Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Released in 1971 'Carry On Henry' could only be about Henry VIII. Were all of Henry's real wives featured in the film?

Answer: No

In the film Henry has just married Marie of Normandy and is looking forward to his wedding night. Unfortunately Marie is always eating garlic and just will not stop. He begins to hatch a plot to dispose of her but he needs to do it in a way that won't displease her cousin, the King of France.

The film takes place between Henry's marriages of Anne of Cleves and Catherine Howard and opens with Anne's execution even though she was only, in reality, divorced. 'Carry On Henry' is said to be Barbara Windsor's favourite and Sid James wore the same cloak as Richard Burton in 'Anne of a Thousand Days'.
2. Released in 1971, the same year as 'Carry On Henry' this film features a 'budgie that can pick winning horses. Which film, the 22nd, was it?

Answer: Carry On at Your Convenience

'Carry On at Your Convenience' is set in the factory of W.C Boggs and Son, makers of sanitary ware. It pokes fun at unions and shop stewards and was shunned by the series' traditional audience, the common working man. It didn't show a profit for 5 years.

The factory designer, Charles Coote and the owner's son Lew Boggs are keen for the factory to branch out and produce bidets. The owner, W.C., is against the idea. Whilst this is going on in the boardroom the union shop steward, Vic Spanner, tries all he can to disrupt production by calling a strike for the slightest thing, especially on a Saturday when there is a football game on. Part of the film centers around the traditional works outing to the seaside.
3. The fourth 'Carry On' to feature a medical story line is 'Carry On Matron'. It is about a gang of thieves attempting to steal a consignment of pills from a maternity hospital. What type of tablets are they after?

Answer: Contraception

The gang, led by Sid James' character, attempts to infiltrate the Finisham Maternity Hospital, by getting Sid's son to impersonate a female nurse, so they can steal a new consignment of contraception pills to sell abroad for a vast profit. The problem is that he soon becomes part of the hospital routine and falls for one of the real nurses, played by Barbara Windsor.

As with most 'Carry Ons' there are sub plots, such as the relationship between Dr. Cutter, Kenneth Williams, and the Matron, played, as always, by Hattie Jacques. When the gang of thieves finally arrive at the hospital they blow the doors to the storeroom, only to wake the entire hospital which results in a 'Benny Hill' type chase around the building.
4. This 'Carry On' is set on the island resort of Elsbels and features a group of monks. Which one of the series was it?

Answer: Carry On Abroad

'Carry On Abroad' is about a bawdy pub landlord, Sid James, trying to get away on an overseas holiday with one of his customers, played by Barbara Windsor. He thinks he has managed it because his wife, Joan Sims, hates flying. When another customer lets slip the plans Sid's wife decides to accompany him on the trip.

The remainder of the film is a parody of a typical holiday in a Spanish resort in the early to mid 1970s, with bikini clad girls and unfinished hotels. A religious order visiting a shrine is included just for the 'El' of it.
5. 'Carry On Girls' was released in 1973 and is set in the seaside resort of Fircombe. Which long term cast member was dropped from the film because of a row with the producers?

Answer: Charles Hawtrey

Hawtrey was born George Frederick Joffre Hartree in Hounslow, Middlesex in 1914. His career spanned almost sixty years and covered music, radio, theatre and films. His last 'Carry On', and indeed film, role was 'Carry On Abroad'. He was dropped partly because of chronic alcoholism and partly because he wanted higher billing in the films and a Christmas TV show. He died, alone, in 1988.
He took his stage name from the actor, Sir Charles Hawtrey, who died in 1923.
6. This 'Carry On' has Sid James playing the Reverend Flasher, who leads a double life. Can you recall the name of the film?

Answer: Carry On Dick

'Carry On Dick' is the story of Big Dick Turpin aka Reverend Flasher. Turpin is causing trouble around the area of Upper and Lower Denture and Sir Roger Daley sends the Bow Street Runners to catch him and his gang. Turpin is helped by the Rectory parlour maid, Harriet, played by Barbara Windsor, and the church organ pumper Tom, played by Peter Butterworth. The gang, therefore, consists of Tom, Dick and Harry.
The Runners sent to capture them are Desmond Fancey and Jock Strapp.
'Carry On Dick' marks the final appearances of Sid James, Hattie Jacques and Barbara Windsor.
7. Which 'Carry On, released in 1975, is set on a campsite that is built on the site of a Roman villa?

Answer: Carry On Behind

'Carry On Behind' stars Elke Sommer as a Russian archeologist, joining Professor Crump on a dig to unearth Roman remains, discovered underneath a caravan park. People staying at the site include a butcher and an electrician hoping to misbehave themselves after telling their wives they are going on a fishing trip.
Other guests include a suburban couple, an overbearing mother-in-law with a foul mouthed Mynah bird and the obligatory scantily clad girls.
8. The 28th 'Carry On' made a disastrous return to an historical theme. Set in an experimental WWII artillery battery it was called 'Carry On ____'.

Answer: England

'Carry On England' was a box office failure. The traditional double entendre is replaced by what can only be described as smut. The film is about a group of male and female gunners who are intent on making love not war and the efforts of Captain S Melly to turn them into an efficient fighting unit. Very few 'Carry On' regulars appear in this film with only Kenneth Connor taking a leading part.
9. In the penultimate 'Carry On' a more sexual style was adopted. 'Carry On Emmannuelle is about the exploits of the wife of a French actor.

Answer: False

Emmannuelle Prevert is the wife of the French Ambassador to England. Following an accident her husband can no longer fulfill his marital responsibilities and so she goes on a series of 'adventures' with a succession of important people, including the Prime Minister. Her real wish however is to resurrect her husbands flagging desire.
10. Released to coincide with a 500th anniversary this final 'Carry On' came 13 years after the previous one. It was called 'Carry On ___'.

Answer: Columbus

Christopher Columbus is convinced he can find a new sea route to the Far East and persuades the King of Spain to pay for the voyage. The trip is hampered by Fatima, a spy in the pay of the Sultan of Turkey, who makes money from taxing merchants who follow the existing route through his land. 'Carry On Columbus' was not a great commercial success, although it did do better than the two 'serious' films about the same subject that were released the same year.

It features some of the most well known alternative comedians of the time and marks the return of both Jim Dale and Leslie Phillips.

It was hoped the film could revive the popularity of the series but the bad reviews ended this.
