Question 1 of 10
1. Betty Boop had her cartoon debut on August 8, 1930 in "Dizzy Dishes". She evolved a lot, though, over some 10 years. Mae Questel voiced her and Max Fleischer took care of the production of her animated shorts. Funny thing about Betty's ears, though. They changed real fast from her first film to later. How would you describe her initial ears? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. While speaking of ears, there was a pretty fine film released in 1950 called "Harvey". Elwood P. Dowd (played by Jimmy Stewart) had a six-foot imaginary friend - a bunny who only he could see. Elwood was a bit off the beam and had a sister in the film who thought he was just plain nuts! She wanted him committed right quick. She picked up an Oscar for her role in the film. Who was she? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. Jimmy Stewart FINALLY got be in a film, on TV, with an acclaimed actress (after some 50 years of movie history seperately). That was Bette Davis in "Right Of Way" (1983). Mr. and Mrs. Dwyer, in their golden years, decided that they wanted to do this one last thing together and their daughter, portrayed by Melinda Dillon, could make no sense of their goal. What was it? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. Melinda Dillon had a lesser (but important) role in "The Prince Of Tides" (1991) playing Savannah Wingo. In that one her character was fragile - she was the frail pivot girl in a life-changing event that pretty much changed the life of the entire Wingo family. She never really got over any of the trauma that befell them in her youth. What happened to them? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Nick Nolte, despite a few personal problems in real life, is an ace actor. He rarely misses (because he's given characters that tend to suit his personality; at least that's my opinion). In 1991 he was in a notable remake of "Cape Fear", he and his family beleauguered by an old arch-enemy played by Robert DeNiro. What was the villain's name in this mean and bloody film? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. Robert DeNiro, an actor's actor (despite his recent turn as a comedian - those "Meet The Parents" flicks are silly), got his first Oscar nomination for which one of these movies? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. In 1995 there was a film called "Casino". Not a happy one, overall, that. DeNiro had the lead but which of these ladies basically snuck off with all the attention in the movie? A rather unexpected turn of events, but she nailed it. Who was she? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. Casinos? Las Vegas? Well, only one way to go next! In "Oceans 11" and "Oceans 12" lately we had the ever-going George Clooney. The temptation for giving up was LARGE for him some 20 years ago, but he didn't. He got the going moving on TV. Which of these shows did he NOT show up in? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. In 1994 Sally Field had a good role (as the stubborn Mom) in "Forrest Gump". She, too, had some guest shots in George Clooney's 'fueler' "ER", playing a schizophrenic. Robert Zemeckis directed the movie (Michael Crichton got the TV show started) but Sally got an Emmy for her brief run on the TV series. Anyway, who was her co-star in the lesser satisfying/acclaimed "Smokey And The Bandit" in 1977? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Robert Zemeckis pulled a hat trick in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" in 1988. He directed both humans and "'toons" (cartoon characters) there. It all worked. He employed images of Betty Boop. In that interesting movie, surrounded by all the 'toons in Toontown, what set Betty Boop out among the rest? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: long and floppy

They must have thought poor Betty was a rabbit at first! The 'floppiness' soon became hooped earrings as she went - short skirts and big eyelashes soon followed. Ms. Boop (who was really a 'good' girl, despite appearances) had her share of troubles, though, in the 30s.

A singer named Helen Kane sued Fleischer because she was certain that Betty Boop was based on her; nothing much came of that. Betty was a mixture of all things in her day - a stab at image(s) of women, a glorification of pouty innocence, etc. Kids loved her as did adults.

The censors got all wound up now and again, but that was probably the point of it all, to begin with.

Answer: Josephine Hull

Ms. Hull (1886-1957) was an accomplished actress who probably never thought her recognition would land in the rather lightweight "Harvey". Her nervous turn as Veta Louise Simmons was exceptional (a nice blend of frightened and caring). Veta finally came around. Good ol' Elwood [and Harvey posed no threat, either] wasn't a madman, just an eccentric sort.

