Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Macbeth is worried that this man's heirs may take the throne of Scotland and hence has him murdered. His ghost appears later in the play. Who is this man, the father of Fleance?

Answer: Banquo

Banquo and Macbeth both meet the Three Witches, where Banquo learns that his heirs will be future kings of Scotland. Macbeth is so concerned that he sends men to kill both Banquo and his son, Fleance. Banquo is killed but creates a sufficient diversion for Fleance to escape. Banquo's ghost appears during a banquet and is a device to explore Macbeth's reaction to (and guilt for) his own actions.
2. This man called Christmas "humbug" and was visited by his long dead business partner, Jacob Marley, and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come. Who was this embittered character who, after these experiences, becomes a new and better man overnight?

Answer: Ebenezer Scrooge

Charles Dickens published 'A Christmas Carol' in 1843, to great public and critical acclaim. It has been suggested that the redemption of the miserable Scrooge reflects Dickens' tortured relationship with his father, who was imprisoned in Marshalsea Debtors' Prison in 1824.

The tale of hope for the poor may have resulted from Dickens' continuing theme of the privations of the underprivileged.
3. The ghost, Sir Nicholas de Mimsy Porpington, was a frequent and unremarkable sight around Hogwarts School of Magic. What was his more informal and commonly used name?

Answer: Nearly Headless Nick

Nearly Headless Nick is the Gryffindor House ghost, created by J.K. Rowling in her phenomenally successful "Harry Potter" novels. Nick's head was almost severed in an encounter with Lady Grieve.
4. Henry James wrote this ghost story in 1898. A governess looks after a young boy and girl after the death of their parents. Evil past events are hinted at and finally the ghost of Quint appears. What is the name of this book that might have carpenters interested too?

Answer: The Turn of the Screw

Reading this book you're never sure whether the ghost is real or a figment of the Governess's imagination. The mood is sinister and the reader learns of shocking events that have affected past and present characters.
5. Most ghosts are portrayed as frightening and fearsome. But not this 'friendly' ghost found in a story book and then on TV and in the movies! Who was this amiable apparition?

Answer: Casper

Casper first appeared in a 1939 children's story written by Seymour Reit and illustrated by Joe Oriolo. The first cartoon featuring Casper was released by Paramount Pictures in 1945. Casper first appeared in the progenitor of Harvey Comics in 1949. Since these early days, Casper has been seen in numerous cartoons, comics and even movies.
6. "Ali the Cairene and the Haunted House in Baghdad" is one of the stories in a large collection often referred to as "Arabian Nights". The house is haunted by jinns, supernatural creatures in Arab folklore. Which legendary Persian Queen was the reputed teller of all of these tales?

Answer: Scheherazade

Scheherazade was a fictitious amalgam of several important characters in Persian history, including Queen Hormay. Scheherazade told these stories to amuse and enthrall King Shahryar, who ordered the beheading of each of his previous wives after only one day.

She always left a story at a very exciting moment so that she would live to the next night to continue the tale. The stories were derived from Persian stories called the "Thousand Myths".
7. "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" written by Washington Irving describes a headless horseman pursuing a frightened school teacher near Tarry Town in the Hudson Valley. Who was this unfortunate teacher who mysteriously disappeared?

Answer: Ichabod Crane

The Headless Horseman story, set at the end of the 18th century, was supposedly of a Hessian Soldier in this region of New York with heavy Dutch settlement. His head was removed by a cannon ball during the American Revolution. Tarry Town is unsurprisingly equated with mid-Hudson Tarrytown.

This short story has been adapted into movies and on television many times since Venturini's 1922 silent movie version, starring Will Rogers.
8. The imagery is dark and foreboding. Mr Lockwood is awoken by a branch rapping on the window in the wind... "knocking my knuckles through the glass, and stretching an arm out to seize the importunate branch; instead of which, my fingers closed on the fingers of a little, ice-cold hand!" It was Catherine's ghost! He then sought out Heathcliff. Which Bronte sister wrote this famous gothic novel (her only novel)?

Answer: Emily

"Wuthering Heights", set on the Yorkshire Moors, tells the story of Heathcliff from a young boy until his death in his late thirties. It is both a love story and also a tale of revenge as Heathcliff exacts retribution on the two families for the loss of the love of his life.
9. The Otis family moves to Canterville Chase. None believe in ghosts yet they soon meet Sir Simon, the resident ghost who wants to frighten them. The daughter Virginia eventually befriends the ghost and helps him find peace. Which Irish author and poet, with a famous wit, wrote "The Canterville Ghost"?

Answer: Oscar Wilde

Although there are many comedic moments in this story, the underlying themes are the importance of love, forgiveness and the meaning of life and death. Virginia forgave Sir Simon for his wickedness which allowed him to finally be reunited with his dearly loved wife, Lady Eleanor de Canterville. Wilde also used this short story to contrast traditional English behavior and mannerisms with those of America.
10. A ghost makes four appearances in another Shakespeare play, "Hamlet". On one occasion, the ghost beckons Prince Hamlet to follow him, which he does to the alarm of his friends. The ghost then tells the prince of his horrific time in purgatory. Who was this ghost, who had earlier slain the Norwegian king in hand to hand combat? Perhaps filial loyalty made Prince Hamlet follow the ghost...

Answer: His father, King Hamlet

The ghost of King Hamlet tells his son that he'd been murdered by his brother Claudius, who poured poison into his ear. The Prince was then asked to avenge his father. The ghost then forces the Prince's friends to help with the revenge plan. Claudius learns of the plan and tries to have Price Hamlet killed. Hamlet escapes and in the harrowing final scenes he kills Claudius but suffers fatal wounds in a battle with Laertes.
