Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which chick flick, about a sorority queen who goes to Harvard Law School to win back her ex-boyfriend, would you be watching if you heard the following quote: "And last week I saw Cameron Diaz at Fred Segal, and I talked her out of buying this truly heinous angora sweater. Whoever said orange was the new pink was seriously disturbed."?

Answer: Legally Blonde

"Legally Blonde" is the story of Elle Woods, a sorority queen played by Reese Witherspoon, whose main interests lie in fashion. When her boyfriend dumps her for a classmate of his from Harvard Law School, Elle quits her fashion merchandising program to follow her beau to Harvard. First ridiculed by the others for her seeming air-headedness and naivete, she manages to win their respect by successfully defending a tough case during her internship and the movie ends with her being elected as class speaker and graduating with top honors.

The quote in the question was said by Elle while introducing herself on the first day of class.
2. In the movie "Yes Man", what was the colorful name of the beverage that Jim Carrey's character tried for the first time when he said, "I've never had a ___________ before, but I had a ______________ last night. I really like _____________"?

Answer: Red Bull

In "Yes Man", Carrey's character is a stuck-in-the mud executive who finds himself accepting a dare to say "yes" to everything for a year, with hilarious consequences. When he has "Red Bull" for the first time, he goes totally berserk on the caffeine in the energy drink, and then crashes after uttering this quote. Funny movie!
3. What is the color mentioned in the following quote and the title of the 1985 movie starring Whoopi Goldberg? "I think it pisses God off when you walk by the color ________ in a field and don't notice it."

Answer: purple

Steven Spielberg brought Alice Walker's story about the life and trials of two black sisters growing up in rural Georgia in the 1930s to the screen in a big budget production that pleased many but couldn't capture the full breadth and wonder of Alice Walker's epistolary novel.

The quote in question is said by Shug, played by Margaret Avery, to Celie, the protagonist of the movie, played by Whoopi Goldberg, while they are talking to each other about what they have gone through in their lives.
4. What is the missing color in the following quote from "A Christmas Story"? "Scut Farkus! What a rotten name! We were trapped. There he stood, between us and the alley. Scut Farkus staring out at us with his ___________ eyes. He had __________ eyes! So, help me, God! _____________ eyes!"

Answer: Yellow

There are many colorful references in this beloved Christmas movie about a man recalling the holidays he'd had as a ten-year-old boy in the 1940s, and all of the strange and idiosyncratic things that happened to him and his family that holiday season. The quote in this question was said by Ralphie, the protagonist, when he was recalling a run in with neighborhood bully.

Perhaps the most famous colorful quote from this movie is the one about the gift that Ralphie wanted more than anything, "an Official Red Ryder Carbine-Action Two-Hundred-Shot Range Model Air Rifle!"
5. Which Steve Martin Movie would you be watching if you heard the following quote: "I was born a poor black child"?

Answer: The Jerk

In "The Jerk", Steve Martin played an inept and clutzy white boy who was adopted by an African-American family, and he never understood why he didn't quite fit in. The quote is one of the first lines in the movie. The other colorful movie title answers were also Martin movies, except for "The Purple Rose of Cairo", a Woody Allen movie starring Jeff Daniels and Mia Farrow.
6. Which of the following Jim Carrey movies would you be watching if you heard the following quote: "Can't make the scene if you don't have the green"? (Hint: The color in the quote also relates strongly to the alter-ego of character played by Carrey and others in the movie).

Answer: The Mask

The quote is indeed from "The Mask", the story of mild-mannered Stanley Ipkiss who transforms into a suave devil-may-care Casanova when he dons a bright green mask that fuses to his skin. The line in question is said by Carrey's character when he robs a bank to get money to finance his expensive night life! Carrey also plays greenish characters in two of the movies mentioned in the incorrect possibilities: "The Grinch", in which he plays the title role, and "Batman Forever", in which he plays the Riddler. Only in "The Mask" do other characters also don the mask and turn green, however, so it is the one that best fits the description. Plus, the quote is from "The Mask"!
7. Which popular sci-fi movie began with the protagonist being offered a choice through the following quote: "You take the blue pill -- the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill -- you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes"?

Answer: The Matrix

"The Matrix" was the first in a trilogy that went on to include "The Matrix Reloaded" and "The Matrix Revolutions". The film is set in a future where the perceived reality is actually a simulated world created by machines who try to control the humans.

At the beginning of the film, a computer programmer with the alias Neo, played by Keanu Reeves, tries to decipher the meaning behind references to "The Matrix" that have started to appear on his computer. His attempts lead him to Morpheus, played by Laurence Fishburne, a man who offers him a choice between finding out the truth in the dangerous world of the Matrix or continuing with his current sham of a life.
8. Which 1973 horror/suspense film is set in the year 2022, in a world where there isn't enough food to support the people on the planet? The film starred Charlton Heston and Edward G. Robinson and featured a supposedly plankton-based miracle nutritional supplement in answer to the food shortage. The supplement was really made of something quite different, something much more nefarious, as shown in the following colorful quote: "_______________ ______________ is people!"

Answer: Soylent Green

The line was said by a horrified Charlton Heston, as the New York Police Detective who realized that the drug was not made of plankton at all, but was made from dead humans. Though the special effects in the movie can't hold a shine to those possible in today's movies, the sinister score and the acting by a solid cast of classic-era actors makes it a good one to check out.
9. Which colorful movie title is the one that the following hue-embued quote comes from: "Pepperland is a tickle of joy on the blue belly of the universe. It must be scratched"?

Answer: Yellow Submarine

The quote does indeed come from the Beatles' crazy animated romp, "Yellow Submarine", in which John, Paul, George and Ringo agree to go to Pepperland in a Yellow Submarine to help the citizens fight off an attack on their lifestyle and homeland by the Blue Meanies.

The leader of the Meanies is the one who says the quote from this question, showing his intolerance of anything joyful and fun. Of course the Fab Four have to come to the rescue. The other movies mentioned are colorful, but have nothing to do with the Beatles or the quote.
10. What 1941 remake of an earlier version of a Dashiell Hammett novel contains the following colorful quote: "Mr. Spade, have you any conception of how much money can be got for that black bird?"

Answer: The Maltese Falcon

All of the films mentioned are Humphrey Bogart films, but only "The Maltese Falcon" is the one in which Bogart plays Sam Spade, private detective, trying to find the elusive sculpture that is the black bird of the title of the film. Spade's partner had been murdered early in the movie, and it is somehow related to the quest for the valuable item.

The plot takes many twists and turns, with people betraying each other right and left. This quote comes from a scene where Kaspar Gutman, played by Sydney Greenstreet, is trying to enlist Spade's assistance in locating the bird.

This is one black-and-white classic that is well worth a view!