Answer: To die with each other

Their daughter, Ruda Dwyer, was not at all in their pact to drive the car into the garage and pass away in tandem. Ruda finally decided how to handle it and, in her misery, finally decided what to do and say. I won't tell you what ultimately happens but check out this forgotten project. Seeing Stewart and Davis on screen together was awesome.

Answer: a sexual assault/break-in

Savannah was a mess. So was her brother Tom (Nick Nolte), mostly, but she was the most damaged overall. When the two men broke in that innocent afternoon (at least for the Wingos it was) rapes and violence went crazy. The film, directed by and co-starring Barbra Streisand, was intense at best.

The result? A dead brother, an icy mother, a suicidal sister and Tom - who carried the horrible secrets. Pat Conroy wrote the brilliant book this movie was based on and Nick Nolte almost won an Oscar for it.

He didn't, but 'People' magazine named him "Sexiest Man Alive" anyway. To someone who played a child rape victim, no less!

Answer: Max Cady

Sam Bowden, a lawyer (played by Nick), had sent Cady "up". Upon release Max had nothing on his mind but to exact revenge. He tried to but got his in the end. Jessica Lange and Juliette Lewis (as Leigh and Danielle Bowden - Sam's wife and daughter) eventually got the picture and helped in the end. The original film was seen in 1961.
6. Robert DeNiro, an actor's actor (despite his recent turn as a comedian - those "Meet The Parents" flicks are silly), got his first Oscar nomination for which one of these movies?

Answer: The Godfather - Part Two

He was nominated and won! "Bang The Drum Slowly" never earned him a nomination while the other two mentioned did - "Raging Bull" scoring him another Oscar. Totally associated now with director Martin Scorcese, DeNiro has stretched into different areas. It seems he is free now to rest on past laurels and not worry so about making cinematic impact in a classic sense.
7. In 1995 there was a film called "Casino". Not a happy one, overall, that. DeNiro had the lead but which of these ladies basically snuck off with all the attention in the movie? A rather unexpected turn of events, but she nailed it. Who was she?

Answer: Sharon Stone

Stone was rather amazing. Miss huge IQ/Mensa member/leg crossing sex symbol to this? She was good as the complicated wife here - upon winning the Golden Globe even she had to confess that she 'didn't believe it'. A red carpet favorite being acknowledged as a great actress, too? It doesn't happen all that often.
8. Casinos? Las Vegas? Well, only one way to go next! In "Oceans 11" and "Oceans 12" lately we had the ever-going George Clooney. The temptation for giving up was LARGE for him some 20 years ago, but he didn't. He got the going moving on TV. Which of these shows did he NOT show up in?

Answer: Night Court

Clooney really had a hard way to go as he got his career in full swing. Nearly a dozen failed shows on TV (remember the one about the talking baby? Mercy, it was dreadful!) but then along came "ER"! His Dr. Doug Ross there clicked, at last, and he is now a superstar.

A 'nice' one, basically, as well. He's never forgotten his roots and, even though he is powerful, good looking and rich, doesn't come off in too superior a way these days. He's taken a seat behind the cameras now - directing and producing very original projects. Of the 4 mentioned, George never showed up on "Night Court", though. John Laroquette was steering the horse on that one.

Answer: Burt Reynolds

OK. So maybe "Smokey And The Bandit" was not all that great but Sally and Burt were dating back then so being in a film together didn't seem too bad an idea. It can be said that her choices of roles after her awesome take in "Norma Rae" in the 70s could be questionable but Burt was the #1 box office actor back then.

Not to mention that 'Cosmopolitan' magazine centerfold that he did, which still rushes a female heart here and there.

Answer: She was not shown in color!

Betty a cocktail waitress? Jeesh, I guess worse things could come to pass. Betty Boop is an icon, of sorts. She is surely in color in my memorabilia - who cares if she looks like a tramp? She wasn't one. Now we all know it.

Boop-boop-a-doop. Lawsuits and scandal aside, I hope you had a little fun with this.
