Cary Grant told the director that he liked working with Irene Dunne because she was inventive and delightful. Grant and Dunne also worked together in "Penny Serenade" and "The Awful Truth".

Ellen was going on a scientific expedition when she was shipwrecked. At one point, Ellen said she was at Latitude 12, Longitude 128, which is near the Philippines, but in another scene they said she was near Indochina. She explained that she was rescued by a Portuguese freighter.

Answer: Bianca

Bianca was played by Gail Patrick. Once again she played the second female lead, who tangles with the leading lady over a man. Throughout most of the film, she was baffled by Nick's behavior. She screamed at him, threatened to leave (after speaking with her mother), and eventually called in a psychiatrist because she thought Nick had gone mad. When she found out the truth about Ellen, Bianca slugged Nick in the nose and walked out.


In most of her films she played a haughty socialite who knew what she wanted and went after it, as she did in "My Man Godfrey".

Answer: Steven J. Burkett

When Nick first saw him, Steven was surrounded by beautiful women at a swimming pool. He removed his robe, proceeded to the high dive board and did a spectacular dive. When Nick saw this he became very jealous and worried over what might have happened on the island.
Steven was played by Randolph Scott. Although he later became famous for playing cowboy roles, in this film he was more like a vegetarian Tarzan.
Scott and Grant lived together in the 1930's in what came to be known as Bachelor Hall. Because of their friendship and the amount of women who went in and out of the beach house the rumor mills were kept busy for years.

A not-so-subtle reference to them being on the island alone (quite risque for the time). Needless to say Nick was none to pleased to hear that she had not been alone on the island, in fact he went to great lengths to find Steven and see what he was like for himself.

Answer: Shoe salesman

He was a meek and mild man, the total opposite of Steven. When Ellen first asked for his help, he misunderstood and thought she was asking him for a date.

Chester Clute played the salesman. Chester was in close to 250 movies between 1930 and 1953 - most of his work was uncredited.

Answer: Cracked jokes

Ellen cracked jokes twice during the hearing and the judge fined her twenty-five dollars each time. She left the room for a minute, and when she came back Bianca was slapping money on the bench saying it was worth it. When Nick turned around, we saw that she had slugged him in the nose.

The children asked her if she was a lady sailor, and Tim said that their mom was practically a sailor, but that she went down on a shipwreck. Chinch then stated that her brother was always boasting.

The children were played by Scotty Beckett, who appeared in 15 "Our Gang" shorts, and Mary Lou Harrington, whose only other role was in "It Comes Up Love".

Answer: Dressed up as Santa Claus

Ellen told him he could go on a long cruise and make up his mind when he got back, which would be just in time for Christmas. Nick went up to the attic, found the Santa suit and came back down. Ellen welcomed him with open arms.

Answer: Garson Kanin

Garson Kanin also directed "Tom Dick and Harry" and "Night Shift". He had a much more distinguished career as a writer, writing such classics as "Pat and Mike" and "Adam's Rib".

Originally the movie was to be directed by Leo McCary, but days before shooting was to begin, he was hurt in an automobile accident.

David Hand directed "Bambi", Ben Sharpsteen directed "Pinocchio", and Joe Grant directed "Fantasia". These were the highest grossing films of the 1940's.
