Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Boa Hancock is renowned in the "One Piece" world for her powers, her attitude and her beauty. In her introductory scene, what did she do to the unfortunate Marines who were looking at her?

Answer: She turned them into stone.

Upon her introduction, Hancock showed why she is notorious in the "One Piece" world. After she shockingly kicked a kitten and proceeded to make selfish demands from the Marine Vice Admiral who had summoned her, she proclaimed: "The world will never cease to forgive my actions! Why, you ask? Why, it is because I am... beautiful!". Hancock then demonstrated the powers of her Devil Fruit by turning the Marines (all but the Vice Admiral) opposite her to stone.

Despite the cruel and selfish behavior she exhibited in her introduction, Hancock later showed a softer side when it came to those she cared about.
2. Boa Hancock is one of the Shichibukai (aka Seven Warlords of the Sea), the seven pirates sanctioned by the World Government. How many Beli (monetary unit in the "One Piece" world) was her bounty before she joined the Shichibukai?

Answer: 80,000,000

Hancock became the empress of the Kuja tribe when she was eighteen years old. After only one campaign, she earned herself an 80,000,000 Beli bounty. The World Government recognized her potential, and invited her to the ranks of the Shichibukai. Hancock accepted the invitation and joined the Shichibukai, thereby adding her considerable strength and fame to that of the World Government.

In return, she formed a treaty with the World Government which would prevent them from entering Amazon Lily (the home of the Kuja tribe) without permission, and would sanction all pirate activities by the Kuja tribe.

As it happens with all Shichibukai, Hancock's bounty was also annulled.
3. What is the name of Hancock's Devil Fruit?

Answer: Mero Mero no Mi (Love-Love Fruit)

The Mero Mero no Mi is a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allows the user to turn others into stone when they are overtaken by emotions of love or lust. The effects of the fruit's powers can be blocked if the target is overtaken by another emotion, as shown by Vice Admiral Momonga, who focused on the pain of his injured hand. Boa Hancock has shown mastery over Mero Mero no Mi's powers, using a range of attacks to petrify various people.

Her signature attack is Mero Mero Mellow (Love-Love Beam), for which Hancock forms a heart with her hands and releases a beam that can petrify its targets. Like with most Devil Fruits, Mero Mero no Mi's name is a result of onomatopoeia.

In this case, it comes from the sound for "to fall down drunk", which may also be used for feelings such as falling in love.
4. Boa Hancock possesses Conqueror's Haki (aka Haoshoku Haki).

Answer: True

Haki (it literally means 'Ambition', but is sometimes translated as 'Will') is an advanced ability in the world of "One Piece". There are three different kinds of Haki. Observation Haki (aka Kenbunshoku Haki or Mantra) is the ability to anticipate attacks, Armament Haki (aka Busoshoku Haki) is the ability to strengthen one's attacks or defense, while Conqueror's Haki (aka Haoshoku Haki) is the ability to knock out opponents with weak wills. Conqueror's Haki is the rarest form, and cannot be obtained through training. Boa Hancock is the first (and as of chapter 602, the only) female character to possess it.

She has also been shown to be extremely proficient in the use of Armament Haki.
5. Boa Hancock has a symbol on her back which resembles the hoof of a dragon. Why does she hide that symbol?

Answer: It is a mark that she was once enslaved by the World Nobles (aka Tenryuubito).

When Hancock was younger, she and her two sisters were captured by slave traders and sold to World Nobles. The World Nobles branded them with "The Hoof of the Soaring Dragon", the symbol they mark all their slaves with. Four years later, Hancock and her sisters escaped when Fisher Tiger stormed Mariejois, the stronghold of the World Nobles.

They were able to return to their homeland, Amazon Lily, with the help of Silvers Rayleigh, Shakuyaku and Elder Nyon. Hancock and her sisters knew that if anyone saw the symbols on their backs, they would realize the three of them had been slaves of the World Nobles.

Not wanting to live with that shame, when they returned to Amazon Lily they made sure no one saw the marks and came up with a story about the symbols being cursed and making anyone who sees them get petrified.
6. Boa Hancock has two younger sisters. What is the nickname they share?

