Hattie Jacques plays Sid's wife Beattie, who spends her entire day chatting at Joey. Despite her best efforts Joey refuses to learn to talk. The first time Joey chirps is when Sid is reading the runners names in a horse race. Soon Sid is fleecing his local bookie with win after win.

Sid James was born in South Africa. He trained as a barber but took up performing in the forces. He emigrated to England after World War Two. He had a long and varied career with roles ranging from violent henchman to a stalwart of the "Carry On" films. He died in 1976.

It is believed that its portrayal of the unions in such a negative light alienated the "Carry On" series usual working class audience.
