Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Screen adaptation of Truman Capote's novel of the same name in which a befuddled robbery turns into the senseless murder of an innocent family (1967); in this first feature film for the Coen brothers, a P.I.'s plot to kill the husband who has hired him instead of the wife he has been hired to kill goes awry when the husband he has left for dead isn't (1984).

Answer: In Cold Blood Simple

The tragic story told in "In Cold Blood" is unfortunately a true one based on Capote's interviews with the real killers of the Clutter family. A young Robert Blake portrayed one of the criminals, and ironically, years later, the actor was accused of and acquitted for the murder of his wife. Richard Brooks was nominated for Oscars for Best Direction and Best Adapted Screenplay for "In Cold Blood". Frances McDormand's first feature film was "Blood Simple", years before starring in "Fargo" (another Coen brothers collaboration) in 1996, which won her the Best Actress Oscar. Joel Coen won the Grand Jury Prize for Drama and the Independent Spirit Award for Best Director, and M. Emmet Walsh won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead. McDormand and Joel Coen married shortly after the release of "Blood Simple".
2. A poor girl (Molly Ringwald) falls for a wealthy "in-crowd" guy (Andrew McCarthy), instead of her best friend who adores her, in this brat pack romantic comedy (1986); drag queen Divine stars as the ultimate white trash mother who is trying to retain the title of "Filthiest Person Alive" in this outrageous John Waters debut that breaks just about every taboo imaginable (1972).

Answer: Pretty in Pink Flamingos

Molly Ringwald started out on the TV show "The Facts of Life" before starring in three movies written by John Hughes - "Sixteen Candles" (1984), "Breakfast Club" (1985) and "Pretty in Pink". John Waters and Divine were childhood friends, and after "Pink Flamingoes", Waters cast Divine in "Female Trouble" (1974) and "Polyester" (1981) before he had commercial success with "Hairspray" in 1988.

As well as Divine, "Hairspray" featured Sonny Bono, Deborah Harry and Jerry Stiller and helped make Ricki Lake a household name. "Hairspray" was adapted into a Broadway musical in 2002.
3. Anthony Hopkins stars as an honor-bound head butler in a wealthy British household, whose detached reserve causes him to deny his feelings in trying situations and even to deny himself of love (1993); alien Klaatu visits our planet in an attempt to warn all human beings that they must stop their violent ways (1951).

Answer: Remains of the Day the Earth Stood Still

"The Remains of the Day" was nominated for eight Oscars, including Hopkins for Best Actor, Emma Thompson for Best Actress, and James Ivory for Best Director. Robert Wise's sci-fi classic "The Day the Earth Stood Still" was the basis for many sci-fi films to come and has the ability to spark a heated discussion even today, as evidenced by posters on imdb message boards debating its timeless themes.
4. A wacky romance between a sexy, offbeat woman and a straight-laced businessman suddenly turns very dark when the woman's violent ex-husband is released from jail (1986); Denise Richards and Neve Campbell are teenage girls who accuse their good-looking school counselor (Matt Dillon) of rape, but a police detective (Kevin Bacon), suspecting a conspiracy is just the beginning of a long series of plot twists (1998).

Answer: Something Wild Things

After directing the acclaimed "Melvin and Howard" (1980), but before the Oscar blitz for his "Silence of the Lambs" (1991) and further acclaim for "Philadelphia" (1993), Jonathan Demme made "Something Wild". The unexpected and complete change of tone was brilliant, as inexperienced Jeff Daniels went from rollicking with a fun and fresh Griffiths to battling a frightening Ray Liotta. "Wild Things" also featured Theresa Russell aptly cast as Denise Richards' mother and Bill Murray as Matt Dillon's lawyer.
5. Ron Livingston plays an unhappy Initech employee, who conspires with two recently laid-off friends to siphon company money into their personal bank account (1999); Clint Eastwood directs himself as an engineer who missed his chance to go into space back in 1958 and is now being called upon to do just that in an effort to stop a satellite predicted to crash into Earth (2000).