Answer: The Gorgon Sisters

Hancock's sisters are named Boa Sandersonia (the middle sister) and Boa Marigold (the youngest). They are both Devil Fruit users like Hancock, although the abilities they gained from their fruits are very different to Hancock's. Sandersonia's fruit is the Hebi Hebi no Mi, Model: Anaconda (Snake-Snake Fruit, Anaconda Model) and Marigold's fruit is the Hebi Hebi no Mi, Model: King Cobra (Snake-Snake Fruit, King Cobra Model), which give them the ability to transform into the corresponding snakes.

After their escape from the World Nobles and their return to Amazon Lily, the three sisters wanted to keep their slave marks a secret, so they made up a story about slaying a monster called Gorgon (mythical monster that can petrify) and receiving the symbols as a curse. They spread the rumor that anyone who saw the symbols on their backs would be turned into stone, and exploited Hancock's ability (petrifying people overtaken by love or lust) to enforce that rumor. This led to their collective nickname, the Gorgon Sisters.
7. Each member of the Kuja tribe has a pet snake called Snake Weapon. What is the name of Hancock's snake?

Answer: Salome

The Snake Weapons are pet snakes owned by members of the Kuja tribe. The snakes are usually wrapped loosely around the bodies of the Kuja members who own them, however they take the shape of a bow when the Kuja want to fire an arrow. Each Kuja seems to have formed a personal relationship with their snake, and sometimes the snake takes a special form to accommodate the needs of their owner, e.g. Elder Nyon's snake often takes the shape of a staff to help her walk.

Salome appears to be unique among Snake Weapons. Its body is considerably longer than those of other Snake Weapons, and since Hancock doesn't use arrows, it has never taken the form of a bow. However, Salome often coils itself so that Hancock uses it as a throne to sit on. Salome is close to Hancock, and was worried about her when she became sick. Snake Princess (Hebihime) is the way the Kuja address Hancock, rather than her snake's name.
8. Boa Hancock shows great dislike and contempt for most men. Luffy, the protagonist of "One Piece", is a notable exception to this rule. What caused Hancock to change her opinion about Luffy and befriend him?

Answer: He covered her sister's back and protected their secret.

During their first meeting, Luffy saw the symbol on Hancock's back, so she attempted to petrify him. Due to his naïve and carefree nature, however, he wasn't interested in her beauty and remained unaffected by her powers. Enraged, Hancock ordered his arrest and execution. Later, when Luffy was fighting against Hancock's sisters in the arena, Sandersonia's clothes caught on fire. Luffy jumped on her back to cover the symbol, thereby protecting the sisters' secret. Hancock stopped the fight and afterwards revealed to Luffy the truth about the symbols and the sisters' enslavement to the World Nobles. Luffy, who already had a run-in with the World Nobles, did not laugh or show any contempt for her past enslavement. Hancock became friends with Luffy and even developed loving feelings for him (although they are depicted in a comedic manner).

The only other men she has shown some appreciation for are Rayleigh (who helped her get back to her homeland), Jinbe and Trafalgar Law (both of whom saved Luffy's life).
9. During the war at Marineford, the Shichibukai gathered to help the Marines fight against the Whitebeard Pirates. What did Hancock do during the fight?

Answer: She attacked indiscriminately both the Whitebeard Pirates and the Marines.

Hancock was initially uninterested in the upcoming war and refused to comply with the World Government's request, even though that meant she would lose her position in the Shichibukai. Eventually she agreed to help, but only because she wanted to help Luffy reach his brother. During the war at Marineford, her role was to help in the fight against the Whitebeard Pirates. Hancock, however, attacked indiscriminately anyone who tried to hit her (Whitebeard Pirates) or Luffy (Marines).

When some Marines questioned her actions, Hancock replied that she had agreed only to fight against the Whitebeard Pirates, not become allies with the Marines.
10. Most characters in "One Piece" have at least one running joke about them. One of the running jokes about Hancock is that when she shows contempt towards others, she looks down on them so much that she actually looks up. True or false?

Answer: True

The Pirate Empress is very arrogant towards people she scorns (most commonly men affected by her beauty), so when she looks down on (feels contempt towards) them, she literally tilts her head backwards and looks up. Another running joke that involves Hancock is the effect of her good looks on other people.

When she does something that would usually cause outrage, such as kick a small animal or demand from people to hand over their cargo, most people seem to forgive her or run to obey her. Hancock herself is the target of another running gag. Even though she is usually arrogant and takes advantage of people, she feels love for Luffy and becomes shy when talking to him, despite his naïve nature making him mostly oblivious to her feelings.
