lives comes Daryl Van Horne, a devilish man, who seduces them and then betrays them by marrying their young friend, Jenny. A film version in 1987 starred Cher, Susan Sarandon, Michelle Pfeiffer and a wonderfully cast Jack Nicholson.
2. "Dime Store Magic" and its sequel "Industrial Magic" are stories with which witch as the main character?

Answer: Paige Winterbourne

Written by Canadian author Kelly Armstrong, these books are set in a supernatural world that is very real and believable. Unlike other books with similar settings, in this world witches and sorcerers are enemies, not natural allies. Paige Winterbourne is the daughter of a deceased witch and coven leader, and is under constant pressure from the elders of the coven to do things "properly".

This means not drawing attention to the coven and doing things the way they have always been done. Something Paige seems unable to do.
3. In "Good Omens: the Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch" what is the name of Agnes Nutter's descendant?

Answer: Anathema Device

This 1990 collaboration between Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman is about the birth of the Antichrist, the end of the world, and the efforts of the representatives on earth of both God and Satan to prevent this, because they have become very comfortable with life exactly the way it is. To do this they need Agnes Nutter's book of prophecies, the only remaining copy of which is in the possession of her descendant, Anathema Device.
4. What is the name of the spirit to whom the Mayfair witches are connected?

Answer: Lasher

Anne Rice's series of books looking at the lives of the Mayfair Witches and their connection to the spirit Lasher spans several generations. Suzanne Mayfair is the first to wake the spirit of Lasher, and he promises the Mayfair family power and wealth in return for finding a way to make him flesh and blood again. "The Witching Hour", published in 1990, recounts the entire family history, and is followed by "Lasher" in 1993 and "Taltos" in 1994. Although those are the only three books completely devoted to the Mayfair witches the plot line and story does continue in other novels, especially "Blood Canticle".
5. She was guardian to a line of hidden kings, called her father "Old Wolf" and numbered Duchess of Erat amongst her many titles. Who was she?

Answer: Polgara the Sorceress

Polgara first appears in "The Belgariad", by David and Leigh Eddings, as the aunt of Garion, who is actually Belgarion the rightful King of Riva. Her whole story is told in "Polgara the Sorceress", published in 1997, which chronicles her life from birth as one of twin girls, her difficult relationship with her father, Belgarath, her love for her sister, Beldaran, and her recognition and acceptance of her magical powers.

Her story ends with her marriage to Durnik and the birth of her own twin children.
6. I was usurped by my brother and, with my daughter, exiled to an island far away from humanity. Who am I?

Answer: Prospero

The main character in Shakespeare's "The Tempest", Prospero is the rightful Duke of Milan who has been sent into exile with his daughter. Aided, or sometimes hindered, by Ariel and Caliban, the only two native inhabitants of the island, Prospero practices and perfects the dark arts. The whole play is set on Prospero's island.
7. I am Witch, and if live through childhood and come into my full powers I will be the Queen of the Darkness. Which book(s) do I appear in?

Answer: Blood Jewel Trilogy

Jaenelle Angelline is the main character in Anne Bishop's "Blood Jewel Trilogy"
She is destined to become the most powerful witch known, but to fulfill her destiny she has to overcome plots against her and grow into adulthood. Saetan, High Lord of Hell, becomes her surrogate father and protector, but she is safe only in Hell itself, where she refuses to stay,
8. I am both wizard and private detective. My peers don't completely trust me so The White Council keep me under observation in case I go over to the dark side. Who am I?

Answer: Harry Dresden

Created by Jim Butcher, Harry Dresden is the only person in Chicago with an entry in the phone book under "Wizards". He finds things and people that are lost, and is a consultant on paranormal crime to the local Police Department.
After the death of his mother Harry was adopted by a White Council mage, who turned to the dark side. Eventually Harry had to kill him to save himself. The White Council ruled the killing self defense but they don't trust Harry, mainly because of his complete lack of respect for their authority, and keep him under observation.
9. "The Crucible" by Arthur Miller, covers which historic event?

Answer: The Salem Witch Trials

Written in the early 1950s "The Crucible" takes place in Salem Massachusetts and looks at the events during the Salem witch trials. During this unsavoury episode in history this New England town and surrounding area was gripped with a sort of mass religious hysteria, started by a group of young girls claiming that they had been bewitched, which led to over 150 people being accused of witchcraft.

Many were found guilty, there were several executions, and it has been suggested that many old grudges were settled. Due to the period in which it was written the book has been held up as an analogy for the McCarthy era.
10. I am known as the Good Witch of the South, and since a house fell on my rival, the Wicked Witch of the East, I am the only witch left in my country. What is my name?

Answer: Glinda

In Frank L Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz", Glinda is described as "a beautiful young woman with long, rich red hair, blue eyes, and wearing a white dress". She overthrew the (former) Wicked Witch of the South, and is very protective of her subjects.

In the 1939 movie, she is described as the Good Witch of the North. In the books, however, it is Locasta Tattypoo who is the Good Witch of the North, and who welcomes Dorothy to Oz then directs her to go see the Wizard for help. Only when the Wizard has failed her does Dorothy seek out Glinda, who is able to help her get home again.
