Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The captain of the USS EXCELSIOR is surprised to learn that his ship's much-vaunted "trans-warp drive" system doesn't work, thanks to some sabotage. Just as the system fails, a brief message appears on one of the monitors on the bridge. What is the message?

Answer: Good Morning Captain

Scotty (James Doohan) used his assignment as the EXCELSIOR's Captain of Engineering to sabotage the whole trans-warp system, making it impossible for Captain Styles to pursue Kirk and his crew.
2. Kruge (Christopher Lloyd) orders his gunner to target a specific area of the Federation starship orbiting the Genesis Planet. Which area?

Answer: the engine

The gunner destroys the USS GRISSOM with a single shot, instead! Kruge kills his gunner where he sits for this mistake.
3. Dr. David Marcus (Merritt Butrick) admits to Lt. Saavik (Robin Curtis) that Genesis is a failure because of a certain component he used in its make-up. What's the problematic component?

Answer: proto-matter

Apparently, protomatter is a highly unstable substance. The Genesis Planet winds up blowing itself to smithereens just hours after David's admission.
4. Kruge, to prove to Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) that he is an enemy to be taken seriously, orders one of his men to kill one of the prisoners the Klingons are holding on the surface of the Genesis Planet. "Kill one of them," Kruge says. "It doesn't matter which." The Klingon warrior is then shown walking behind the prisoners, deciding which person to kill with his knife. Whom does the Klingon select to be his victim?

Answer: Saavik

David sees, out of the corner of his eye, that the Klingon is about to stab Saavik. He tackles the warrior, and there is a very brief struggle...which ends with David being fatally stabbed.

(Esteban wasn't on the planet. He was, in fact, already dead, along with the rest of the GRISSOM crew.)
5. For the first time ever on the big screen, we hear the self-destruct sequence activated on a Federation starship. The operating procedure demands voice commands from several high-ranking officers. In which order do the officers speak the codes that activate the sequence?

Answer: Kirk, Scotty, Chekov

Sulu was off getting the transporter ready to beam everyone to the surface.
6. Kirk, as commanding officer, is required to give a final confirmation command after all officers have given their self-destruct codes. The final command is "_______, _______, ________, destruct....________." What number does Kirk say aloud in each of the blanks above?

Answer: 0

Kirk's final command is "Zero, zero, zero, destruct...zero."
7. Kirk attempts to taunt Kruge by making light of the fact that almost all of Kruge's crew was killed when Kirk destroyed the ENTERPRISE. Finish his line: "Sorry about your men, but as we say on Earth..."

Answer: "...c'est la vie."

Pretty cold...but then, Kirk had just been forced to listen to the death of his son at the hands of the Klingons, so his insensitivity may be warranted.
8. Kirk and Kruge engage in hand-to-hand combat as the Genesis Planet falls apart around them. What is the last word that Kruge hears, as Kirk kicks him in the face, off of a precipice, and into a lava stream to his death far below?

Answer: you

In a classic "watch Shatner overact" moment, Kirk times his repeated kicks to Kruge's face with overly stressed words: "*I* [kick] have *had* [kick] enough of *you* [kick]!"
9. After Kirk kills Kruge, he and Spock beam up to the Klingon bird-of-prey. How many Klingons are left aboard the ship at this point?

Answer: one

Only Maltz (played by "Night Court" star John Laroquette, by the way!) is still alive. Kirk promises to kill him later, but we never see him again after he's thrown in the brig.

Whatever happened to that character, anyway? There's no mention of him in the next movie!
10. Once Spock and McCoy have finally been brought to Vulcan, Sarek (Mark Lenard) formally asks the High Priestess to perform an ancient rite. What is it called?

Answer: fal-tor-pan

Pon farr is the Vulcan "mating fever" that hits adult males every seven years. Kolinahr is the ceremony obliterating all emotion that Spock came very close to completing in the first "Trek" film. Sha Ka Ree is the name of the Vulcan paradise sought out by Spock's half-brother Sybok in the abysmal "Star Trek V."
11. What is the more "common" name for the ritual that Sarek is requesting?

Answer: the re-fusion

Sarek: "I ask for fal-tor-pan...the re-fusion."
12. What is the name of the High Priestess of Vulcan?

Answer: T'Lar

T'Pau was the High Priestess in the TV episode "Amok Time." In that same episode we met T'Pring, Spock's betrothed who wound up with another man entirely. I made up "T'Ling".

T'Lar is played by Dame Judith Anderson.
13. In Vulcan culture, it is apparently customary for men to identify themselves not only by name, but as the sons of their fathers. Sarek, for example, refers to himself as "son of Skon." When McCoy introduces himself to the High Priestess, he follows suit. What's the first name of McCoy's father?

Answer: David

"McCoy, Leonard H. Son of David."
14. After Spock is restored, Sarek pulls Kirk aside and wonders if this human friend of his son's hasn't sacrificed too much. "Your ship," Sarek says, "your son." Finish Kirk's repsonse: "If I hadn't tried, the cost would have been ____________________."

Answer: my soul

Interestingly, in later films Kirk doesn't seem to feel especially guilty about his own part in David's death -- instead, he transforms all of those feelings into a general hatred of the Klingon race.
15. Just before the end credits roll, a title card appears. What does it say?

Answer: "...And The Adventure Continues..."

And continue it would, to the tune of seven more movies, hundreds of hours of television, and tens of thousands of pages of fiction.

Live long and prosper!
