Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The very first starship USS Enterprise (XCV 330) appears only in pictures and models. Launched in the 2130s, what was this starship's primary goal?

Answer: Exploration and colonization

The USS Enterprise (XCV 330) is an early starship in the "Star Trek" universe that represents humanity's early exploration of space. It existed prior to the events depicted in the "Star Trek" television series and movies and, indeed, the United Federation of Planets. It was a long-range exploration vessel designed for deep space exploration and was among the first starships to be capable of achieving warp speed. It had a capacity of 100 crew and 850 passengers to reach other worlds and colonize them.

In appearance, it was composed of a double ringed body with a central command spire and fusion engine drive.
2. The Enterprise NX-01 was featured in "Star Trek: Enterprise". It was the first ship to be outfitted with a warp 5 engine. Who was the captain of this ship?

Answer: Jonathan Archer

The Enterprise NX-01 was the first ship to use the warp 5 engine and was able to establish Earth as a power to be reckoned with in the interstellar community. The Vulcans had achieved warp 1 in the middle of Earth's 20th century and had improved the capabilities of their drive, but were faced with a warp-two barrier. This made flights through space quite long and tedious.

A lab in Montana finally broke the barrier and the Enterprise NX-01 was constructed in 2151. Though called a 'warp 5 engine', the Enterprise NX-01 was only rated at a maximum warp speed of warp 4.5. It was also the first ship to be equipped with a transporter, though not without its initial bugs.
3. The USS Enterprise NCC-1701 was the first Federation ship to bear the name. First launched in 2245, probably in the Spring, who was its first captain?

Answer: Robert April

The USS Enterprise NCC-1701 is probably the most important ship to bear the name. It was a Constitution-class starship launched on April 11, 2245, from the San Francisco Fleet Yards. It was the primary setting for the original "Star Trek" series.

Robert April oversaw the building of the ship and became the first captain. His wife, Sarah April, incidentally, became the ship's first chief medical officer. The first officer aboard the ship was Christopher Pike who would later become the ship's captain when April would step down in 2250.

The ship featured in "Star Trek" the original series, as well as on "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds".
4. The USS Enterprise NCC-1701-A was the replacement for the original Federation ship after its destruction. In which of the "Star Trek" movies did the Enterprise-A originally launch?

Answer: The Voyage Home

After the original Enterprise is destroyed in the movie "Star Trek: The Search for Spock", the crew of the ship use their commandeered Klingon vessel to go back in time and rescue some humpback whales. Upon their return to the 23rd century and saving the Earth by releasing the humpbacks back into the ocean, the crew of the Enterprise are court-martialed for their actions. Due to the mitigating circumstances, all charges are dropped except for one against Kirk. For this, Kirk is dropped down to the rank of captain and the crew is able to unite as the crew of another ship. They go to their new assignment in spacedock and find that they get a new ship, the Constitution II-class ship also called Enterprise, but this one with the designation NCC-1701-A.

All this happens in the movie "Star Trek: The Voyage Home".
5. The USS Enterprise NCC-1701-B was launched in 2293 under Captain John Harriman. Originally intended to be a journey to Pluto and back, what out-worldly force did the Enterprise-B encounter on its maiden voyage?

Answer: Nexus

The USS Enterprise NCC-1701-B was launched after the Enterprise-A was decommissioned. Christened with a 2265 bottle of Dom Pérignon, the maiden voyage of the ship was supposed to be a publicity trip to Pluto and back. However, two ships sent a distress call to which the Enterprise-B answered.

They encountered an energy ribbon known as the Nexus which ripped through the ship and took Captain James T. Kirk, a passenger on the ship, along with it. This was the beginning of the plot for the movie "Star Trek Generations".
6. The USS Enterprise NCC-1701-C was the next successor to the proud name of Starfleet ships. Destroyed in the Battle of Narendra III, it appeared in canonical media for the first time in which "Star Trek" series?

Answer: Star Trek: The Next Generation

The Ambassador-class starship USS Enterprise NCC-1701-C was captained by Rachel Garrett when it was destroyed by the Romulans at the Battle of Narendra III. The ship was defending a Klingon outpost, an act seen by the Klingons as very brave and very in line with their Viking-like philosophy - that dying in battle was the ultimate death for a warrior.

