Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the last name of the three orphans?

Answer: Baudelaire

Emily Browning plays Violet Baudelaire, Liam Aiken plays Klaus Baudelaire, and twin sisters Kara and Shelby Hoffman play Sunny Baudelaire. The three children tragically lose their parents in a fire, and are shuffled from guardian to guardian throughout the movie.
2. What item does Sunny find to use as a pot, while the children are making pasta puttanesca?

Answer: A spittoon

After realizing what it is, Violet says they'll wash the spittoon twice. In addition to using the spittoon as a pot, the kids also use a window screen as a strainer, to drain the water from the spittoon.
3. Not counting Olaf himself, how many members make up his theater troupe?

Answer: Five

The troupe consists of two white-faced women (Jennifer Coolidge and Jane Adams), a person of indeterminate gender (Craig Ferguson), a bald, heavyset man (Luis Guzman), and a hook-handed man (Jamie Harris). They are first introduced to the children when Violet and Klaus are washing the floor of Olaf's (Jim Carrey) living room.
4. What type of sanctuary do the children build for themselves in Olaf's attic?

Answer: A tent

The children also display the shadow picture of their parents in the sanctuary, which they build after Count Olaf locks them in the attic. He is disappointed that they did not make roast beef for dinner.
5. After Uncle Monty is discovered dead, which one of these characters befriends the Incredibly Deadly Viper in the Reptile Room?

Answer: Sunny

Stephano (Count Olaf in disguise) is the one who kills Uncle Monty (Billy Connolly), after injecting him with snake venom. He lets the Incredibly Deadly Viper out of the cage, making the cause of death appear to be a snake bite. Sunny befriends the viper and proves to everyone by playing with it, that it did not kill Uncle Monty.
6. What is Sunny's first subtitled line in the movie?

Answer: "Someone's brain's been removed."

She says this line in the car in the beginning, on the way to Count Olaf's house, after Mr. Poe (Timothy Spall) explains how Olaf is related to the children. Sunny is subtitled because she can only speak in baby talk, and the subtitles help the audience understand what she is saying.
7. In the scene in the market, we learn about a type of vegetable that Aunt Josephine fears. What vegetable is it?

Answer: Avocado

Aunt Josephine (Meryl Streep) is afraid of avocados because she thinks the pit will become lodged in her throat, and she will choke on it. She points this out to the kids right before they run into Captain Sham.
8. Which of the following phobias does Aunt Josephine NOT mention?

Answer: A fear of being electrocuted by the phone

When the house shatters during Hurricane Herman, the other three phobias come true. The refrigerator falls and almost crushes Sunny (although Violet pulls her away in time), the stove bursts into flames before falling through the floor, and a pipe from the stove heats up the doorknob of the front door, causing it to explode and shatter.

However, Aunt Josephine does mention her phobia of being electrocuted by the phone in the book "The Wide Window", one of the books that this movie is based on.
9. How did Aunt Josephine's husband Ike die?

Answer: He was eaten by leeches

According to Aunt Josephine, Ike did not wait an hour after eating before he swam in the lake. Since the Lachrymose Leeches can smell food on a human for miles away, they attacked Ike and ate him.
10. How does Violet get out of marrying Count Olaf?

Answer: The marriage certificate is burned

Violet finds herself in this predicament when Count Olaf forces her to marry him in a play. He realizes that since he is not a blood relative of the Baudelaires, he can only get their fortune by marrying Violet. Klaus burns the certificate from Count Olaf's tower using the big glass eye, and the marriage is now invalid.
