Jeff Kinney both wrote and illustrated "Diary of a Wimpy Kid". The novel was released on the website FunBrain in 2004 before it was released in a hardcover format in 2007. Over the next 14 years, Kinney would release another 15 books in the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series and sell more than 250 million copies. For the 2021 film release of "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" Jeff Kinney was actively involved as both screenwriter and producer.

At the start of the film Greg Heffley informs the audience that he is writing in a journal, not a diary, and that he is documenting his thoughts because when he is famous people will want to know how he was as a kid. Greg is all concerned about fitting in at his new school, Westmore Middle School.

While Greg's best friend Rowley wants to keep doing elementary school stuff Greg tells him that they need to grow up.

Greg tells Rowley that it is strange that he is so obsessed with the European pop star Joshie and that his fans are likely all 6-8 year old girls. Unashamed, Rowley affirms his admiration for Joshie as well as other items in his room like stuffed animals and little kid toys.

The film slows down as Rowley is asking the question "After school do you want to come over and play?" and the lunchroom is at first shocked and silent before all of the other kids erupt in laughter. Once they make it out of the lunchroom Greg tells Rowley that they have to be cool now and that they 'hang out' rather than 'play' together.

For their Halloween costumes Greg dresses as a ninja, Rowley dresses as a knight with a unicorn floatie and glow stick lights and Greg's younger brother Manny dresses as a pirate. Before they leave, Greg's mom tells them not to take a shortcut through Snake Road and to be home by 8:30. Of course Greg doesn't listen to these instructions and the three end up being ambushed by teenagers while they are walking down Snake Road.

Greg and Rowley have made a game called 'tumble trike' in which one of them throws a football and the other goes on the trike down the hill trying to catch the football. Unfortunately, after Greg throws the football the front wheel of the trike hits the football causing Rowley to fly high in the air before landing and breaking his arm. Greg lies about what caused Rowley's arm to break but his mom finds out and tells him that Rowley is a good kid and that he needs to make it right by him.

When Rowley breaks his arm he becomes more popular as other kids want to sign his cast and they feel bad for him. This annoys Greg and after Rowley tries to team up as cartoonists he tells him he would rather work alone. Initially, Greg is chosen as the school cartoonist but his work is heavily censored so he resigns.

This prompts Rowley to be the cartoonist and his works are friendly and prominently feature the phrase "Zoo-Wee Mama". Although Greg came up with the term "Zoo-Wee Mama", he doesn't understand why all of the other kids find it so funny.

While at Fregley's house Greg is extremely uncomfortable due to all of the weird stuff there and Fregley's clingy and strange behavior. After Fregley takes and eats Greg's chocolate bar he acts bonkers. Eventually, Greg locks himself in the bathroom so that Fregley won't put boogers on him.

Seeking revenge for what happened Halloween night, the teenagers who got stuck in a ditch, go to Greg and Rowley's school and confront them on the basketball court. They forcibly make Rowley take a bite out of the stinky cheese and almost make Greg do the same before a teacher comes out and makes the bullies leave. Once the kids notice that the cheese has a piece missing they assume that Rowley took a bite and that he has 'cheese touch'. Remembering his mom's words to make it up to Rowley, Greg tells everyone that he took a bite out of the cheese because the teenagers dared him to do so.

After the school thinks that Greg has 'cheese touch' everyone except for Rowley avoids him which Greg actually ends up liking.
