Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The movie opens with The Kid listening to a story his grandfather reads aloud. In the book, who reads the story that is eventually published as an "abridgement?"

Answer: His father

In the movie, The Kid (played by Fred Savage) listens to his grandfather (Peter Falk) read "The Princess Bride" while sick in bed. In the book, we find out that "the kid" is actually William Goldman as a child. His "Florinese" father reads him the story--twice--when he is recovering from a bout of pneumonia, and Goldman claims to never have read it himself because he prefers to remember it in his father's voice.
2. T or F: William Goldman is the author of the "abridged" version of "The Princess Bride."

Answer: True

William Goldman claims to have updated Florinese author S. Morgenstern's original "Classic Tale of True Love and Adventure"--leaving only the "good parts," of course. The truth is, however, there is no S. Morgenstern...and there is no unabridged version.
3. In the movie, Count Rugen presides over the torture victims in the Pit of Despair. But in the book, what is the name of the place where Westley is tortured?

Answer: Zoo of Death

There are several levels of dangerous hunting in the Zoo of Death, set up by Prince Humperdinck, but Westley is tortured and killed on a level reserved for the most dangerous animal.
4. In the movie, is Buttercup actually a princess?

Answer: No

We never actually see Buttercup become a princess in the movie, not even when she marries Humperdinck (Westley says later that the marriage never happened). In the book, however, Humperdinck makes Buttercup a princess and she goes through Princess Training in preparation for their upcoming marriage.
5. For whose death does Inigo seek revenge?

Answer: Domingo Montoya

His father was killed by the six-fingered man, after he refused to hand over the sword that had taken him a year to make.
6. In the book, who was a professional wrestler during adolescence?

Answer: Fezzik

His parents traveled with him all over the world...wrestling several people at once so as not to be unfair.
7. Of the following, who is a witch?

Answer: None of these

In the movie, Valerie explains that she is "not a witch"--she's Miracle Max's wife. In the book, we learn further that every Miracle Man should have a witch, and even though Valerie is not one, Max claims that she is to save face.
8. In the book, how much time does Westley have from being given the miracle pill to when he will lose strength again?

Answer: 30 to 45 minutes

Miracle Max realizes after Inigo and Fezzik leave with Westley that although he had told them that Westley would have strength for an hour, it would really only be forty-five minutes.
9. Who uses rhymes as a mnemonic device?

Answer: Fezzik

He makes up rhymes in his head all the time without thinking, but he also tries to remember things he's supposed to do by making up rhymes. He usually fails.
10. In the book, who says the following quote: "Life is pain. Anyone who says otherwise is selling something?"

Answer: Fezzik's Mother

Westley says this to Buttercup in the movie, but in the book, Fezzik's mother says it to Fezzik.
11. Does The Man in Black hit Buttercup in the movie?

Answer: No

He raises his hand to her, but does not hit her. In the book, however, he does. The book tends to be darker and more cynical than the movie (Buttercup is both less intelligent and much shallower in the book; Buttercup and Westley's romance is much less perfect, etc.).
12. In the book, when Buttercup dives into the water to escape from her captors, what or who comes after her?

Answer: Sharks

Yes, we all know that it's Eels in the movie. In the book, though, it's just run-of-the-mill sharks...but Vizzini drives them into a frenzy by spilling his own blood overboard.
13. What is the name of Buttercup's baby?

Answer: Waverly

In the "sequel," Buttercup endures an agonizing childbirth to produce Waverly.
14. Was "The Princess Bride" nominated for any Academy Awards?

Answer: Yes

"The Princess Bride" grossed $30.8 million, and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Song.
15. With whom is William Goldman fighting over the right to abridge "Buttercup's Baby," the "sequel" to "The Princess Bride?"

Answer: Stephen King

Of course, this is yet another road Goldman leads us down in the book that is just not true (he does not have a son, either!)--Stephen King is not planning to write an abridgment of a nonexistent sequel!
