Before F. Scott Fitzgerald could complete the novel on which this movie was based, he died of a heart attack. He based his novel on the life of Irving Thalberg, the late head of production at MGM. The uncompleted novel was nevertheless published in 1941.

"Once Upon a Time in America", directed by Sergio Leone, tells the story of boyhood friends in the Jewish ghetto in New York and follows their lives into the world of organized crime and the Mafia, and how one of them reflects back on his life 30 years later.

The character Jimmy Conway, played by Treat Williams, has the same name as a character played by Robert De Niro in the film "Goodfellas" which also featured Joe Pesci.

He is seeking a fallen star to bring back to the girl he thinks he is in love with. However when he finds the star, it is a living maiden, Yvaine. In trying to save her life they have a lot of adventures, assisted by Pirate Captain Shakespeare in his flying pirate ship.

The ensemble cast also includes Michelle Pfeiffer, Sienna Miller, Mark Strong, Rupert Everett, Ricky Gervais, David Walliams, Peter O'Toole and Henry Cavill. The film is narrated by Ian McKellen.

The role of Yvaine was originally offered to Anne Hathaway, Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Alba and Sara Michelle Gellar, who all turned it down.

The film had an estimated budget of $70 million and grossed an estimated $135 million worldwide.
