Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the beginning, or, how do you start a quiz about a comedy legend anyway? How many films were in the "Carry On" canon?

Answer: 31

Thirty one films, starting with "Carry On Sergeant" in 1958, and ending with "Carry On Columbus" in 1992.
2. Did Sid James star in more than 15 "Carry On" films?

Answer: yes

Sid's debut came in the 1959 film "Carry On Constable" and in more than 15 films he appeared in, he always got top billing!
3. Which of the following female actors NEVER appeared in a "Carry On" film?

Answer: Mollie Sugden

Perhaps best known for her portrayal of Mrs Slocombe in "Are You Being Served", Mollie never appeared in the "Carry On" canon.
4. Which "Carry On" film had the following poster tag-line? "A Great Guy with his Chopper"

Answer: Carry On Henry

The best performance in "Carry On Henry" could only belong to Sid James. He strolls with regal authority and aplomb through the legacy of a larger-than-life king without putting a foot wrong.
5. Which was the last "Carry On" film in which Charles Hawtrey appeared?

Answer: Carry On Abroad

Hawtrey's last film presents him as a drunken figure, forever staggering round with a bottle in his hand. Charles was continually drinking during the filming. Sadly, by the early 1970s, the drinking habit of this most accomplished of screen comedy actors had started to affect the smooth production timetable at Pinewood Studios.
6. Which "Carry On" film featured the following characters: "Bill Boosey", "Lady Evelyn Bagley", "Nosha Chief" and "Walter Bagley"?

Answer: Carry On Up The Jungle

A sparkling tribute to the legacy of Tarzan, this film stomps through an aimless but hilarious track in the African wilderness (with vintage wildlife footage interspersed to add reality to the leafy Pinewood set).
7. Which "Carry On" film, the first after the death of Sid James, met with a woefully poor reaction from the public, and brought the "Carry Ons" to their lowest level?

Answer: Carry On England

The sexual frustration and innocent banter had been completely abandoned and in its place was a more open-minded attitude to sex. Sadly lacking in a solid team of old favourites, the film had a script which replaced the non-stop stream of innuendo with a more smutty, arrogant form of comedy.
8. Which "Carry On" was inspired by the hugely popular James Bond series?

Answer: Carry On Spying

Writer, Talbot Rothwell, fully comfortable in his writing for the series, crafted a small but compact cast of regular team members. The last black and white entry in the film series, it is full of in-jokes for the real film buff. In a camp twist on the James Bond theme, the writer wanted to call Charles Hawtrey's character Charlie Bond - 001 and a half.

However, incensed and humourless Bond producer Harry Salzman threatened legal action and so Hawtrey became Charlie Bind - 0. 0. 0. (delivered as 'Oo - oo, Ooh!').
9. In one of the most quoted nightmarish memories of Pinewood Studios production, the mud was sprayed green to make it look like grass, and leaves shedding for the autumn were stuck back onto trees. Which "Carry On" film does this relate to?

Answer: Carry On Camping

For the immortal exercise sequence, Barbara Windsor's bra was tied to a fishing line, held on to by some old lag at Pinewood Studios and was wrenched off at the right moment, Kenneth Williams yelling "Now let's really see those chests come out!" On the first take, Barbara was pulled off her feet into the mud, and put back on her feet ready for take two. Fearful of exposing any part of her anatomy, Barbara was determined to clutch her breasts the moment the bra was flung off. Wonderful timing and a "Carry On" landmark.
10. When Sid James was unavailable for one of the "Carry On" films, the initial name cited to replace him was Woody Allen. Although Allen was not used, an equally famous American actor stepped in. Which "Carry On" film was it?

Answer: Carry On Follow That Camel

Phil Silvers was eventually chosen, although Woody Allen would have made interesting casting to say the least. Many of the "Carry On" cast felt ill at ease with the importance of Phil Silvers, particularly Kenneth Williams, who quickly became irritated with the comedian's unending stories and insistence on using idiot boards during filming.