Answer: Office Space Cowboys

Gary Cole is almost as evil as the annoying boss in "Office Space", as he was playing the satanic sheriff on "American Gothic". Mike Judge, creator of "Beavis and Butthead" and co-creator of "King of the Hill", made this must-see for anyone who has ever worked in an office. Eastwood created a cute flick as his character brings into space with him his old buddies, played by James Garner, Donald Sutherland and Tommy Lee Jones.
6. Yul Brenner, Charles Bronson, Steve McQueen, James Coburn and three others portray U.S. gunmen hired to protect a small Mexican town from bandits (1960); in the original film, upon which the first film in this clue is based, Toshiro Mifune stars as one of the swordsmen hired to protect a Japanese village (1954).

Answer: Magnificent Seven Samurai

"The Magnificent Seven" is just one example of many American or European directors who have based their works on the Japanese films of Akira Kirosawa. George Lucas has acknowledged that Kirosawa's 1958 "The Hidden Fortress" was his primary inspiration for the first "Star Wars" film. "Entertainment Weekly" named "The Seven Samurai" as number twelve in its list of greatest films of all time, the only foreign-speaking film in its top twenty.
7. Michael Douglas plays a college professor dealing with the crush of a young co-ed boarding in his house, the pregnancy of the college's chancellor with whom he was having an affair, and major writer's block (2000); Brandon Teena is new to a small Nebraska town and begins dating a popular young woman, but tensions erupt into tragedy when his new friends discover that Brandon is actually a woman, portrayed by Hillary Swank in her first Oscar-winning role (1999).

Answer: Wonder Boys Don't Cry

Based on the Michael Chabon novel, in addition to Michael Douglas, "Wonder Boys" also featured Katie Holmes, Frances McDormand, Tobey Maguire and Robert Downey Jr. Bob Dylan won an Oscar for its song "Things Have Changed". "Boys Don't Cry" is based on actual events. Years after her Best Actress Oscar for "Boys Don't Cry", Hillary Swank won the same award for Clint Eastwood's "Million Dollar Baby" (2004).
8. Melanie Griffiths plays a Staten Island secretary determined to succeed in the Manhattan business world, and she even impersonates an executive after she finds out her boss has stolen her idea (1988); Winona Ryder plays a young woman, placed in a mental hospital after a suspected suicide attempt, who befriends other young women who clearly belong there more than she, particularly the often charismatic sociopath (portrayed by Angelina Jolie) who continually attempts escape (1999).

Answer: Working Girl Interrupted

Mike Nichols directed Harrison Ford opposite Melanie Griffiths in the delightful and often very funny romantic comedy "Working Girl". Joan Cusak played the best friend while Sigourney Weaver played the despicable boss. Carly Simon's song "Let the River Run", which accompanies some gorgeous footage of pre-9-11 Manhattan in the credits, won the Oscar for Best Song, and Griffiths, Cusack and Weaver were all nominted for acting Oscars. "Girl Interrupted" is based on the true account of writer Susanna Kaysen, and Jolie won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar.
9. Based on the popular 1960's sci-fi TV series, the Robinson family must work with the evil Dr. Smith to survive after they are marooned in a unknown part of the galaxy (1998); Sci-fi spoof has Lone Starr battling Dark Helmet, who wants to steal fresh air from Planet Druidia (1987).

Answer: Lost in Spaceballs

William Hurt, Mimi Rogers and Gary Oldman star in the "Lost in Space" movie. Stars of the TV series, such as June Lockhart and Mark Goddard, have cameo appearances in the movie version, while the same actor, Dick Tufeld, voiced the robot in both the TV series and the movie. Mel Brooks directed, co-wrote and acted in "Spaceballs", which starred Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga and Rick Moranis.

At one point, the king in "Spaceballs" says Princess Vespa was last seen passing Jupiter 2, the name of the ship in "Lost in Space".
10. Elizabeth Taylor plays a young woman and Spencer Tracy her dad who must deal with his mixed emotions and the details, both financial and otherwise, of her upcoming nuptials in this delightful comedy (1950); in this classic horror sequel, the monster from the first film demands his creator make a spouse for him (1935).

Answer: Father of the Bride of Frankenstein

Vincente Minnelli directed the original "Father of the Bride", which was popularly remade with Steve Martin and Diane Keaton in 1991; James Whale directed Boris Karloff as the monster and Elsa Lanchester as his bride in "The Bride of Frankenstein", one of the most famous and influential horror movies of all time.