In the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Yesterday's Enterprise" (Season 3, Episode 15), the Enterprise-C actually created a temporal rift during the battle and drifted through it, badly damaged. This creates an alternate reality where the Federation is now at war with the Klingons because the Enterprise-C disappearing was seen as a sign of cowardice. The crew of the Enterprise-D send back the Enterprise-C, now repaired, to the battle and their certain death, in order to save their present and restore the timeline.

While the Enterprise-C does not have the same extensive exploration or characterization as some other iterations of the Enterprise, its impact and sacrifice remain significant in the "Star Trek" lore, highlighting the themes of duty, honor, and the consequences of altering history.
7. The USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D featured in the longest running series out of all of the "Star Trek" television shows as well as in four of the "Star Trek" movies. Who was the first and longest-serving captain of the Enterprise-D?

Answer: Picard

The USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D was a Galaxy-class starship whose main purpose was exploration, research, and diplomacy. It was launched in 2363 on stardate 40759.5 and its first captain was Jean-Luc Picard. He was tasked with an ongoing (eight-year) mission to explore strange new worlds and all that...

The Enterprise-D was the main setting for the television show "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and, with its crew, it featured in one feature film - "Star Trek Generations" (1994). It also had an important role to play in the final season of "Star Trek: Picard" when it was stolen by its former crew from the fleet museum.
8. The USS Enterprise NCC-1701-E was the next in the long lineage of starships Enterprise and had many of the crew of the Enterprise-D. Which of these bridge members did not transfer to the Enterprise-E with the rest?

Answer: Worf

The Enterprise-E was launched from the San Francisco Fleet Yards in orbit around Earth, on stardate 49027.5. It was built as a Sovereign-class starship and was given the name of Enterprise following the destruction of the Enterprise-D at the Battle of Veridian III. Most of the crew transferred to the Enterprise-E with the exception of Worf, who went to the Deep Space 9 space station. Incidentally, Worf would come back at some point in the future to captain the Enterprise-E and was also involved in the reason it was no longer around (presumably destroyed, since it could not be placed in the Fleet Museum).

The Enterprise-E featured in three movies - "Star Trek: First Contact" (1996), "Star Trek: Insurrection" (1998), and "Star Trek: Nemesis" (2002).
9. The USS Enterprise NCC-1701-G was a ship rechristened. It was given the name following the return of the Enterprise-D and its valiant actions on Frontier Day. What was the original name of this ship?

Answer: USS Titan-A

In "Star Trek: Picard", in the battle against the Borg and Changeling conspiracy, the Enterprise-D had a pivotal role to play in winning the day and saving Earth. The crew had all been gathered before on the USS Titan-A, a ship captained by Liam Shaw, and some had made it onto the Enterprise-D. Shaw gave his life so that the crew could escape, and Seven of Nine, the first officer, stayed behind with Raffi Musiker to try and retake control of the ship from the now-assimilated crew.

After the battle and the Titan-A was repaired, the crew were all pardoned of their crimes. The Titan-A was rechristened as the USS Enterprise-G and Seven of Nine was given her first command. She was joined by Raffi as her first officer and Jack Crusher as a special counselor to the captain.
10. The Enterprise NCC-1701-J was seen on "Star Trek: Enterprise" and participated in the Battle of Procyon V in the 26th century. Which species did they defeat leading to an end to the Temporal Cold War?

Answer: Sphere-Builders

The Sphere-Builders were a trans-dimensional species that saw that the United Federation of Planets would be their eventual downfall. So, in order to prevent their own destruction, they set about trying to alter incidents in the past so that the Federation would never come into existence in the first place. This was one of the plots on "Star Trek: Enterprise".

On the show, the Xindi are one of the main antagonists, subverted by the Sphere-Builders to try and destroy the precursor to the Federation. However, a temporal agent named Daniels takes Captain Jonathan Archer to the 26th century onto the bridge of the Enterprise-J. There, they witness the Battle of Procyon V and Daniels enlightens Archer to the fact that, in the future, the Xindi now serve in Starfleet.
