Virgil sneaks up on Louise in order to snatch her purse but she looks up just in time. They strike up a conversation. Louise says that she is a laundress and wants to know what Virgil does. Virgil says that he plays the cello. Louise then asks him if he is with the Philharmonic. Virgil replies, "Yes, I am actually."

Virgil hands his note to the teller, but the teller can't read his note. The notes says, "Please put $50,000 into this bag and 'abt' natural. I'm pointing a 'gub' at you." The entire bank staff gets involved in trying to decipher the note, some agreeing and some disagreeing with the spelling of the note. Finally, Virgil calls Louise and tells her that he can't make their date tonight as he will be away for about ten years.

After Virgil's escape from prison, he marries Louise in a modest ceremony. Virgil describes it as a "deeply moving blood test".

The days of planning are over and Virgil arrives at the bank. Just as he begins to announce that this is a stickup, a rival gang declares it first. Virgil, then takes a vote on which gang should be allowed to conduct the robbery. The rival gang unanimously wins the vote.

The discipline is harsh and the men are not even allowed to faint without written permission. Even so, Virgil complains and is sent to the sweatbox with an insurance salesman, who represents the Ajax and Widget Insurance Company.

Much to Virgil's chagrin, he does not make the FBI's top ten list. He does win "gangster of the year," and is invited to make speeches and give talks. Finally, Virgil is captured and is sentenced to 800 years in prison, although, with good behavior he may reduce his sentence in half.
