Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A. J. Frost

Answer: Armageddon

Released in 1998 with action-movie director Michael Bay at the helm, "Armageddon" was a melodramatic blockbuster featuring an asteroid hurtling towards Earth and a crew that needed to stop it before it killed everything and everyone on the planet. Affleck played A. J. Frost, an oil driller, alongside lead actor Bruce Willis' Harry Stamper, and while both of them prepared to launch into space to blow up the asteroid, the pair tackled their personal issues (including Frost dating Stamper's daughter, played by Liv Tyler).

The movie was nominated for four Oscars, winning none; none of those nods was for acting.
2. Tony Mendez

Answer: Argo

Affleck starred as CIA Agent Tony Mendez in this film that he directed and produced, releasing it in 2012 to rave reviews and massive box office earnings. Following the true story of Mendez's plan to rescue U.S. diplomats during the Iran hostage crisis, "Argo" was named after the fake film that was set to be filmed as a cover for the operation that took place.

After appearing at the Toronto International Film Festival, "Argo" swept awards season and made Affleck one of the biggest names in Hollywood.
3. Rafe McCawley

Answer: Pearl Harbor

Another Michael Bay film, "Pearl Harbor" recounted the events that occurred in Hawaii at the start of the U.S.' involvement against the Japanese in WWII. Affleck played First Lieutenant Rafe McCawley of the USAAC alongside his best friend, First Lieutenant Danny Walker (played by Josh Hartnett). Though much of the film involved the attack and their subsequent mission to bomb Tokyo, it also featured the love triangle between both of them and Evelyn Johnson (played by Kate Beckinsale). McCawley survived the film and married her; Walker did not.
4. Matt Murdock

Answer: Daredevil

2003 was a tough year for Affleck who, in addition to starring as blind superhero Matt Murdock in Marvel's "Daredevil", made appearances as the lead in "Paycheck" and "Gigli", the latter of which bombed and contributed to two Razzie Awards for the celebrated actor.

In "Daredevil", however, he played the blinded-in-his-youth hero as he set out to rid Hell's Kitchen of crime with his unique brand of vigilante justice. Backed by Elektra (played by Jennifer Garner), he opposed Colin Farrell's Bullseye and Michael Clarke Duncan's Kingpin.

The "Daredevil" franchise was completely rebooted for TV without Affleck in the 2010s.
5. Chuckie Sullivan

Answer: Good Will Hunting

Also written by Affleck (and Matt Damon), "Good Will Hunting" hit theatres in 1997 and became a milestone for the actor and others. In addition to earning Robin Williams his best Supporting Actor Oscar, "Good Will Hunting" gave the screenwriting pair the Oscar wins as well; Affleck wouldn't receive another Oscar nod for fifteen years.

In the movie, Affleck plays the supporting role of Chuckie Sullivan, one of Will Hunting's close and well-meaning friends. The movie follows Damon's character more, tracking the opportunities he starts to find after demonstrating his great mathematical mind while working as a janitor at MIT.
6. Douglas "Doug" MacRay

Answer: The Town

Written and directed by Affleck, "The Town" (2010) put the actor on both sides of the camera as he played MacRay, a Boston bank robber leading his group of criminals to bigger and bigger scores while falling for a bank teller at one of the crime scenes. Dodging the FBI, the crimes lead to a final big heist at Fenway Park that puts him at odds with his own men.

"The Town" was critically well-received, giving Affleck further credibility on the filmmaking side as well as the performance side (after also directing "Gone Baby Gone" in 2007). He would continue to pursue directorial efforts amidst higher-profile roles going forward.
7. Ned Alleyn

Answer: Shakespeare In Love

A period film set in the days of William Shakespeare, "Shakespeare In Love" managed to strike it big during Oscar season, winning seven of thirteen Oscar nominations that year (including Best Picture and Best Actress for Gwyneth Paltrow). Affleck played Edward Alleyn, an actual figure from the Elizabethan era of theatre and acting.

In the movie, Affleck, as Alleyn, plays the role of Mercutio from "Romeo and Juliet", as the tragedy is created and performed for the first time.
8. Holden McNeil

Answer: Chasing Amy

After already having appeared in Kevin Smith's "Mallrats" in 1995, Affleck was a shoe-in for the lead role in Smith's 1997 movie "Chasing Amy", which also starred Joey Lauren Adams and Jason Lee. The movie featured Affleck as Holden McNeil, who falls in love with Adams' character, Alyssa, and starts a complicated relationship between the pair and others in their sphere. Affleck would reprise the role in "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" and the "Jay and Silent Bob Reboot" as all of them were part of the View Askewniverse.
9. Nick Dunne

Answer: Gone Girl

Releasing in 2014 and based on Gillian Flynn's best-selling novel, "Gone Girl" featured Affleck as Nick Dunne, whose wife Amy (played by Rosamund Pike) went missing only to reappear and show her true colours. Directed by David Fincher, this thriller received massive hype, especially with viewers seeing the dynamic between Affleck and Pike unfold on the big screen.

The film would make book/screenwriter Gillian Flynn into a household name and push Pike into consistent award contention.
10. Bartleby

Answer: Dogma

Ben Affleck reunited not only with Matt Damon, but director/writer Kevin Smith for this 1999 comedy about two fallen angels seeking reentry into Heaven. Playing Bartleby (to Damon's Loki), Affleck's character created an interesting dilemma wherein their readmission into Heaven would result in God (played by Alanis Morissette) being incorrect and wiping out all of existence. Only a young woman named Bethany can stop the pair, acting as the Last Scion. Naturally the film was not well-received by the Catholic Church though it was quite popular in the box office.
